How do you REALLY feel about Doom 3?

Recommended Posts

Apologies in advance if there's a bazillion of these threads and you've happened to answer the same question tenfold.

But as for myself, I hated Doom 3 with a passion before I even played it. I was unable to run it at the time due to my old shitty computer, but once I got one capable of at least minimum system requirements I thought "why the fuck not." There was really nothing else better to do that day and I wanted to see if I could run it.

I feel kinda stupid now, because I actually liked it for what it was and finished the game in a quick five days last year in February. Doom 3 isn't perfect, it definitely does NOT supersede Classic Doom whatsoever, and there are better FPS games to play when it comes to nonstop action, but likewise I did think it was a cool game, and still very much Doom.

I'm actually rather saddened that it received so much negative backlash, I personally think id still got it in them to make great games and I'm eagerly awaiting Doom 4.

My verdict of the Classic Doom games shouldn't be a surprise as they're among the best games ever created, but Doom 3 at the very least deserves a 7/10. The things that hurt it for me was the often slow paced nature of the gameplay, the sprint meter really wasn't needed, much to my similar dismay in Return To Castle Wolfenstein. The emphasis on darkness (although it wasn't nearly as bad as many made it out to be, there was only one really dark area where you escorted a scientist). The game was also quite tough even on the easiest difficulty, but that could just be me sucking.

Nitpicks such as switching between your weapon and the flashlight wasn't that big of a deal to me, and I am very fond of the reinterpreted sound design, even if they pale in comparison to the more robust originals. Monsters were awesome, as were their introductions, especially the Maggot; disturbing shit. Weapons were pretty good, though the shotgun has a terrible range. The maps were a little repetitive but they got the tech base theme down pat. I wish there was more levels like Hell though, easily my favorite part in the game.

This may be hard to believe but I haven't played the expansion yet (was meaning to but never got around to it) and I would like a verdict from the more seasoned Doom 3 players of their take on it. Likewise I already know about the new additions, but nothing of the actual maps and gameplay, if it's more or less the same etc.

So, I say to the skeptical ones who never experienced it, learn from me and try it before you bash it. I'd play Doom 3 again. When it comes to "Dark Doom" though, Doom 64 is my personal favorite in that regard. But in the end, I enjoy any incarnation of Doom I can get.

Except the novels and that godawful movie.

Anyway...I played the opening sequence, and it was sort of cool but predictable. Shot an imp down...boring. Wandered through some corridors...boring. Watched my little brother playing through hell...looked pretty good, gameplay boring.

I might enjoy it if I didn't have better games to play.

I love Doom 3. It's a modern game with style. It feels every bit as original as Doom 1 -- the demons vs. sci-fi environment theme is just as authentic as before.

Complaints about darkness? Pussies. With the right brightness settings and/or monitor, you can see everything you need to see. Monsters are conveniently lit either by eyes, or when they're about to fire, so you can't say you're disadvantaged. How else would you expect a far-away installation with frequent blackouts to be? Bright, with daylight foggy mountains and cheerful music?

Slow pace? I admit I found it annoying. It was no problem in the original maps, but when I was playing some wide-open custom maps, the player was feeling puny and the game unfair, with his useless speed. I made him faster by modifying a DEF file, then I just blazed through Site 3 or Central Processing, which felt great blasting all those hell knights and revenants in continuous motion, just like in Doom 2.

Monotonous ambience? Maybe, but I think it works right. There are tons of noises combined to build up the music, relatively speaking (some of them indeed have some chords to them). The monster sounds are cool because they all consistently make wailing sounds that fit with the general depressing theme.

Too bad it couldn't overtake Doom 2 in popularity. Its original content is way too specialized into making black-out techbases and xenoarchaeological digsites and little else, unlike Doom 1 and especially 2. Which reminds me: archaeological maps are almost unique to Doom 3 -- very unlikely to encounter in Doom 2. They're slightly more common in Doom 1, thanks to the Anomaly maps.

