I would agree that 18 maps is a good idea for events like ZDS and FNF, but not 1-18. Instead I would pick out the favorites and scrap a couple of the crappier maps to keep more players in the servers. Maybe even insert a couple of choice jokemaps evenly dispersed to keep things random. Or if you intend to only run half and run the second half later, maybe run half of the jokemaps (there are four or so) so the second time through isn't overloaded with jokemaps.

Also, love the gif. http://zdr.nukelol.com/32in24lookout.gif

Like I said over there then 18 maps is a crazy amount to expect people to assimilate in one sitting.

I guarantee you that very few people will feel compelled to play the entire WAD no matter how many levels are featured. "Oh man, I played some CTF and it just wouldn't end! And that's why I'm an hour late for work, sir."

Those that will, though, will be disappointed to learn that only half the maps will be played.
Just saying.

Just for a heads up, a middle-of-the-weekday server of this on ST went for at least 25 maps today; I had to leave at that point, but when I left the server there were still about 10 people connected to it. So 18 maps may be too little, just sayin'.

2 servers with different maplist.
or just rotate maplists, so some get played for a week, and then another set for a week.

2 4v4 servers are better than 1 8v8

Well we ran one 6on6 server and it worked out very nicely. The (US) session did indeed run for almost 3hrs and we got through all the maps. It only fell apart when we got to map15 for the second time. That one just feels too bland and directionless to me.

The only other bump in the road was map17's Speedy CTF which is certainly not well suited for online play on Zdaemon.

But those maps should now be out of the rotations and the servers should be sticking with them until Saturday when yes, we switch to the 2nd half of the WAD for this week's ZDS :>

I wanna play Luftwaffles!!!

Luftwaffles is great. It would be even greater if we could somehow resolve the nomonsters/Mecha-Hitler issue.

Oh damn, yeah that'd be a visual worth seeing. I wasn't sure from your post if you meant that he was in there and the settings I'd specified wouldn't show him but I see no Adolf. What prevented his inclusion?

You'd say that, you added a load of detail to it, bastardized it with loads of two-color flats, Nazi symbols and textures, and then renamed it, thinking I wouldn't notice a bit. >:(

Naah, I don't mind. XP

The point of the original name was just to spark a little inspiration for a layout, so I'm not really surprised you suggested renaming it. :) I'm pleased with the layout, and the detail job, and it fits the MAP31 slot like a glove. X)

Mecha-Hitler was essel's suggestion in keeping with the theme of the map. He said he'd look into it since I lack the skills. He would replace the two Cyberdemons that are there to guard the BFG-- which brings up the added issue that most servers run with the "-nomonsters" argument, essentially breaking the map.

Interesting... and damn, that really wouldn't have been hard to do - although it might have made more sense to use the Spider Mastermind for the job. Still, Cyberdemons and Wolfenstein do go hand in hand since MAP32.

Monsters definitely tend to be disliked in CTF (and more generally in DM). The only time you usually see them turned on is when - lacking DECORATE support - people have replaced them with extra decoration/obstacle sprites. It's an odd state of affairs as monsters were popular in DM games at one point. You just have to look into some Dwango maps, Judas23 or lesser known works like Pueblo to see the proof of this.

As far as CTF goes then I remember Gollum working on some maps with monsters as a main feature and one of the TLSXCTF maps has a monster in it but no one ever runs him. Anyways thanks for pointing this out to me before we got to the session, the DMFLAGS will be altered accordingly :>

I chalk that up to poor implementation. DM monsters can work in some cases; in fact, I believe they're underutilized.

YAY

Actually it was kinda lazy by my standards. I mean Mecha-Hitler should use a 'quad chaingun' and then when he dies he turns into just plain old Hitler with dual CG. That sounded like too much dehacked work and also I figured as Bucket had gone for Cybers with a rocket attack rather than Masterminds with chainguns then I should stick with that.

Perfectionist... overthinking... Oh well, I think he rocks :D

EDIT: He still does. Unfortunately I just found out that Zdaemon 1.08.07 does NOT :<
Seems something got broke and while monsters work fine in other gamemodes they now cause CTF servers to crash. So sorry Bucket, they won't be appearing in any form for us for a while. Other ports can still have a party with it though :>
