Cacowards 2013 nomination thread

Zone 300 no way!

It may not have been perfect, but it was easily the most fun I've had (Doom-wise) in a long time!

If I could only vote for a single wad, it would be BTSX, no contest. Absolutely blew me away.

And I'd happy seeing any of these other guys win, too:
Unholy Realms
D2TWID
Stardate 20X6
PirateDoom

OK, December is approaching, so it's a good time to give my opinion:

Doom 2 The Way ID Did
Zone 300
ConC.E.R.N.Ed
Hellbound

Also, and I know this is unlikely, in case they are finished by then, I also propose:

TNT 2: Devilution
Doom 2 In Name Only

Slaughterfest 2012
Stardate 20X6
Swim With The Whales
Pirate Doom
Soulcrusher
Hellbound (pretty boring gameplay-wise to be honest, but leveldesign redeems it all)

I guess that's all that impressed me in one way or another, but I should also add ConC.E.R.Ned and Unholy Realms to the list since they're worth mentioning anyway, even if they aren't exactly what I like sometimes. Zone 300 was fun enough. As for single levels - Forsaken Overlook was really neat, even though the beginning with its prolonged punching and shotgunning drags a bit.

Ribbiks for mapper of the year. I don't think this statement should be elaborated.

I want to add my nomination for Hellbound too. Oh man what a fucking awesome wad

Fractal Doom for mod of the year, if mockaward doesnt exist.

It brought me back to doing doom and doom2 again. Its fun, it makes the game a bit of a challenge again. Its everything a cacoward should be.

Hellbound - really superb wad, I love how it starts out as well.
Doom II The Way ID Did - pure greatness

All I have for nominations, let's hope both of these golden wads make it in.

Well here's my tentative guessing, based on what I've seen:

Hellbound
Concerned
D2TWID
One of Ribbicks' wads
Unholy Realms
Foresaken Overlook
Pirate Doom (if not fully completed is eligible)
BTSXE1 (same as above)

There's eight guesses. Really no educated guess on the other two though a Chris Hansen map and either Interception or Hadephobia seem plausible possibilities.

I don't think I'll play anything else new from this year but I've actually played some stuff this year thanks in part to the DWMWC's bi-monthly modern megawad. Anyway, of what I've played the 3 that have impressed me most are:

D2TWiD

Excellent mimicry of original Doom II-ness, which, as a bonus, actually felt like a cool original style since PWAD's rarely follow Doom II's style cues.

Back to Saturn X

I just about got over the silly names and steep inclination in weapon and monster progression to really marvel and the wonders still possible to wring out of the original .exe. For me this exceeds even Suspended in Dusk for Vanilla technical feats.

Stardate 20X6

Feels like a game of it's own. A Japanese megadrive game converted from an arcade display deemed too sadistic for public consumption perhaps. I couldn't finish this in any difficulty but I saw enough to appreciate the cool style and meta-gamey micro slaughter battles set up for you. A mapper hitting his strides here for sure.

What is not complete about Pirate Doom? It doesn't have 32 levels, but not everything has to. I guess it still gets updates now and then but I'd still consider it 'complete'.

Wow I'm late to the party!
I didn't get much time to play many good Wads, but out of the ones I did, my nominations go to Temple of the Lizardmen 3 and Damnation.

I've already put down BTSX episode 1 and Pirate Doom as definite nominations. I'd also add D2TWID to the list. It far exceeded my expectations and I really enjoyed it.

I nominate Xaser for mapper of the year. He has contributed to many community map projects including HYMN, Doom 2 In Name Only, and Doom 2 The Way Id Did.

And ZDCMP2 which may or may not be released this December.

(This "may or may not" is not some rhetorical hyping device, I honestly have no idea.)

Plutonium Winds actually was finished. It's just not on /idgames because of the read-only thing.

900 deep in the dead: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=17287

This wad is a lot of fun. It is the most fun I have had in a doom wad in a long time. The use of 100 linedef limit is extremely impressive. Especially E1M7. That level is huge for 100 linedefs. I highly recommend this wad. It definitely deserves a mention in the next cacowards!

Recently Darkreaver said something about maybe taking some of his leftover maps and using them for Plutonium Winds, but I've sent a message to him saying he should post here to clarify.

Plus BTSX episode 1 is more or less finished, episodes 2 and 3 will be separate megawads.

I've always thought there was some unwritten rule that if a wad isn't uploaded to idgames it doesn't count as "finished"... this could all be in my head though.
