My collection of hardworked records for various IWADs and PWADs (such as HN13-223)

Recommended Posts

Greetings to Doomworld and its world-class doomers! For many years, it was great fun to watch your demos and read your fascinating, constructive comments. Pity that most of the old Doom legends (stx-Vile, AdamH&W, Ryback, Xit Vono etc.) stopped recording demos, but a few modern Doom Gods make up for it.

I'm a Russian doomer, born in Donetsk (Ukraine), live mostly in Rheinsberg (Germany). Starting from 2005, I'm playing Doom in Compet-N style. My control is keyboard only. Nearly every second I implement Strafe50 to make my maneuvering smarter, but it's not automated.

I don't have any particular natural dexterity. My records are based on firm, balanced, detailedly worked out routes (and many hours of trying to survive these routes). That's why I was able to beat times gotten by world champions (stx-Vile, TimeOfDeath, Okuplok, Kimo Xvirus etc.), get below some regular UV records while playing on UV-Fast or Nightmare, and even push the Requiem MAP16 UV Max time below the UV Speed record.

At first I used the vanilla executables, then switched to Chocolate Doom (because Windows XP is unfriendly to the Doom2.exe for DOS). Starting from SC27-446.LMP, I began recording with Prboom-Plus v2.5.0.5 (with Doom2 compatibility) -- it provides a slightly more convenient control, and its timer and monster counter are helpful for recording. Well, using PrBoom is not allowed by the traditional Compet-N rules, but my demos are meant for DSDA rather than Compet-N. I don't care about Compet-N points -- I'm collecting Doom action, rather than points.

Here's the table of my records. They are listed in chronological order, so generally they get better to the end of the list. My first four demos (recorded when I was 17 years old) are the slowest, wimpiest and easiest-to-beat ones. And the very last (67th) demo in the list is probably the top.

As you can see, 48 out of 67 records are done in 2010. That's because most of my older demos were way too bad for me to upload, and I improved many of them.

Most of my records are for the "standard" wads. I also recorded some levels from a few less known wads (2002 A Doom Odyssey, Realm Of Chaos, Gravity), because I really like those maps and wanted to make a tribute to them.

Here are two archives containing those 67 demos and textfiles with more detailed information about them. The overall size of the archive is bigger than 200K, so I divided it in two parts.

This was just the beginning. Expect many more demos from me in the future!

Second (bigger and better) part of the archive.

EDIT:

1) I noticed a mistake in one of my text files, so I fixed it and reuploaded this zip (hence the lesser displayed number of downloads).

2) My three-months-old 1:07 on Hell Revealed II MAP14 was not a good time. Kimo improved it to 1:03, and then I rerecorded it in 1:02.

Wow! This will keep me busy for the next few days for sure. :)

Like you, I enjoy "collecting Doom action" as well, and I don't really care for persnickety competition, so it's nice to have others of the same mindset. :)

No, I'm personally a perfectionist in mind, and my demo recording is unthinkable without competing with myself and other doomers. I'm a fan of "optimized action" :-) I try to play with my maximum skill, to break as many time "barriers" as I can, else I feel that my demo is lame, dull, ugly etc.

But as for Compet-N points, they are an unnecessary formality for me. The amount of them doesn't represent the true skill of a doomer.

BTW, Qaatar, I really like your records, done with bold routes and thorough time-hunt in mind (such as SD19-417 or SD33-540). You might underestimate yourself, but objectively you are one of the strongest and most serious players out there, as you compete freely with TimeOfDeath's runs.

I agree with you about the aspect of perfectionism; I'm always looking to improve my own demos, but as far as beating others, I'm usually rather reluctant.

...and let's not get carried away here. I consider myself an above average Doomer who has way too much time on his hands. Comparing me to ToD is a joke...I'm not even close, and that's a objective fact. I've never "proven myself" either (nor do I care to), so I don't think any serious demo watchers should really view my demos in any competitive light.