If it weren't for the too little support Doom 3 gets from the community compared with Doom 2 (and sister games Heretic, Hexen, which are AWESOME, but I hope Heretic 3 is even better, if it's not an urban legend), I would have switched completely, and taken all the nostalgic things about Doom 1 with me.

Compared to most modern single player FPS Doom 3 is very good, it was fun seeing all the old monsters return under a new engine.

I dunno i just liked it, only thing i dislike is the PDA stuff but some people really enjoy it. There is a map editor for Doom 3 so there's no reason for it to be DULL and BORING, my guess is the community behind it is just lazy, it was a nice engine and had a lot of potential.

To be honest little anal details like this don't do a game that already lacks so many qualities that the old games had any favours. Sure it's a piece of piss to modify stuff like that, but this is neither here nor there. With the exception of the chainsaw and perhaps the bfg, id did a crappy job of the weapons.

I've stated how I felt/feel about Doom 3 in more detail elsewhere, and have no desire to post it all over again :p. In summary, I think Doom 3 is a solid game if judged on it's own terms. But when you consider the heritage that preceded it, it looks a little awkward.

Sadly there's a lot of truth to this statement. Hop over to Doom3World and you'll see that the majority of interest over the years has, for some reason, circled around trying to make Doom 3 do things it obviously isn't suitable for instead of exploiting it's strengths. Compared to the myriad of quality Doom 1/2 maps and mods (and the success of the Source and UE3 modding community), it's actually a pretty sad state of affairs.

I loaded it up expecting to get my mind blown, and all I got was generic dark corridors that looked and played the same and relied on cheap scares. I hope DooM 4 doesn't fall into the same toilet roll suspense corridor shooter that DooM 3 did.

Actually, I played it from start to finish, since I bought it in 2005, about, I don't know, five or six times... so I guess I like it. And in between every time I also finished Resurrection of Evil... despite all the general hate...

I liked Doom 3, and in fact I still activilly play it to this day alongside Doom 1/2 (Using a Mod that doesn't disinigrate bodies and melt the blood off the walls, you know, making it even more bloodier.). Doom 3 I is rather underrated by the communities, and in a few instances some people sounded like the Sonic Fanbase (Judging from what GamePro just said about them), 'bout how it's slower, and dark, and the PDA, and that IMP doesn't look exactly like the old Imp and that and this and blah blah fag fag fag...

Doom 3, while not the best game, is still a Good game! So your fighting less enemies, and the weapons aren't powerful enough or too powerful. Fuck-a-doodle-doo. The UAC didn't now what their weapons were going to be used for. And the whol Darkness thing too. Hello!? Did noone enjoy PSX Doom or Doom 64? Jaguar Doom? The Doom's that everyone remembers playing when they were young on their dark moniters and shit? Doom 3 bitches! That's Doom 3! Just less enemies here and there! But its the fucking same! Its fucking dark! FUCKING FUCK!!!!!!!!! Jesus Shit!

Doom 3 is not a bad game, and anyone who comes off the back saying that Doom 3 is bad (As well as saying the movie and the novels were bad) would be because of:

A) He/She has never played/seen/read Doom 3/Doom Movie/Read any of the Novels

and

B) He/She thinks that it is cool to denounce them because then it would make it look like he/she was fitting in with the community because he thinks they ALL hated it/them too!

Faggots (Not Homosexuals though... I know your out there, being offensive I am not trying to be) are at fucking work! Fucking themselves over trying to fit in with a commune of people worshipping a game 17 fucking years old!!!

I unloaded my shotgun into the box of kittens people! There it is!

I am a kotter at a dres faktory!

It's two mods combined actually. One is called Nitro or something, and it makes blood and bodies stick around either longer or permenatly. I don't remember the other one, but you put it in the Nitro folder, and there is more blood, and permement blood and bodies. Its fun to makes big long roads of blood by shooting zombies around floors, usin' them like a mop. You can find both at Doom 3 Filefront, I suggest you search for Nitro Mod or something.

Of course I could also just package what I have and give it in a link.

