The dreaded "S" word!

Recommended Posts

I'm talking 'bout sex, of course. Not that I want to know about your habits in this regard, and you needn't know mine, either. Why, though? I'm not sure. Religion, politics, race, art, philosophy, violence, music, film, death, life, technology, fashion, sports ... Everything's gravy until sex comes up. There seems to be no other subject considered so inappropriate for casual discussion. And it should stay that way. Why? I don't know. It makes us feel awkward in most cases. How did humans become so uncomfortable with one of the most natural processes is a mystery, and yet I agree that it should generally be discouraged as a conversational topic.

Sex is a pretty broad topic. You could ask people to regale you with any number of things that pertain to sex, whether it be what age they think it mature enough to start having sex, whether they think monogamy is reasonable, what age they lost their virginity(and whether they regret not waiting longer), what sexual positions have they tried, how often they look at porn, what are their masturbation habits, what are their thoughts on casual sex, do they think sex should be something to reserve until well into a relationship (or marriage), or do they think it's okay to dive in right away... there's dozens of topics pertaining to sex that could fill pages and pages of threads. Granted, a lot of the topics I listed would probably spawn much more conversation on a different forum, but I digress.

So if you want to discuss something like sex, you should probably be a lot more specific than 'let's talk about sex'. You might as well say 'let's talk about video games. What do you think about video games?'

I'm guessing it looks like a poisonous mushroom as well.

I guess it's destined for post hell. Perhaps an indication on how squeamish the subject is. Or the stupidity of my choice of subject.

The subject is a reasonable one. The way you introduced it was lamentable.

Reminds me of that famous piece of graffiti artwork "MY PENIS SMELS OF APPLES".

Only one of these topics is guaranteed not to descend into a vitriolic argument, with people on both sides of the debate becoming over-passionate about their opinions. Guess which.

Sex is (pardon the pun) fucking awesome. I think it's downright sinful that people are so squeamish about the topic. Why should we be ashamed to talk about it? Making it off-limits just makes things worse.

It's really not nearly as discouraged as you think it is. My fiance and I talk about it rather openly with our friends at times. I don't bring it up too often because it's kinda difficult to describe as being either good or bad unless there's some really funny story tied into it. And the details don't really apply to everyone since every pair of people is a little different in what gets them off.

I, however don't have any interest in it in movies or video games. It's almost repulsive to me.

Yup. It all depends on the crowd and their level of maturity. For instance, I once walked in on my girlfriend and my mother casually conversing about sex. At first I thought it was awkward, but then I realized, why the fuck shouldn't they be talking about it? It's not like we're teen-agers, or it's some kind of secret.

I gave them their privacy, of course. But that has to do more with two women bonding than my discomfort with the subject.

@ Goatlord: After a while, the subject becomes more academic and less ribald.

Mine is made of truth. Bitches can't handle it.

Case in point.

Hey, I can talk seriously about sex as much as I can humorously.

I would just prefer not to indulge my experiences/desires with people I've never met in person before. Perhaps the anonymity of the internet is the true block on this subject?

It could be. On one hand, the anonymity provided by the internet should help break down taboos like this one, but on the other hand, it doesn't lend itself very well to serious discussion. It's far easier to titter over tatas and move on. Like, how is babby formed? Hehe.

Although, really, unless we're talking about something interesting specifically, there's not much to be said about sex itself. It's just what it is.
