If you have followed the link Nmn provided, you will have seen that there are thousands of level packs. Many are good, many are bad.

Note that level packs for Doom/Doom2 are generally referred to as episodes or megawads. These are very loosely defined terms, but generally an episode contains about 9 or 10 maps, and a megawad contains a larger number, providing a number of new maps equivalent to all or most of those in an original iwad.

If you need recommendations, then you can look here, or search the forums for threads including the words "favourite episodes" or "favourite megawads". (It doesn't make much difference if you spell it favourite or favorite - the same threads generally come up either way).

Here is a partial list of relevant threads:

http://www.doomworld.com/vb/showthr...=&threadid=9567

http://www.doomworld.com/vb/showthr...&threadid=17453
http://www.doomworld.com/vb/showthr...&threadid=24414

There are also some review sites that can be recommended. There are some links here. Some of the links are broken, but Doom Underground and Sir Robin's Castle still exist and can both be warmly recommended.

You won't find wads that are specifically for Doom95 - if they work with that, then they will also work with most other exes too, including the original one for DOS. There are plenty of wads that are designed to work with specific ports though (Zdoom is especially popular due to its extensive editing features), and many that just need any port that extends the limits of the original game, or any port that supports the features introduced in Boom (that was one of the earliest and most influential ports, so most modern ports aim to keep a fair degree of compatibility with its special features).

if i download a "wad" does it overwrite the other missions or does it just ad it on to the end? im assuming it overwrites it. if thats the case id just keep multiple copies of doom installed.

does anyone know a good wolfenstein 3D site?

No, it doesn't alter the iwad (e.g. doom2.wad) at all. The engine just loads the pwad (the add-on) and uses it instead of any maps (or other resources) that it replaces. It's completely safe.

It makes sense to keep safe back-up copies of your iwads in any case of course, as with any valuable data.

Wads can only overwrite each other if they have the same file name, and even then only if you allow them to. The exception being mods that need to be merged with your iwad, but those usually have an uninstallation method.

Yes, and note that any of those very old wads that claim they need to be merged with your iwad don't in fact need to be any more. Later versions of deusf removed the need for this - you can instead append stuff from the iwad onto the pwad:
code:
deusf -app pwadname.wad
You're unlikely to need to do even this though, since most ports don't require deusf to be used at all.

As for Wolf3D sites, there are some. This, for instance.

Of course if you get ZDoom or other source ports you won't usually have to worry about deusf.

You'll be surprised how many fan-made levels are out there... hundreds, easily, probably thousands...

I agree.

And I'd guess there are at least 5,000 wads out there. Easily. :P

Yeah, the latest file in DW's /idgames database has the number 12835. Sure, it's not all levels, but I guess most are.

i cant get the was to work... i got the wad "the darkening" episode 2 and i extracted it into the folder like it says to do so. i load z doom and it sayd doom2.wad and zdoom.wad are loaded and says nothing about darken2.wad. is there something i have to do to set it so it loads the wad or soemthing?

The easiest way to load wads with zdoom is to drag and drop the wad file (for example, darken2.wad) onto the zdoom.exe icon. You can drag and drop multiple files if necessary, and this also works with deh/bex patches.

Hannibal, your current situation looks exactly as mine did at the beginning of last year. I had been playing the DOOM series for a great many years, but curiously didn't know that such a huge community existed, and that there was an enormously massive amount of stuff completely free, just there and available for download, to expand my DOOM horizons.

It indeed felt great to witness how much I had yet to try.

Welcome to the DOOM community, man. I hope you enjoy the stay.

If you haven't already, check out these sweet sites. All of them are devoted to Spear of Destiny and Wolfenstein 3-D.

You should put the code for that post and copy and paste it everytime one of these threads come up.
