I've decided to dabble into Doom mapping again and started working on it again. Tightened up the "shrine" a little, added an entryway and a large outdoor area which will probably lead into a volcano that also has blood flowing through it.

EDIT: Here is the current state of the .wad. I'm putting this up because I think the huge outside area is a bit too hard.

The map abruptly ends inside of the volcanic caverns, though this area is far from finished.

Nice. Looks like you've got something going there. The visuals look a bit bland at the moment (single flats/wall textures covering large areas) but I like it so far.

Detail is slowly but surely being folded into the map, with pillars, general decoration, monsters and rough lighting variations being grafted in as I go. Right now, the huge outdoor area is undergoing a bit of trial and error to see what would make it worth actually exploring.

uhhhhhhhh

That big ASHWALL wall could use some tall "steps" and varying-height "sky ceilings" at the top to break it up a bit. Unless it's just a temporary edge of a courtyard which will eventually be replaced by another building, and you just ushed ASHWALL as a placeholder as it was the first texture, that is.

That open area... not even CLOSE to being finished. It will be filled in and broken up with battlements and other bits of detail. The stairway to the volcano interior is done, i just need to finish up the open area then work on the guts (heh) of the Volcano.

Is this considered to be too many monsters in one area?

Not at all. As long as it's playable you could have a lot more than that.

Yeah, I just need to add in some more health. I do intend to /newstuff this because I am taking my time and making sure that I avoid "first map" mistakes.

In fact, a lot of first maps would be /newstuffable if the authors would just continusly evaluate their map with every change.

Looking good so far, Engineer. =)

If you plan to /newstuff this, you may find it beneficial to post a link to your map here for playtesting once it's ready. That way, if you overlook something, someone around here can catch it for you, so you can correct it and submit a playtested version to the archive.

That was the plan. Once I get some of the Volcano mapped out I will post a link here so it can be playtested.

Pretty nice. I liked the aethetic choices you made for a Doom 1 map. Good job. I think the end part is acceptable so long as the player fights more methodically instead of running out there and trying to dodge hitscans like they think they're invisible...

I caught a few things to make suggestions about.

1. I believe you overlooked to set you doorframes as lower unpegged as they all rose with the doors.

2. Also, the first demon you see upon entering the volcano prior to the plasma rifle (Thing 250) is just ever so slightly stucked in the wall, so it can't move.

Updated. File renamed "what2" because I made some changes that I may regret later on and did not want to overwrite the original stuff.

Changes:

-Huge lava cavern w/ enemies. Need help with ideas for this part. Item placement not final (anywhere.)
-Most door tracks are fixed.
-Second door added to exit to "church" to further expose player to fire and to reduce "funneling".
-Minor detailing.
-Chainsaw added to "secret" room.
