Background 3

It took several thousand people to run the waste treatment plant on Mars. Each person needed a place to live, food to eat, clothes to wear, and points of the workers would be able to do after hours to entertain themselves all needed to be addressed. In the end colonies were built, just as had been initially planned. But a new problem arose. Now that Mars was drawing people in, it could no longer be depended on as nothing more than a radioactive treatment site. The plant could not be closed, but the increasing income from travel to and from Mars could not be ignored either. However, if the plant could be relocated, both problems could be solved.
Mars had two moons, Phobos and Deimos (fear and terror). Neither was suitable for sustaining any form of life, but UAC wasn't interested in life, it just wanted a new site for their treatment facilities. In the end it was decided that smaller facilities would be built, one on each moon. Extraction of key elements would take place on Phobos. All materials deemed 'safe' were sent back to Mars to be formed into a more 'usable' state. All 'unsafe' materials and the leeched waste material were sent to Deimos for processing, and in the case of the leftover waste, disposal. Terraformation began only three months before the facilities began construction. As a result, all personnel would live at the same facility in which they worked. The moons were still barren, and even when terraformation was complete, UAC had no interest in setting up any sort of colony site.
Work on Phobos began in 2117. Work on Deimos followed in 2119.
In 2123 UAC left the Earth completely and took root on Mars.
In 2128 automated terraformation robots were sent to Jupiter's moon, Ganymede, in order to tame the planet enough for human crews to set down and assist in the process.
In 2130 the military became a constant investor in UAC.
In 2145 UAC and the military came to an "understanding". For years the military had been UAC's biggest supplier. It now wanted to cash in on this "investment". UAC agreed to allow the military to use any non-essential parts of the radioactive treatment facilities, and even to build additions to the facilities if such was needed, but only on the moons Phobos and Deimos. UAC and its employees would keep quiet about this and in return the money would keep coming in. In addition, anything created or discovered by the military would result in UAC's receiving 25% of the profits if the items were sold.
Included in the studies performed by the military was inter-dimensional space travel…

UAC is evil, but in the manual for Doom:
"For the past four years the military, UAC's biggest supplier, has used the remote facilities on Phobos and Deimos to conduct various secret projects, including research on inter-dimensional space travel."
The military was responsible for the teleporters, not UAC.

I read all the background's you posted... nice... in regards to the terraforming of Mars, have you ever read the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson? Fascinating read, and you could easilly see it being an actual telling of history if Mars were to be colonised. As for everything else (here's where the shameless project advertising comes in to play) have you ever checked out my Doom Chronicles project? The whole point of it is to fill in the grey or black areas in the Doom story. While I am only concentrating on the actual events of the Doom games (except for an incident three years before concerning Doom Guy) it certainly would be interesting and a worthwhile addition to the project if everything before that time gets a work over too. Do you have further plans for your background or will it just stop at being fan fiction?

Ellipsus, this is pretty good. It's cool when someone actually takes the time to write a story(or timeline) that actually makes sense and sounds good. Some of the stuff around here is just annoying.