First link is to the Nitro Gore mod that Clonehunter is talking about. 2nd is a shotgun mod that lowers the spread of the shotgun, giving it a bit more range.3rd is a mod for the Cyberdemon that will allow you to kill him without the soul cube. It also ups his health a lot and makes his rockets do more damage. 4th is a high-res texture pack. Its a pretty big download and it can bog-down a slower machine.

If you plan on replaying Doom3 these mods are worth downloading. Just toss all the .pak files in a folder and when you start Doom 3 the folder name should be in the mods list. That way it will load all the mods at once. Just don't forget to load the mods every time you start Doom3.

Doom³ is not a bad game, the first experience was awesome. However, there is no replay value. The game is very long, very tedious, same thing over and over again. Compared to modern games, it's pretty good. Compared to it's predecessors, it's not so good. If the game was maybe cut in half, I'd probably play it more.

When I played the game I didn't scream at how horrible it was. It was only after people asked for my opinion (like, uh, the OP) that I said I was underwhelmed. You might be taking (some) people's opinion further than they intended - if they list a bunch of gripes they have, they might mean "this is why it's a bad game," but I think more likely they mean "this is why I would rather play original Doom"

Similarly, I would be quick to shit on Halo for being a mediocre game franchise, even though I have had fun playing it with friends. I'm just not going to buy an xbox for it

How the hell did you get the '3' like that?

Hold down the Alt key, dial in 0179 on the numpad, and then release Alt. Though you might have to do it in Notepad and copy-paste, since typing that sequence of numbers can make some net browsers do funny things.

As for me, I didn't hate DOOM³, but I was certainly underwhelmed. As was mentioned before, it's far too linear, lacking the awesome secrets and hidden levels of its predecessors, not really adding anything new in higher skill settings, and basically forcing you down one path all the way through. Listening to audio recordings to get locker combos in replays is also extremely tedious.

I applaud it for trying to go for a darker, scarier tone, since I honestly thought the original DOOM was terrifying when I first played it, and hoped DOOM³ would recapture some of that. However, it's not nearly as disturbing as I'd hoped, with stuff like the "They took my baby" segment being totally wasted and pointless. However, it's honestly pretty solid at creating tension, and I'm basically always on-edge while I'm playing the game, so it gets points for managing that.

Technically, the art design is brilliant and extremely detailed, with the level designers obviously spending untold hours stringing up power cords, placing support beams, installing computer displays and much more. Stylistically, though, it's insanely gray and dull, much more boring to look at than the surprisingly-vibrant, old DOOM games. I was also hoping for area designs that were a bit more surreal and fantastical, like Episode 2 of the original DOOM, but it was basically just endless techbase maps that all kind of blended together. Having so few outdoor excursions (and making them annoying by basically giving you a time limit) didn't help, either.

While the weapons aren't as fun to use as in the old DOOM games, it's honestly a better balance. You can no longer just shotgun your way to victory in all situations, and most choose between the extremely powerful but pitifully-short-ranged shotgun, or the much-more-accurate but weaker machinegun. I like how it made the weapons more specialized like that, even if they weren't as satisfying. And the grenades were kind of pointless.

The almost complete lack of music was a real downer. I missed the soundtracks of the old DOOM games so much. If they weren't appropriate, they could've at least used something like the ambient music in DOOM 64, but instead, it's just annoying emptiness. On the plus side, the ambient sounds themselves were well-done, and I'd like if more classic DOOM mods used similar ambient sound design.

The action was obviously toned down quite a bit, which didn't bother me too much, since I don't view DOOM as Serious Sam's predecessor. However, the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack did beef up the enemy count and had some notably larger firefights in a few spots, and I won't pretend it wasn't a little appreciated.

Overall, I think that for everything the game got right, it ended up getting something else wrong, which left it as a bit of a middling experience. I've still beaten it several times, which is much more than I can say for many games I've played, but it just doesn't command my devotion as the original DOOM games did.

It could have had a faster pace, and included more monsters from the classic games, but I like it. The first time I played through, its depiction of Hell had me in awe.

