Deepsea Drawing Mode Question

Recommended Posts

How come when I draw sectors counterclockwise in Deepsea, I always get the Sector drawn incorrectly (or words to that effect) message? Why do you have to draw sectors clockwise?

Um, you are supposed to get an error when you draw sectors counterclockwise. It is correct to draw them clockwise (Did you get them mixed up or something?) Uh... heres why:

Now I will explain why you had to connect the Verteces in CLOCKWISE order. When the Linedef appears you will notice that a Linedef looks kind of like this:

Linedef:

|
First Sidedef | Second Sidedef
--|
|
|

The important thing is the little thing that sticks out from the side. Remember: Like an ordinary wall, every LINEDEF ('wall') has two SIDEDEFS ('sides'). The Sidedef that has the little stick is the FIRST Sidedef, or Sidedef #1. The one that doesn't is #2. This is important because if both Sidedefs have different textures, you want to know which one is which. When you click Verteces in CLOCKWISE order before connecting them, all the little sticks will point INWARD, and this is considered a sector. If, instead, you made the sector counterclockwise, it would mean that the enclosed are would be a void space, and it would look like a technical column.

cool...

EDIT: er.. the little diagram is messed up, use the link to see the picture...

That's not always true. One may or may not get an error drawing counterclockwise.

IOW, it's ok to draw clockwise or counter-clockwise in DeePsea - the relevant issue is what it is one is trying to draw and what the surrounding context looks like. Whether it's an "error" or not depends on what one was trying to make and the surrounding area of the drawing.

The DeePsea help file explains the difference.

In short, drawing a sector clockwise results in all the first sidedefs pointing inwards; that is, the side you will see while within a sector.
Obstacles, if drawn as opposed to inserted, should be drawn counter-clockwise, as we should see the outer wall (again, the first linedef).
