There were a handful of decent Windows 3.1 games, but most pre-WinG stuff was just puzzle games and (very) low action games. There was an actually cool Asteroids clone (name?) and ofc Quatra Command, but for the rest Windows 3.1 "gaming" was on the same level as 8-bit arcade mahjoong games.

Is 'cdoom' generally considered better than DOS limit removing ports like 'smmu'?

I'm actually considering trying this one out now in an actual DOS machine (no emulation), because of this thread.

There would be very few reasons to use SMMU over the early EE versions. The only thing I can think of that it would do and EE didn't would be the text mode rendering, and that was something of a gimmick to begin with.

I am just amazed there was no really solid DOS Doom port. Every one of them seemed to have a weird deficiency to me (Most likely in the control department).
