I usually play doom on my PC with keyboard and mouse. But sometimes I just feel like lying on my bed and relaxing while playing it or siting on my couch. You can't play on your PC while doing this. And I hate using my laptop to play doom (touchpad sucks).
What do you guys do to solve this problem? Have you got a console port of doom or do you have other alternatives?

Can't you attach a mouse to your laptop?

I can't imagine playing Doom on anything other than a properly configured PC with a proper playing space and maximum controller efficiency. This rules out awkward key combinations, uncomfortable keyboards, lack of a mouse, use of gamepads/joysticks, and lack of a steady surface.

Handicapping myself with such substandard controls or playing conditions certainly wouldn't make me feel relaxed: I'd just vent in frustration and throw the POS away.

USB Mouse, mousepad sized piece of wood/cardboard/hard cover book, mousepad itself, and of course the laptop charger. I do it all the time since I've only got a laptop anyways :P

I would say finding a portable mouse and just using that to play on your laptop. However, you could try getting used to the touchpad too. That's how I always played until the last 3 or so months when I finally found my mouse. I never had any problems with it.

Yeah, but my thumb always touches the touchpad while playing. It gets really annoying after a while.

Try a ZDaemon server then ;-)

I don't play much online, but if I were to, I would most definitely use a mouse. I don't think that would be too relaxing though ;-)

Can't you either: get a hard surface (i.e. clipboard with mousepad) or turn off touchpad?

lol I played ZDaemon for a while with the TrackPoint on my ThinkPad and did okay.

I don't see why multiplayer gaming can't be relaxing. I play CoD multiplayer to relax. ZDaemon co-op can be relaxing.

Competitive multiplayer can be relaxing as long as you're not super stressed about winning. And after a while you get accustomed to the game and end up winning even when you're just phoning it in.

I sometimes play Doom on a laptop sitting on a couch, using a wireless mouse on the armrest and it works fine unless the level happens to be hard as balls. I have deathmatched a few times while lying in bed, and I don't see myself doing it again.

I only have a laptop, and for me, playing Doom in itself is relaxing. What better way to unwind from a work day than blasting some imps and drinking a good brew?

I always play relaxed on the couch, with a PS3 dualshock controller connected to my laptop. It works great with ZDoom.

That could be true, but I don't play multiplayer enough to know that I guess. I don't think dying all the time would be very relaxing for me (and I'm quite sure I would die pretty often).

Use a joypad. Use Xpadder to map your joypad. Solved.

Not to mention the heat of the laptop on my belly and chest lowering my blood pressure and making me feel sick.

And I don't play Doom when I'm lazy in principle, I don't want to fall the slippery slope of laziness.

Some kind of special low and wide desk or table that can be positioned left to right over the middle of a bed would probably be good for playing games in bed via laptop.

Buy an USB numpad as well. Use 8456 for movements and you can keep 791230./*-+ and enter for various other functions.

+1 for relaxing on a ZDaemon server, using a touchpad, lying in bed with a laptop that needed to rest on a slab of wood from a shelf to prevent it burning the house down. I often used to play some private alien vendetta survival like this with one or two buddies till like 4am during my sleepless college years. 50% Chat, 50% Play. Too relaxed to give much of a damn about not being able to fly around and 360/no-scope cacos etc at usual PC-playing style.

But yeah, even public CTF is too difficult without a mouse. :-)

I was already set on the keyboard (and no mouse), but I remember thinking when PSX Doom came out that the controls were perfect. Shoulder buttons strafe, other shoulder buttons cycle weapons.

That was until I discovered Turok and then all the FPS's since that showed me how to actually use a mouse. But for laying back and playing, I really think the PSX controller (or similar) is pretty damn good.
