How many people in this thread have actually played odamex more than a handful of times? Contributors don't count.

I play it almost every day with Ralphis (with an occasional Nautilus and Rottking). It's a blast and I highly encourage everyone, whether you've played Doom multiplayer in the past or not via whatever, to give the port a shot with a group of people.

yeah because everyone should stereotype an entire community from one user.

You know Skulltag runs under linux right?

What about Windows 95 then? Before you call that old, Doom 2 is older. Win95 is used on my retro machines that have good net connections so if I can't play Doom online on those then that's a very unrealistic scenario especially since skulltag technically doesn't utilize anything that really warrants the use of Windows XP

The number of votes for Odamex contradicts the number of people I see playing it at any given time, I feel. Unless all 11 people who play it posted in this thread...

Some may be joking, but the question is which port people would prefer. You can prefer Odamex yet not play it that much because there aren't many opponents on it currently, or there are some bugs to overcome.

If I recall correctly the encryption in skulltag.exe is what prevents it from running on old Windows 95 machines. However if you have the latest Windows 95 (every update) it should run.

Read more carefully. He uses it on his "retro machines". Makes sense to me, sort of.

I'd put Win98 on them, myself. It was less buggy than Win95.

Win98 has a horrible memory footprint even with 98lite

Skulltag has no 'special encryption'. It's artificially broken for Windows 95.

Or are simply compiled with the assumption of features that are unavailable in Windows 95. Since you seem like the kind of guy who would be knowledgeable on the subject of the differences between 95 and 98, do you have any ideas off the top of your head what features would cause a program to work in 98 and not in 95?

And since we're on the subject, does the latest ZDoom work in 95, so you can definitively say that it's Skulltag's problem and not ZDoom source it is based on?

Odamex or Chocolate Doom.

I might use Skulltag just because it has an actual playerbase, but it doesn't run on OS X (nor do I expect it to) so I can't.

Assuming you're using a newer MAC with an Intel chip you can install a program called Boot Camp which will let you install and run Windows XP or Linux in addition to OS X. Then you can just load up Windows/Linux whenever you want for the programs that need it and use OS X for the rest of your stuff. (Assuming you prefer it.)

Buying and running Windows just for Skulltag is stupid.

You might have some luck running Skulltag in Wine, I have no idea how well this would be though. http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX/Installing

Well, he could install linux under bootcamp and run the native x86 version of skulltag... but fuck that.

You could install Linux for free. However I never implied to do it *just* for Skulltag. I swear there are other programs out there that you might want to run which requires Windows or Linux. Not everything runs on MAC OSX but Boot Camp is a fabulous piece of software and anybody who owns a MAC and refuses to dual boot is missing out on quite a few software choices. Heck I'd dual boot to OSX if I could.... but I can't. *shrugs*

Why does everybody misinterpret everything I say? heh

Dood. Mac, not MAC. M.A.C. does not stand for anything. Abbreviation, not acronym. ;)

Edit because I'm not going to reply and end up derailing the thread:
@Aabra: Huh?! I'm not trying to insult you, I don't even have anything against you. I was just mentioning it. Jeez. o_O

After a quick search I managed to find this.

http://www.freemacware.com/crossover-mac

From what I hear it's nowhere near as good as Bootcamp but it's free and probably worth a try. No guarantees on that though.

Esselfortium: You're really just trying to find ways to insult me now. Please correct people for something worthwhile like the difference between your and you're or there, their, and they're. It's appalling how many people don't know the difference.

I have a brand new MacBook. But (to me) the point of using a Mac is so I don't have to use Windows (or Linux, but I will admit to having an Arch VM for the lulz). Also Skulltag (and possibly other Doom related material) would be the only reason to have Windows for me. I have a capable web browser, mail client, IM client, office suite (hint: it isn't MS Office 2008), photography software (hint: not Photoshop), and everything else in OS X. Also I don't have a copy of Windows. I could look into Wine for OS X though.

If you feel it's worth dedicating some of your disk space, you could use Boot Camp and install Windows.

I'm reliably informed by all my Mac-using friends that Boot Camp is crap and you should use Parallels instead.
