No more PWADS or DOOM projects?!

Recommended Posts

Have you guys heard of TCPA? Trusted Computing Platfrom Alliance
Basically, they wanna control everything on your pc. 3rd party software and files will not be allowed. Linux and other open-source OS's will die. No more mp3's. There is not even files. It's all object orriented. There is even a bill congress is trying to pass. Saying that it is illegal to use a PC that is not TCPA based. It is unbeliavable. The next MicroSoft OS, LongHorn, will fully take advantage of TCPA. I hope this shit never happens. It is a violation of our constitutional rights. It will take away your rights, and freedom of speach. The internet will basically die as we know it because running 3rd party software will not be allowed. It is alot more worse than I can explain here. Basically:
-You will not be able to share files of any kind(NO PWADS :(
-It will be against the law to use any pc other than a TCPA compliant machine if the bill is past.
-Open Source OS's like Linux will die. As it will take alot of money to be TCPA certified

This all fucken sucks and will change the way we know and use computers. I hope it doesn not happen. Here are the links:

http://www.trustedcomputing.org/tcpaasp4/index.asp
http://www.againsttcpa.com/what-is-tcpa.html

Maybe I am overreacting about all this, but maybe I am not. It is disturbing to think about though :-/

keenspace has fucked up (again), so i dont knoe if this even links to the correct comic, but:

http://felneycomic.keenspace.com/d/20021227.html

Someone should write a new 1984, based on the possible future from todays system, people will willingly have telescreens (except they'll be called 'flat screen two way automatic home entertainment centres') in thier houses 'for child protection', because when the police are constantly watching every room in your house a pedophile will never snatch your children!, and if you try and use the internet you wont be able to talk to anyone on IM systems unless they are the same age as you, anyone a year or more younger is a possible 'rape victim', and anyone a year or more older than you is a possible rapist out to get you, remember its all for your own protection!, and also if you use any files on your computer which dont come directly from microsoft (monoply? whats that?) or the government you'll be automatically reported to your local police force (the police have been privatised now, and make up thier own rules regarding what is 'acceptable punishment' to give to criminals, so the outlook isnt good if they take you to the station and string you up on the electrified tower...), oh and no straight people can live with gay people, because gay people are all perverts and straight people are all gaybashers, so the gays are sent to 'special camps' in the countryside for thier own protection, they must have good heating cause theres a big chimney in the camp and they always seem to be burning something, even though tehers never any deliveries of coal to the camps...

The site says:
Does TPM [note: Trusted Platform Mode] control a user's system?

No. The TPM can store measurements of components of a user's system, but the TPM is a passive device and "doesn't decide" what software can or can't run on a user's system. The TPM provides the storage and reporting of the measurement of components of the user's system that are reported to it. The TPM accepts any measurement that is reported. There is no capability for the TPM to determine whether a particular measurement is acceptable or not.

he also said:

The site says:

Does TCPA certify applications and OS' that utilize TPMs?

No. The TCPA has no plans to create a "certifying authority" to certify OS' or applications as "trusted". The trust model the TCPA promotes for the PC is 1) the owner runs whatever OS or application they want; 2) the two parties engaged in the transaction determine if the other platform is trusted for the intended trasnaction.

It also says

What are the licensing and/or royalty arrangements for the technologies outlined by the TCPA specification?

The TCPA spec is currently set up as a "just-publish" IP model.

The site says:

Does the TCPA support open source systems?

Yes. The ability to use the TPM functionality is available to all developers of software. An open source project could determine to use TPM functionality today. The concepts of measurement, protected storage and attestation of measurements are fundamental concepts that hold true for any type of OS or application. The platforms that support TCPA today are not limited to only one OS and if open source developers provided applications that used the TPM functionality they would find support.

This is super old news. It's really not that big of a deal either. the only real threat is Palladium.

keep believing that nightmare. any hardware that is not tcpa compliant will not work on a tcpa computer. then theres the fritz chip...

I can find 0 evidence that you will HAVE to use only TCPA compliant hardware and software. Everything on the TCPA site itself seems to indicate the exact opposite. And you cannot deny the fact that linux developers could implement the specifications right this minute if they wanted to.

There is a downside too. There will be remote censorship: the mechanisms designed to delete pirated music under remote control may be used to delete documents that a court (or a software company) has decided are offensive - this could be anything from pornography to writings that criticise political leaders. Software companies can also make it harder for you to switch to their competitors' products; for example, Word could encrypt all your documents using keys that only Microsoft products have access to; this would mean that you could only read them using Microsoft products, not with any competing word processor.
=====================================================================
With existing MP3s, you may be all right for some time. Microsoft says that Palladium won't make anything suddenly stop working. But a recent software update for Windows Media Player has caused controversy by insisting that users agree to future anti-piracy measures, which may include measures that delete pirated content found on your computer. Also, some programs that give people more control over their PCs, such as VMware and Total Recorder, are unlikely to work under TCPA. So you may have to use a different player - and if your player will play pirate MP3s, then it seems unlikely to be authorised to play the new, protected, titles.
=====================================================================
When you boot up your PC, Fritz takes charge. He checks that the boot ROM is as expected, executes it, measures the state of the machine; then checks the first part of the operating system, loads and executes it, checks the state of the machine; and so on. The trust boundary, of hardware and software considered to be known and verified, is steadily expanded. A table is maintained of the hardware (audio card, video card etc) and the software (O/S, drivers, etc); Fritz checks that the hardware components are on the TCPA approved list, that the software components have been signed, and that none of them has a serial number that has been revoked. If there are significant changes to the PC's configuration, the machine must go online to be re-certified. The result is a PC booted into a known state with an approved combination of hardware and software (whose licences have not expired). Control is then handed over to enforcement software in the operating system - this will be Palladium if your operating system is Windows.
=====================================================================
Sure - unless your system administrator configures your machine in such a way that TCPA is mandatory, you can always turn it off. You can then run your PC with administrator privileges, and use insecure applications.

There is one respect, though, in which you can't turn Fritz off. You can't make him ignore pirated software. Even if he's been informed that the PC is booting in untrusted mode, he still checks that the operating system isn't on the serial number revocation list. This has implications for national sovereignty. If Saddam is stupid enough to upgrade his PCs to use TCPA, then the American government will be able to hot-list his Windows licences, and thus shut down his PCs, next time there's a war. Booting in untrusted mode won't help. He'd have to dig out old copies of Windows 2000, change to GNU/linux, or find a way to isolate the Fritz chips from his motherboards without breaking them.

Well it's just a thought. I am not having a computer with a "cop" in it telling me what I can do and what I can run. I will stick with Windows XP.....

From the TCPA-FAQ on the Against-TCPA website, you mean.

Did anyone notice that almost nobody (who matters) is actually forced to use the next-generation operating system or fancy hardware? Get real. Even if passed, these "laws" are unenforcable.

Sidenote: I think Striker is badly in need of a new title or some other sillification.

I think it does. Those Anti-TCPA guys give me the impression they don't know WTF they're talking about half the time.

On a side-note, you can't really complain when you're stopped from doing something that's illegal anyway :)

On another side-note, nothing like this will never become law in Britain, because it would be in conflict with our Data Protection Act.

We are aware. Like they say, it's old news, has already been debunked, and is unenforcable.

The end.