Edit: just watched some of your later demos...holy shit. You have some of the best movement for a keyboarder that I've ever seen. Definitely up there with the likes of Eugene K, Ryback, vdgg, and Istvan P. Forgot to put ggg and Anima (back when he was a keyboarder) in there as well. Oops. :)

I have to second Qaatar on this. You can tell from my most recent demo activity that I haven't exactly been going for "Compet-N points," either. ;)

I haven't gone through all of your demos yet, but you move damn well for a keyboarder. And some of these improvements are simply tremendous, like the ones on Requiem MAP15 (nice bar-blocking trick, by the way!) It's always good to be bold even on long levels. I look forward to watching them all. :)

Very nice demos indeed. Questions: why did you end up playing keyboard only? Don't you feel limited? Pluses and minuses?

The goal here was to go below Xepop's UV Speed record (1:40).

Damn you. Now I have to do it properly.

Thanks for the attention! I also enjoy watching your strong smooth demos (like the Darkhell UV Max collection) and reading your creative, hard-worked textfiles.

Thank you, Xepop. But I'll forever be a fan of smooth keyboard control, and I'm striving to reach new pinnacles of keyboarding.

As for Hell Revealed MAP14, I think it would be very fun for you to beat my NM record.

Haha, Qaatar and your sense of humor. There's one superfluous entry in your list of keyboarders.

Anyway, I watched 4 demos so far and will comment on 3 of them. I began (of course) with mm28 -fast - That was fantastic. A masterpiece of a demo, you invented an unthinkable route and played it through flawlessly. Out of this world demo.

m228 Max. Yeah, the beginning was extraordinary. I also loved punching a revenant while the lift was in motion (near green armor). And rocketing the mancubi at the end. Two questions: Is -fast demo on your list :-P ? Is it possible to strafe jump from one branch on the first floor to another (looked like you tried it).

rq24 Max. Oh, thanks for this. Finally a demo which I both like watching and is fast (my favourite one was Rudy's so far for aesthetics(!)). Interesting strategy here, looks like we were (previous recorders) all blind?

Yes, this will keep me busy for a while.

Thanks, vdgg! I respect your clever constructive posts, both on forums and in textfiles, so I waited for your opinion.

Glad that you liked some of my favorite demos for my beloved maps.

Yes, in M2281228 I tried that little shortcut strafejump, but failed. I might try it with -fast in the future, but maybe I'll make an improved (sub-12) UV Max run or an UV Speed run sooner :-)

I asked because I've always secretly been a little fan of keyboarding style and it's smooth turns, too. (Damn you vddg and you're mm2 crusade as I can't stand that wad :p.) But you mentioned you strive for perfection so it seemed a bit weird choice, but now somewhat understandable if you feel like that.

That list of times looks nicely drool-worthy, but even better is once I opened the archives it looks like every demo comes with its own detailed textfile explaining the route science at work. Looking forward to watching some nice HR action tonight... And, welcome to the Doomworld demo community!

Edit: something I'm curious about - what's your strafe50 setup? I use the numpad for control with 1 and 3 set up as separate strafe buttons.

Thanks, Ryback! I had fun watching your innovative keyboarding action in the past years. Glad that now I'm able to contact you. I should make my answers to some of your other HR demos in the near future. MM21-928 is dedicated to you as well.

Edit: I use the left Alt for Strafe On, and A / S for separate strafing keys.

ok i went through most of it and wow, that's quite a collection. my personal faves would be definitely sc27-446 and pl14-215, because i love highly optimized short "condensed" max runs. :) i gotta admit i'm not a fan of requiem.. the wad is sweet to play, but doesn't have demoing qualities, certainly not fit for c-n. your culling of xit's fillers was impressive though. you could probably rampage through tnt time tables as well.

anyways, your clean keyboarding style is really pleasant to watch. it's a slap in the face of all us jerky-movement adhd mouse users and brings elegance back into play. :)

Even early demos are solid and worth to watch, yet this guy on his way to perfection achieved some results that seem unbelievable at first. MM28 UV -fast is definitely a crown of mastery at the moment - absolutely amazing performance using an innovate route on the map most difficult in whole wad (and my favorite too). This is just an art - so smooth and highly effective.

