Can you point us to the exact source?

These look like they might be from the ever-popular q3sky.zip, skyboxes from the quake 3 community. A lot of these are already-seen work (used in several doomsday mods as early as 2005 among others, Doom Remake comes to mind). The readme of that might be a good place to look for the original author. But I'll leave that to the many people who nowadays believe it's more important to know who made a certain graphic rather than looking at the graphic itself.

ugh, why the hell are they packed in a wad in a pk3?

Ooh it's like a matryoshka doll of weird archiving!

A lot of pk3's do that, especially on zandronum. That is because they are different files merged into one. Why else?