It's great but it doesn't reach its potential. Too much time in the programmers' hands and not enough time in the designers' hands. The gameplay is already tedious by the time you get to Hell. Once you beat those levels, there are about 2 hours worth of unneccessary corridor-crawling until the end.

Co-op is still fun, though.

In my opinion the level designs could have been a bit less linear, and the bosses could've been much better. The only decent boss was the hell guardian (Which in my opinion was actually a great boss) and the rest of them were piss easy. In fact, I think the Cyberdemon was the easiest of all.

Both Doom 3 and its expansion pack are great games, imo. It has some real damn good gameplay, and does not get boring when in the right mindset to play it. Not to mention it got some real good mods, too.

The story could've perhaps been pulled off a bit better, and the introductions for the different monsters are rather silly, imo. And even though it has a cool dark atmosphere, it's way too much jump scares and cheap moments were a monster suddenly pops into your face for the sole purpose of scaring your ass off and keeping you on your toes all the damn time.
Sure, there's nothing wrong with keeping the player alert by throwing monsters in his/her face sometimes, but Doom 3 really, REALLY made that idea stale some 20-30 minutes in the game. Level design could've been alot better too, although there's not that much one can do to keep a game's levels set in a future techbase on Mars interesting.

But even so, it's still a damn good game. Sure, its storyline leaves much to be desired, and the jumpscares gets old after a while, but it does a good job by bringing Doom into the modern generation, by keeping the gameplay at its front aswell as giving it a nice moody atmosphere, albeit perhaps a bit too dark. Oh yes, and the backstory kicks royal ass, and its bunch of good mods does, too.

I liked it a lot. The atmosphere had a real Playstation Doom feel to it rendered in a brilliant modern idtech engine at the time. It still makes me jump at times and the feel of play for it is totally different from the original Doom games. Change is good once in a while, some genres and other games could do with breaking their pattern a little. Call of Duty for instance could do with a major change.

I found it to be mediocre. 'Course I'm a Halo (1) fan and to me the health/ammo aspects of it felt very stale and dated compared to the regenerating shield, two-weapons-at-a-time, vehicle-driving, crafty-enemies etc of Halo. I played through it, but haven't gone back to it since. Stale crusty old bread.

Oh yea, and having to listen to generic-monster-story PDAs to get key codes to lockers and doors was boring too. Really slowed the game down.

Hell of a lot of fun, even though I only have the xbox port. About 13 hours or so in length with what was cut out of the port, fairly good for an FPS. (Then again, this is counting LP time, which of course generally involves slower gameplay than standard playthroughs because of commentating while playing etc. etc. etc.) Horror aspect was pretty disappointing in execution, but it certainly wasn't bad as a whole. I liked the story as well, though the player character showing a bit more emotion than a statue when the camera zooms out to show his face would've been desirable.

It also could've used some better button mapping (or hell, custom button mapping altogether) for the console port and they could've waited a year or two and put the console version on the current generation like Monolith did with F.E.A.R. so not as much would have to be cut out or toned down to work with the system.

It's not the same sort of gameplay as the classics (and for fuck's sake, with the thousands upon thousands of user created content for the classics, does there really need to be another official release with the classic gameplay? Bitch about modern shooters all being the same while wanting this series to be the same as it was when it started out, that's ironic and ridiculous. But I digress with this rhetorical mini-rant.), but if that's enough to say it's a bad game, I suggest opening your mind a bit to more than one kind of game.

Yeah, most PDAs are quite similar to each other, but there are subtle differences and some of them are pretty humorous. A few of the PDAs have more interesting audio logs too, usually regarding the plot. I hope Doom 4 doesn't abandon the journal/PDA/inventory interface element... I love when FPS give you these things, because when they exist, the potential of a detective/RPG mission in an otherwise mindless shooter is always there.

I think Doom3 is great, especially the expansion, which has more action and feels more like Doom1 & 2. The expansion could have been a bit longer, or Doom3 original could have had more action.