Nice to see that strong players still keep coming to the community. Good luck on your further runs. :)

Kimo, nice to hear such words from a true modern God who records such hard-to-beat demos, both Speed and Max.

Great job on the Plutonia Experiment speedruns, among your other demos. BTW, I personally would like to see some Plutonia maxes from you. You are surely capable of breaking stx-Vile's results there.

Welcome to demos forum. I'm glad that new players come to the forum because it means that speedrunning flourish. You really have great skill, but you use only keyboard? That's incredible! I watched your scythe demos. Scythe is one of my favorite wads. Needless to say, sc27 is very great. Also, I was impressed by scythe UV-Fast demos. You came up with and used a lot of interesting strategy. Anyway, keep it up!

Btw, I'm inspired by your AWESOME demos. Recently, I hardly recorded demos, but I want to return to speedrunning now. Thanks!

Very glad that I could be helpful to you! Your playing also fascinates me a lot, as you record innovative max runs for heavy, hardcore PWAD maps, such as S215-647 or AV19-923, as well as some stx-Vile-beaters like SC23-156 or AV181120. These long runs, while still improvable, are pretty daringly played and seriously optimized compared to most maxes for big PWAD maps.

It would be great to see an AV20 UV Max from you, I think you can push it down to 17:XX or something.

Yep, that's right. But i still think it's better to upload my results today than a few years ago when my records were not too skillful.

BTW, would you like to take back Scythe MAP27?

Good work on PN04, looks very clean. Why the DOOM2 compat, though? Were you not aware of "-gameversion final" at the time? ;)
BTW, you can fix the table in your first post by enclosing it in CODE tags.

Yes, at that time I didn't know how to turn on the Final Doom compatibility in Chocolate Doom or PrBoom. But if I'll decide to improve my old PN04 sometime, I'll rerecord it for Final Doom.

Hello everyone,

I just came out of lurking mode to say "Hi!" to SAV88 (who also sent me a very friendly e-mail directing me to this thread). The times here look absolutely amazing, and I'll definitely watch through the runs.

I wish that you would have been around (made your runs public) already back in 2006 and 2007 -- we'd have had more fun. :-)

Cheers!

I don't care about Compet-N points

Haha, and someone does? Compet-n is hardly about points. Ever since Adam managed it, at least. For a long time it's been about the individual records, the times, and sportsmanly competition encouraging "rivals" to come up with cool routes, tricks and optimizations beating one's own records. For that reason it eventually included the cyber awards to highlight skill, dedication and style.

Personally I do prefer demos on the original engine, as I think the tools are part of the game (including visibility or control limitations). You're free to record however you like, of course. I just downloaded the packs and thus haven't watched them yet, but it looks like the old pack is all with Doom and the new one uses source ports. That might be of use to anyone updating Compet-n lists, since the older ones would be valid. The newer ones are an excuse for a capable runner to submit a faster time with the DOS engine. I cheer for those people :p

As for me, I just prefer demos that are compatible with the original engine (or at least with a not-too-different Boom engine). Personally I'm not too interested in Legacy/ZDoom records, but if a demo plays back with Doom/Doom2/FDoom (which means it's based on the vanilla physics), it does not matter to me which executable is used by the recorder.

The first 14 demos in the table are done with the DOS Doom2.exe. Same for the four demos I made in 2009 -- they are recorded on my Ukrainian computer which has Windows 98 instead of Windows XP, so I could run the DOS executable without troubles there.

All other demos in the list use source ports (Chocolate Doom or PrBoom Plus with -complevel 2).

Man, this was a great surprise, excellent collection, you really kick many best players´ asses :-) I really enjoy watching your demos, you perform possibly most smooth and brilliant keyboard-only movement I have ever seen. Plus also perfectly calculated routes, risky and aggresive play most of the time, well handled tricks ... etc.
I don´t understand why have you been waiting so long to share the demos, but nevermind, that´s your bussiness :-)
So thanks for the demos now I am goning to watch the rest of them :-)
In one txt I read some nice words about my sc17t437, so thank you. ;-)
