technical question

Right.....
I have a problem

My 486 stopped working recently.

It worked fine until last week.
I press the power button and It screeches at me.
Non stop, one long continuous beep.
Moniter gets nothing.

I opened the case......
Checked every thing..

I think it is The Mother Board.
Anyone who say's I should get rid of the 486 will
get hit with the things Case.

It maybe old. But it was good.

Can someone help me please.

Actually It does. Card is in. CD
is connected to the Sound card.
It works. Actual Sound doesn't.
Has Onboard Audio as well. but Device Manager don't pick it.
Can't check Bios either
For some reason, I can not get into
Bios. Also the beep happens Immediately.
As soon as I let go of power button
I have tried Removing the Sound and Memory
And Put back in.....No Dif.
Thats why I think It is the Mother Board.
I should check the power however.....
Just occurred to me. Can't remember if the fan still runs...that might be it.....

check if the video card and the memory stick are in place.
gently push them in to their sockets.
If that's no help, reset the bios and restart.
If (victory<>1) then it's the mainboard.

I can send you an old 486/66 I have, if you really need it. It's almost not worth the shipping cost though.

As for fixing that one, it's kinda hard to locate the problem unless you have some specific tools, but take as much out of it as you can, strip it down to the processor then keep adding stuff back. With only the processor in, if it still beeps continuously, it's most likely the motherboard. If not, continue by adding the RAM, hard drive, video card, floppy drive, etc. until you see that one of them is messing your box up.

Yeah, the BIOS is most likely pissed about something.

I would open the case, remove all cards, processor, keyboard, mouse, modem and printer cables, and memory sticks. Clean the whole thing with a can of compressed air (you can get a can at any computer store for a couple of bucks) including the power supply inside and out. Then put everything back where it came from, boot up and see if it works.

If it still bombs out, you may be SOL.

You could also try removing everything but the video card, memory, keyboard, and processor, boot it up and see if that eliminates the problem. Could be a card or something else causing it to bomb.

Look on m/board where bios chip is and the battery, if battery is removeable remove for 30 secs and replace, if its soldered in, place a piece of metal cooking foil underneath board where the bios chip is, for 30 seconds, this will reset bios

I'll agree with Mac here. Get a new computer. You can get a P2-300 for maybe $200, and just use your current monitor. All will be well.

what do you even use the 486 for?

Too lazy to dig through files looking for "beep" post codes. Of the top of my head, keyboard is kaput or your memory is. Seem to recall one of those makes a continuous beep - but that was long ago (at least a week).

Can be the mb, since the beep says it's working (telling you what's wrong). Can't be the power supply otherwise it won't power up.

Try to find a hardware site that lists the diagnostic beeps. Find a match with your bios manufacturer or if nothing else look what others say. IBM set the original standard and most followed somewhat in the same path.

I remember my old games...the ones that came with my first comp (486DX). Alley Cat was one of those, along with classics like Blockout, Tetris, Golden Axe and a deatmatch super-old game called Spacewar, or Spaceship, or something like that.
