Is there a program out there, that could convert mp3 files, into Mus?

Reason why i want to know that, is so that i can then use MUS2Midi to change the mus2midi, n then use this site that Capt Toenail pointed out to me..

http://www.hamienet.com/midi2mp3

That will convert the midi2mp3, thus saving some space, witch i think is possible. Thanks.

Devil, have you got the MUS2MIDI thing working, because I don't

BTW converting the MIDI to MP3 won't save space but might make them sound better

Converting a MIDI (or something similar, such as MUS) to MP3 is relatively easy, as all the program needs to do is record the music being played by the MIDI program. The opposite is not true, because an MP3 is just a mess of sounds and the MIDI format needs to write the musical notation for each instrument separately.

So let me get this straight. You want to convert a MP3 to MUS, then MUS to MIDI, then MIDI back to MP3 again, with aim being to reduce to size of the original MP3?

Well, with that extra space on his hard-drive, he'll have the room necessary to install that program that turns a picture of the front of your house into a picture of the back of your house.

Hate to hijack this topic, but since my question is relatively in this same ballpark, I would like to know, in addition to MP3, how to put .mod's, .xm's, .it's, .s3m's and .ogg's into wad files. I assume this would have to be done by converting it to a MUS (which is how my question relates). I've seen it all done before.

If you're using a sourceport that supports those formats (I know ZDoom and Eternity support ogg and some tracker formats, ZDoom and I think Doomsday Engine support mp3, etc.), just import the file to your wad as a lump and set it as music using MAPINFO or that port's equivalent to it. No conversion necessary; MUS is just a stripped-down version of MIDI that was used in the Doom iwads to decrease filesize.

Well, let me just say, the only reason why i asked that, was Capt. Toenail said...

I have a cunning plan, convert your Doom MUS files from episode 2/3 to MIDI format using MUS2MIDI, then run them through this website to get MP3 files that sound a little better, which you can then convert to OGG to save some space

Really, what i was after, was to make a wad with custom doom 2 music, n maybe custom episode 2 & 3 of Ultimate doom. I already made one for Episode one. So that's basically why i was asking.

That's probably the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Lower the bitrate and make it variable. It's the easiest way you can make an MP3 smaller. Or not use MP3.

Converting an MP3 to Mus, then to Midi, and back to MP3 is not going to do a damn thing except give you a headache. The size of an MP3 is only determined by it's length and bitrate(s).

MP3 is audio. Midi and Mus are sheet notes. They do not fit into the equation at all.

I'd modify Captain Toenail's cunning plan and use Timidity to convert Midi to Ogg - skipping the MP3 step. That way there'll be less audio degredation.

This is really just a technical question, but how do converters turn mp3s into midis? Is there a mechanism in the software that recognizes certain sound patterns which it relates to certain midi tracks, or does it use some other system?

In fact, does such software exist at all? I swear I've seen it before but I have never had a practical purpose for it.

Some tools claim to be able to do such conversions. None of those I ever tested weren't even close to keep that promise.

No, there's been a bit of confusion, I wanted to convert the MUS to MIDI, then to MP3.

The MP3 files sound slightly better than the MIDI versions, but it turns out it's not worth converting them all to MP3 anyway because there isn't a significant difference so I'm not going to bother.

Thanks for the help anyway guys
