ohiwastedmylife Posted November 10, 2012 Found this in a box recently. It is an old MS DOS copy of DOOM in its original paper sleeve. I looked all over Ebay, Google, and anywhere else I could to find the exact DOOM cd I have, but I could NOT find it anywhere. The DOOM disk says SHAREWARE, and is in a paper sleeve with "3201US0003030" & "01/01 ADCA" on the back. The artwork looks awesome, it has a demon looking back at you giving you the okay to continue decimating beasts. I have not seen another one anywhere. Any thoughts on the rarity? THANKS! CD has 2 dates, 1992 & 1995 & it was made by GT Interactive. I found buried in the disc a file saying that it is DOOM V1.8 http://i48.tinypic.com/105s5sh.jpg http://i49.tinypic.com/fm00w3.jpg http://i45.tinypic.com/23m0sb4.jpg http://i46.tinypic.com/30rva4x.jpg EDIT: Also found an old game manual to go with it. Mystery Man in 3D Posted November 10, 2012 Sorry Charlie Nash. I have that same exact disc. Got it at a local garage sale for just $2. I've used it. It's actually v1.2 of DOOM, NOT v1.9. Even though it's not really rare, the v1.2 might give it a little bit of value... 0 Share this post Link to post
ohiwastedmylife Posted November 10, 2012 That must be a different version than mine, I would love to see your CD. I literally did not find a single one anywhere online and I am curious about it. Mine says 1.8 inside on multiple files not 1.2. 0 Share this post Link to post
fraggle Posted November 10, 2012 Looks like it's probably Just Another Shareware disk. Is there any sign it's actually made by GT? The book isn't a manual - it's the official strategy guide (I have a copy as well). Does it have the floppy disk in the back? 0 Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted November 11, 2012 Nice find, though apart from the version number it's probably not all that rare. fraggle said:Is there any sign it's actually made by GT? Yep, 16 East 40th Street is GT Interactive's former New York address. A clearer photo would have helped. AFAIK Sybex published two versions of the survival guide, mine is the disk-less one. I was offered the other but its disks had gone walkabout. (560x675 - 639k) 0 Share this post Link to post
ohiwastedmylife Posted November 11, 2012 I didn't realize I shot the other photos with a potato! Here are some better ones I guess. http://i48.tinypic.com/105s5sh.jpg http://i49.tinypic.com/fm00w3.jpg 0 Share this post Link to post
Xaser Posted November 11, 2012 I had one of those too at some point. Long gone now, I suppose. 0 Share this post Link to post
hex11 Posted November 11, 2012 Any cool tips? Does it say how to get past the dark room at the end of E1M5? ;-/ 0 Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted November 11, 2012 There's an "ideal route" diagram for each map and a couple of tips for the dark room, though I don't know if I can tell you without breaching their copyright. ;-) 0 Share this post Link to post

miko508 Posted November 11, 2012 I, too, have similar questions about which versions of Doom are on the various major shareware releases. I wish there were a comprehensive list available somewhere. I started a similar thread a while back: http://www.doomworld.com/vb/doom-general/62023-doom-shareware-boxes/ My thread sort of trailed off when I asked for info on which version of Doom is on the disks that I own. This is certainly a tough subject! Good luck in your quest! 0 Share this post Link to post
ohiwastedmylife Posted November 11, 2012 In a few of the files in mentions that the game is V1.8. The game is such a mess of different dates and information so I am sticking with the latest date/number I can find. 0 Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted November 12, 2012 Could you post a directory listing? n0w.co said:My thread sort of trailed off when I asked for info on which version of Doom is on the disks that I own. This is certainly a tough subject! Would be easier to tell if the boxes weren't shrinkwrapped. AFAIK, the smaller mail-order box was used for registered Doom up until v1.666. 0 Share this post Link to post
miko508 Posted November 12, 2012 GreyGhost - You have been a big help so far! Thank you for your many contributions to my threads. I've moved your reply to my thread... I didn't mean to imply that no one helped - there were a number of great contributions to the question! My comment was meant to highlight how difficult of a topic this is. 0 Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted November 13, 2012 Don't mind me, I'm just bemoaning the fact you can only tell so much about the content of a shrinkwrapped box by looking at the outside. ;-) Back on topic - found a half-forgotten shareware pack with a familiar looking CD while sorting out boxed games for photographing. Here's a quick (and overly bright) shot. (1100x700 - 255k) It's version 1.8 of Shareware Doom with the following contents - Volume in drive D is DOOM18_SW Volume Serial Number is E200-6022 Directory of D:\ 06/01/1995 10:01 PM 17,303 DEICE.EXE 06/01/1995 10:02 PM 1,439,232 DOOM_V18.1 06/01/1995 10:03 PM 904,448 DOOM_V18.2 06/01/1995 10:01 PM 247 DOOM_V18.DAT 06/01/1995 10:04 PM 184 INSTALL.BAT 16/01/1995 07:29 PM 1,129 README.BAT 16/01/1995 07:40 PM 4,096 VTOC.SYS 7 File(s) 2,366,639 bytes 0 Dir(s) 0 bytes free Don't know about the sleeve code on ohiwastedmylife's copy, can only assume it's from a different shareware bundle. Mystery part-solved? 0 Share this post Link to post
ohiwastedmylife Posted November 14, 2012 WOW, THAT IS IT! I have that Wolfenstein CD as well, Good find! That is the first time seeing the same exact CD's that I have, just different sleeves. I no longer have the Wolfenstein sleeve but the DOOM one may have been accidentally placed in it? 0 Share this post Link to post
miko508 Posted November 14, 2012 GreyGhost - Nice detective work! You are certainly very knowledgeable in this subject. 0 Share this post Link to post
