Maybe there needs to be some kind of Doom Purity Test, so important questions like this can be answered. :-)

Well a Purist is basically a person who prefers or thinks Vanilla Doom shouldn't be changed or 'fine the way it is' basically. For example, they're against adding new monsters, weapons, etc into Doom.

What we need is a web-based questionnaire that spits out a chart once completed - basically the Doom community's answer to the Political Compass.

I like this idea as well. Here's a possible chart that could be used:

I'd say myk: AFAIK he's the only one using a Windows 98 rig to run vanilla Doom as him main method of playing, not just as an oddity/weekend project. Not pure DOS, but quite close.

Also, he has some very interesting ideas....well, read this thread, my childe, and draw thy conclusions.

I probably wouldn't be a purist since I work on my own extended source port.

I got a 98 system that can run Vanilla, well two 98 systems that run vanilla with working netplay! However I never use it.

AFAIK Hitherto does this too and he even uses dual-boot DOS sometimes.

That's one based purely on mapping. It forgets entirely about the player's side of the equation. Software vs. OpenGL/DirectX? 320x200 vs. high resolution? Horizontal lock vs. freelook? Standard movement vs. also jumping and crouching?

Also, what is "traditional map design"? Random mishmash à la crappy '94 wad? TWID?

Well I also don't want to vote myself... but I love doom2.exe
and I prefer it to all sourceport s
(well I have no DOS machine, I play it with dosbox or MS-DOS in virtual box)
imo a pwad (can also be dihf) can be good if it is far away from being doom (for example worst's Snake-within-doom )
thats why I map doom2-format only (it took me >6 hours to make avj.wad map32 playable in vanilla without any errors)

as I said, I don't want to vote me...
what I want to say is, don't be ashamed loving doom2.exe and doom2.wad , they are awesome!

I use source ports because 1) they're easier to deal with and 2) the network play is much better.

I use higher resolution but I could live without it.

I don't like new weapons or monsters.

I haven't seen any graphics updates I would ever use.

I prefer the original IWADs to any PWAD.

But none of it has anything to do with "purity." I just play what I'm interested in.

I don't think we should start thinking that "Purist" is a dirty word. I shake my head when people imply that being an "Impurist" (Is that a real word?) is a bad thing but thinking that being a "Purist" is shameful makes me shake my head just as much.

Me. Sure I use ZDoom or Skulltag, but I prefer not to jump even if it's enabled. Super hardcore.

Right...

That ZDoom project is dead. I released episode 1 a while ago but I won't be making any more. No one will mind.

The misnomer was because I didn't really understand source ports when I joined the forums so I stuck to playing and making vanilla only. Eventually, I was enticed by screenshots of ZDoom and I started using source ports.

I've gone almost full circle now. The novelty of ZDoom has largely worn off and I usually use PRBoom+ now. Other than Progressive Fiction my mapping this year has all been vanilla and next year I'm hoping to start a new vanilla project.

I don't consider myself a purist anymore but it's too late to change my username. My advice to any unregistered lurkers reading this is to NOT use an adjective as a username!

With vanilla on the far left and ZDoom on the far right I would place myself left of centre but not to the extremity. I'm mostly interested in vanilla levels and level making now but I actually play in PRBoom+ I also would make exceptions for limit removing WADs that catch my interest but ZDoom only mods would have to be something really special.

I've been known to be using nothing but pure Doom on a DOS machine in 1994. I was so hardcore that I used Doom v1.1 (and installed it from floppies) until I got Ultimate Doom in 1996. I'm so hardcore I still have those floppies.

I was so hardcore that I printed the Official Doom FAQ v6.666 on my dot-matrix printer, and had an ASCII-art Doom & Doom II logo hanged on my closet's door. Beat that.
