I prefer one man megawads.
Nothing shows more dedication and respect to the game then a good quality megawad from a single author...

For a great one man megawad, check out TVR as well.

Hehe, somehow I was expecting that response. It's probably the most underrated of megawads. It was released in 2001 and made Anthony Soto's top ten wad list for that year, even though he (and myself) didn't hear about it until 2002. Actually, we both learned about it from the same place:

Yeah, an unfound gem for sure.

The first levels doesn't do it justice though, it is around mid-level it really begins to shine and from there it just gets better.

The Icon of Sin replacement is hilarious.

Why does the .zip link on the review page make me download Twilight Zone II by Paul Corfiatis?

Anyway...could this be the Thomas who's currently working on CC? The realistic design style seems to match...

I guess I was one of the (lucky) few who knew about TVR! in 2001.

1: Download it from the official site: doom.2ya.com
2: Yes he`s the same; on the CC site the link to "Thomas`s homepage" leads you to the site mentioned above.

PS: I`ll download and play the other one man megawads mentioned as soon as I have the time (which may take a while :-( )

Heh, I've played TVR!. A really nice megawad. Many of the early maps are rather innovative, and quite a few look like real places (e.g. 1 is on a train, 5 is at a resort and 8 is a rocket silo); later maps are more standard-looking (but nice!) Doom levels, with a few really weird ones thrown in (e.g. Hausterium - WTF?). Anyway, highly recommended. See my demopack for more detailed comments on some of the maps (albeit mostly from a speedrunning perspective).

I can recommend a few other one-man megawads not already mentioned:
Demonfear (Adam Windsor) - small maps, lots of fun
World of Deth (Morten Stromsvold) - I played this a while ago; I don't remember too much about it, except that I enjoyed it
NJZdoom2001 (Nigel Rowand) - a Zdoom remake of Enjay's earlier vanilla megawad NJDoom; fun maps
Herian2 (Ian Wilson) - complete with Heretic graphics replacements; good stuff - some big maps
Vilecore (Doom_Dude) - an odd mix, with some nice maps and good gameplay on the whole

Anyone who makes a map around the idea of being swallowed by a big worm is okay in my book.

About the only bad level of Tvr! is the second one. Well, it's not bad, it's just a bit uninteresting when compared to the rest.

I thought that map was at the very least OK. The reality freaks have a railway platform and a theatre to get excited about, not to mention a few nice-looking outdoor areas, while the speedrunners have the unadulterated joy of an SR50 key grab to attempt. Phwoar! :)

Especially map 18.

Thanx Grazza. It is an odd mix, I agree. I'm currently working on the rerelease / final version with new textures, bug fixes, better architecture and whatnot. It should be done sometime between Dec and Jan next year.

Heres a shot of the reworked version of map26: hellpitt temple

Yes indeed (though my dictionary gives it as haustorium). My "WTF?" referred to the sense of puzzlement experienced when playing the map.

BTW, any idea what a phragmobasidium is? And incidentally, are you related to Thomas v.d. Velden, or is the name just a coincidence?

Alien Vendetta, I gotta go through it with JDoom since I never got to finish. It sometimes strains my AMD Athlon XP 2100+ on the FPS due to the large numbers of monsters, even on hurt me plenty.

Well yes (of course),

It's term used within the Kingdom Fungi, division Basidiomycota to be precise.
The division Basidiomycota contains 15,000 know species. Fungi such as the jelly fungi, rusts, smuts, bracket fungi, mushrooms and puffballs belong to this group. All Basidiomycota produce basidia (singlular, basidium). The basidia bear the spores.
There is a considerable amount of morphological variation in basidial structures. One of these variations is phragmobasidium.

phragmobasidium:
A basidium that is divided into septated cells by either transverse or longitudinal septa, which are formed after meiosis and septate the daughter nuclei from each other.

No, just a bit of AltaVistaing. While I was at it, I did download issue 41 of Haustorium, the Parasitic Plants Newsletter, but mainly because it looks potentially useful for outweirding/outnerding people.

So, is Thomas a fungi-freak, or were the names just random?

He's no fungi-freak. He's more into virusses, RNA and stuff like that as far as I know. I don't really know where he got the names. Perhaps he just thought they sounded cool, or perhaps they have some deeper meaning. I'll try and ask him the next time I see him.

ps. Necrosis (map 27) means automated cell death, in case you were wondering.

Memento Mori series!
They were the first _true_ megawads (I mean they have strong storyline and style behind all maps).

There certainly weren't many megawads (i.e. 32/36-level wads for Doom2/UDoom) before MM1, but I'm not convinced that either MM had much of a storyline. BF_THUD! was, IIRC, the first near-mega (maps 32 and 30 weren't replaced), but one true megawad that predates MM (by a few months) is H2H-XMAS, which I think is grossly under-rated, and certainly has strong theming.

Was Icarus perhaps the first megawad that had a (modest) degree of continuity between the maps?

My own megawad must have been a pretty early Doom2 one, seeing as how it was originally done for doom1, and then a few additional levels added to it, and a few texture and monster changes made to make it doom2 compatible as soon as I got the hacked version of DEU that supported doom2.

I'm not recommending it as "one of the best" though, just an "also ran". The original version is lost in the mists of time anyway.

Oops! I remembered it earlier in the thread, but forgot it here. I seem to remember that it wasn't the first megawad I played, but there certainly couldn't have been too many others before it.

Enjay said:

Do you mean that you no longer have a copy of it anywhere? If so, I'll see if I've still got it somewhere. (Maybe on a very old computer or an only partially corrupted Jaz disk.) It's worth resurrecting it if at all possible.

BTW, does anyone remember a megawad from 1995 (or earlier) called the Cobra Episodes? I have a copy, but don't know too much about it, since it was a ripped-off version (no, I didn't rip it off; someone else had ripped it off, and packaged it up together with a bunch of lame porn textures, and without the original text file).

EDIT: I found this site. It is episode 3 that I have.
