I'm reliably informed by all my Mac-using friends that Boot Camp is crap and you should use Parallels instead.

Ya, I read about that one too. I don't really have a lot of experience with either piece of software so I'd trust your friends over what little I've read on them.

Btw - if Skulltag isn't enough of a reason to dual boot, what about DoomBuilder? I realize that there are options out there for OS X regarding map editors but I find it hard to believe that there's one that's better than DB. I just don't understand the logic behind limiting your options when it comes to programs is all I guess... but to each their own.

Why do you have to choose? I play very actively on both Skulltag and ZDaemon, and occasionally Odamex (when anyone is actually playing...)

There...really aren't. At all. :(

You could always use DETH in dosbox.

Yadex runs on OS X (possibly requiring some patches to compile)... it's very DETH-like (both were based upon DEU).

Didn't older versions of SLADE run on OS X?

Neil compiled Slade for OS X a few years ago, but his port was never completed enough to be really usable for mapping. It had a ton of major interface bugs, even more weird crashes than the Windows version, and no 3D mode.

EDIT: If you're feeling really enterprising, you could get Romero to finally release the source code to the original Doom level editor and compile that.

DoomEd was for NeXTSTEP, so it shouldn't be too hard to port to OSX or linux. Has anyone asked Romero for the source? I remember asking him to release Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement after reading Masters of Doom, and he eventually did. If this screenshot of QuakeEd is any indication, DoomEd is probably pretty awesome. If you look closely, you can even see its icon on the right panel.

A few years back Romero gave me the am_oids source code bits. When he did, I asked him in an email if he would release the DoomEd source as well. He said he would and that he had other old Doom stuff as well that he was planning to put up on his website. I pointed out the existence of GNUstep and that OSX is based on the NeXTStep OS. Seems like he never got around to releasing it, though.

Yeah, it took him forever to put up Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement. Perhaps a friendly reminder is necessary.

A cross platform port/update of DoomEd would suit me fine as an upcoming DOOM anniversary present. It would just be pretty cool to make a map using THE editor used to make DOOM. In fact, if he does release it; I vote we organise a speedmapping competition, using DoomEd on the day of the anniversary.

What would be even cooler? Releasing it on the day so the would-be speedmappers have no time to learn the interface :)

Maybe John would agree to release the source on the 15th anniversary...
