Greenwar 2 is, as you may have expected, the sequel to the highly-acclaimed deathmatch megawad Greenwar!

We've got 36 maps. We've got an awesome variety of free-for-all and duel layouts designed by Hellbent, Greenwar's original creator. We've got mind-boggling detail work done by the YEDS team responsible for the Cacoward-winning 32in24 series, as well as some other folks you might have heard of, all done while preserving the original layout and gameplay. We've got a crapload of new textures. We've got like a billion levels that Mechadon detailed up all fancy-like at the absolute last minute so that we could push this thing out the door after 2 years of sitting on it. What more could you possibly want?

Ah yes, the screenshots!

Ha! What a coincidence, I started working on my latest submission again about three days ago. I'm glad to see a deadline is in place, hopefully that'll light a fire under some people :D

By the way, proof that I'm not lying about doing work on the map:

http://mekworx.phenomer.net/mekastu...c/reallygw2.PNG

I was hoping to finish it within three or four more days, depending on how often I can grab some free mapping time. If I can get this one finished within that time schedule, I'll plan on finishing up my other claim as well. If you guys need me to re-upload any of my contributions, just let me know.

Oh and just a reminder; my last submitted map was mispelled. The correct spelling should be Paregoric. Just giving you a heads up about it again.

TGH: If the map looks OK to you in the beta, then that's fine.

Lots of stuff coming your way guys...

Firstly, I have updated all of my previous submissions.

Secondly, a few notes. I dropped the sequel II's from Recycle or Die. It seems a little silly to have them there since I'm pretty sure no one even knows of it's prequel. Also, I want to reiterate the spelling fix for ParEgoric.

Thirdly, I finished Trepidation! Finally!

Before and after screenshots:

One | Two | Three | Four

A few concerns:

  • I accidentally forgot to replace the exit after removing it while working on the map (check dw27kx.wad for original location). Completely slipped my mind :(. I can add it back in if you guys want; I recall there being a discussion about the exits in the maps and whether or not they were going to stay or go. Just let me know.
  • I did some midtexture abuse in the southern part of the map. However I may have abused it just a bit much. It was pretty full of midtexture lines and it was causing some fps lag, so I tried thinning them out without destroying the 3D look. If it's causing too much lag still, let me know and I'll see if I can thin them out some more.
  • There are some custom textures that I used in this map. I asked essel if I could make some edits of some current textures and he gave me the go-ahead. However I completely forgot to send them to him so he could update the texture wad. Really sorry about that essel! So at the moment you'll only be able to test the map in ports that allow multiple texture lumps.
  • Also, I was too lazy to look for music.

I think that's it! That map took forever to finish up D:. I hope it was worth all of the work. Please feel free to send comments and whatnot my way. I'm going to attempt and do my last claim before time runs out. No promises, but we'll see what happens.

I can personally vouch for Mechadon's ability to go to town on making a map look as well as it plays. My submission for Skulltag's IGPack was a de-imagining of Unreal's Deck16 map that kept the solid gameplay but was entirely un-detailed and bland. By the time he was done with it, it looked a hell of a lot better than Epic's original.

Holy adsfdsda; that looks fantastic, Mech!

Though I do have to admit I somewhat regret starting the trend of xtreme midtex abuse for 3D stuff in GW2, since brinks and now you, too, have completely kicked my ass at it :P

I've been playing the first Greenwar a lot on ZDaemon servers. Gameplay is awesome : fast battles with ( mostly ) the SSG, height differences, no dead ends, room for cover, etc.

Your "before / after" shots are gorgeous Mechadon, you've put a lot of effort on those maps. But I'm afraid gameplay will suffer.
Take shot #4 for instance. On the old version, you could see if someone was getting the Chaingun on the farthest area on the right, or you could notice players approaching in the distance, far behind the switch in the PG room. This could lead to very tactical, cat-n-mouse games.
On the new version, I can't even see the Chaingun on the right.
It's dark, and those vines doesn't help.

So yeah, basically, great work on detail. But please, please don't forget about those who'll try to play it, expecting the same kind of fun as with the old and loved Greenwar.

Hmm, I think I might detail something. Need to get my mapping muscles flexing again, after Skulltag speedmapping helped me a bunch. ;)

(I'll decide when will be an ideal time to pick my map and then post here again.)

How exactly does the map naming convention work?

This has been brought up in the past - it's a little late to bring it up again now - and has pretty much gone unheeded in a lot of cases, because as everyone knows 'pretty>framerate'.
But what else could Hellbent do? He offered the project to the ZD/ST communities previously and while I did a lot of work there then there just wasn't enough overall interest.

In other news then I submitted a couple of later maps that still need to be added to the WAD and crossed off the list.
For starters I took out e3m7dmx
Then I finished off Kuchi's stab at la33dX

Someone should take a quick sweep through those later thread pages just to check nothing else has been forgotten ;)

i'm rooting for you guys. i consider greenwar the best ffa wad ever (as most of the best ffa players do), and i got back to dooming through it on zdaemon. don't mess this up! :)

i have to say i'm a bit worried, the screenshots look awesome... but... crudreams. if i can't see shit but the megacool decorations and get bumped off sophisticated textures, it's not playable. turn the lights on, please!

Guys, if anyone is wondering what the maps will play/feel like in addition to look like, simply download the beta in the first post. The gameplay is definitely retained pretty well, in my opinion, and I've spent extensive time testing it online. It got the thumbs up from a good number of high profile DMers; but of course this was during UDMX development and they were working heavily on that project, so they wouldn't tell me GW2 was better <3

Just a little something to show that I've started making progress again. I remember showing an old screenshot of this map to a few people, but I forget if I ever released it publicly. This map is about 50% done right now. I should definitely have this one done by the deadline (assuming nothing goes horribly wrong, of course), but I'm pretty much stumped on what to do with a few areas in my other map. I'll attempt to finish that one after I'm done with this one, and if I can't come up with anything good I'll just release what I have done to see if anyone else has some ideas.

Are you talking about yourself, or are you somehow trying to insinuate that I'm holding a grudge for responding sometimes when you make annoying, dickish posts about a grudge you've apparently been holding against Scuba for the past two years? Either way, very nice.

2009 has been a HUEG year for multiplayer wads in Doom.

I feel there's going to be a lot of butthurt from at least 3 parties when the cacoward is handed out.

Who gives a fuck about the Cacos? (I usually find them to be pretty laughable in the realm of deathmatch anyways.)

So can we please end the offtopic and just try to get GWII finished this year?
