Why is that I can run EDGE 1.26 with GL options turned on, but straight-GL ports (such as GLBoom) run lame and haltingly?

oh because those ports have not been updated in a while. Boom is no longer updated and was an early atempt at useing openGL. Besides there are 3D only ports out there that are good, but most have a software mode so older systems can use it

Yes, bigbadgangsta, I've heard of the source ports Forum, and it's far too slow for me. By the time you get an answer to your problem, you've probably already figured out what it was, or just don't give a damn anymore.
