I really love a lot of the maps that I've seen in this WAD. (Despite being unable to get 100% secret areas discovered).

The map which became my most favourite was Map 18: Elements. It just felt like those Hexen textures and that moody music and those glaciers blended so harmoniously with the Revenants and the Mancubi and the Cacodemons. :D
That one was a real masterpiece, IMO.

Sorry for the bump, but I have now had some time to dwell on the maps, and played most of them multiple times, and I have come to the comclusion that Im not a fan of the mapping style or the gameplay.

Really dont know how to explain, but...while the detailing is very good and all, it seems like its too much looks, and not enough gameplay. Also the layout of the maps are too predictable.

All in all its a good wad, and I certainly cant do any better myself (not even anything close to it), but I have to be subjective, and WOS just wasnt my thing.

On the other hand: the secrets were good! Im a sucker for secrets, and I had ltos of fun trying to find them all. Too bad the automap reveals the wall-humping-ones too easily though. The puzzle-secrets were good, and I`ll certainly look for inspiration there.

I'm going to upload a new version of WOS soon which fixes a few minor issues. One of the fixes which I've finally gotten around to doing is co-op gameplay in MAP29 where the bars now shut just before you reach the exit of each area so each player can now enter the same portal at once. When I was designing the map I never thought of this.

Update to WOS has been released. But the original version is still there. This version is located in the ports/megawads section.

The new download link is

http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=15950

Note: this version fixes the co-op play in MAP29. See wos_changelog.txt in wos.zip for more info.

Apparently Ty has made a massive stuff-up with the archives. The original WOS is still there at id15857, it is in doom2/megawads/wos.zip. The new version did not overwrite the old version and it is in doom2/ports/megawads/wos.zip. I'm disappointed in some ways.

I really enjoyed the surreal feeling and epicness of the hellish maps of this set!!!

Sorry for the bump, but Pcorf, may I please steal those cloudy skies? They would really go perfectly with one of the projects I'm working with.

Has anyone thought of doing a Nightmare run of Whispers of Satan? IMO, this is the only difficulty level that I'm willing to go through with this megawad. I AM stuck at level 3, because well, Nightmare is still a difficulty well beyond my comfort.

I'll probably try the same later, with UAC Ultra. Wads which keep using stock monsters (no new features to expect, no surprises) and not intent on being like Alien Vendetta or cramped in design work well under Nightmare.

Why don't I have a custom title by now?!

It has a monster? All with a BEX? Now that's cool. Going on UV, then.

I'll still play WoS with Nightmare. It seems balanced enough to be worth it. Or are the later levels of WoS designed to be ultra-hard on Ultra-Violence? First few maps look like normal techbases with nonlinear design, suitable for NM.

I don't think pcorf intended for WOS to be super hard, however If I remember correctly some of the later hell levels are more challenging on UV. This gives me an excuse to play it again.

I just downloaded this and i think this is one of the best Megawads there is too Doom.

I really like the levels and the music and also the layout of the levels and details.

IF Doom 2 was this i.. don't have the words but it think this i several times better that plutonia and many other. But i love plutonia but it gets a bit bring around map 20 or so.

My Mapping sucks to this :D hehe

WHISPERS OF SATAN: EASTER EGGS AND TOP SECRETS

Kristian Aro came up with the idea of the project back during a discussion between me and him on the porch of a remote summer cottage when I was in Finland in 2005. I (Paul) came up with the name the following year.

* MAP01 has a Zdoom exclusive secret exit which is hidden on the automap and does not count as an official secret. Anyway, when you reach the exit room, turn around and go back (or back track) to the starting room and you will be sent to a hidden warp zone level (MAP99) with the choices of MAP10 or MAP27.

* The sky used from MAP07 to MAP11 is an original sky made by Paul.

* MAP12 was the first level to be made for Whispers of Satan. It was originally going to be MAP25.

* In MAP16 where the Red Key is located are two windows looking out to a very dark area of blood and gore and scrubs. Look through the right window and fire and you'll see the ghostly face of SJASFACE from the Ghoul's Forest. Linedef #4954

* In MAP19 there is a message saying IN LOVING MEMORY OF LINDA on the automap. This message was dedicated to Kristian Aro's girlfriend Linda who passed away a few years ago.

* In MAP22 there is a hidden area which can be accessed near the Plasma Gun in the dark bloody wooden area in the west of the map. By pressing on a secret door you will be teleported to a bizarre secret area containing Sphongle Heads and a colourful Bike Rider who is the inventor of LSD, Albert Hoffmann

* In MAP24 in the far west cave you must execute an Arch Vile jump in order to get up to the switch. But there is also a secret door with a teleporter up to the platform if you accidentally kill the Arch Vile.

* The Sky used from MAP25-29 was taken from Doom 3's final hell level, modified and changed red.

* The red sky in the final area of MAP26 was made by Paul from scratch. The same can be said for the blue sky in MAP30. This area was to resemble the deep interior of a gas giant planet with the sunlit sky above and the dark bottomless pit below.

* The Cyberdemon at the start of MAP25 is intended to scare the player. As you play through the map you wonder where that Cyberdemon went to? - Once you've obtained all keys the awful truth is revealed in the starting area. You must fight the Cyberdemon in order to advance to the next map.

* The Arch Vile growls serve as a warning for danger in MAP25.

* In MAP29 take the Yellow Skull key route. You will end up in a wooden area. Take the right door down to a room where you have to build a staircase. Besides the staircase two Cacodemons and Pail Elementals pop out from dark acloves. Try to strafe into one of the Acloves off the staircase and move to the dark back. You will be teleported to death with a horrible message saying there is no secret here.

* In the red keycard area of MAP29 there is a small lava cave in the center west of the map with lost souls. The rock formations spell the name C A R M E N on the automap. A tribute to her lab in Simply Phobos and her lair in Death Tormention 3.

* After going through the blue skull portal. You will be in the big east canyon in MAP29 you will notice how the rocks/sectors spell the name K R I S E in dedication of WOS project leader Kristian Aro. Sectors 1275 and 1277 are also interesting.

* In the Blue area of MAP30 SJASFACE reappears above the far SW corner pillar in the darkness. Linedef #6477

* MAP32's German name Ultimative Gehemeinis translates to Ultimate Secret in english.

* The cartoon DJ's in MAP33 is a drawing by a guy named Scott Baxter from Wynyard, Tasmania. The DJ guy on the left is actually Paul Corfiatis dressed up as a rapper.

* MAP34's boss is the titlepic skull from Heretic. This was going to be the original MAP30 boss from WOS but Kristian told me to use the traditonal Icon of Sin.

* MAP35's German name Ein Lugister Ort translates to A Funny Secret in english.

* The hidden graveyard in MAP35 contains the graves of Paul Corfiatis, Kristian Aro, Michael Jackson, Bruce Lee, Albert Einstein and others.

* In Room #1 of MAP35, pressing on the Push Hier words on the wall behind the door teleports the player to a room with instructions written in German on how to beat the level.

Neat to see some insight on these maps! I loved this project, I'm going to have to redownload it and check out some of these missed secrets.
