Here's a few screens for my map so that you guys know it's not just a box with monsters:

No.

This just sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. Slaughtermaps are not fun purely because they have a lot of monsters in them. Play the last ten maps of Scythe II, and look at how much purpose there is in the placement of every single monster. Those maps only have ~200 monsters in them, but they achieve a high standard of slaughter style gameplay because of the skill of the designer. Your maps will also succeed or fail based purely on your skill. No one is going to play them just to look at the monster count.

I love slaughtermaps, but the fact that everyone here is talking about nothing but monster count just makes me lose interest in this project. Sorry.

Looking forward to Jodwin's map, though. :p

I agree as well.

Also, if the maps are going to have 14,000+ enemies then how is it going to be fun? I probably won't even be able to play it because it would lag so much. 1,000 is still kinda ridiculous because I could simply go Doom Builder, create a massive square and some stands and then fill it up with monsters. Why would it take so long? I've got an old map that can be used but I was just testing stuff in it.

I don't.

My map only has about 700 and something amount of monsters in it, because I created a balance between monster count and monster placement. The map isn't just a large box shaped room with monsters in it, and I think it would be unfair to dismiss all of the maps as being like that.

EDIT: By the way, I added a backpack to my map and also removed the BFG 9000 from it because I felt it was making the map too easy.

Boxes or no boxes, that layout looks confusing and ugly as hell. Granted that I don't know how the map actually plays, but those revenants look like they could be highly annoying if you are spending most of your time walking on ledges. You should also seriously consider changing some of those textures as some of them look bad. The lower screenshot made my eyes bleed because of all of the brown.

EDIT: Also, isn't the room in the second screenshot just one large box room, but with lots of shapes?

EDIT: Sorry OP but I decided to release my map separately. Good luck with the project, though.

I'm probably gonna load in a texture pack and retexture after I'm done mapping it out and redo a bunch of things. I already changed the revenant pillars so they're easier to take out. The layout won't be too confusing, I think. You'll be able to figure out quickly where you need to go to do things.

E: To your second question: No

CheckIWAD: IWAD tag doom2.wad not present.

I get that message even though both doom.wad and doom2.wad are in the prBoom folder :/.

Reinstall the DOOM WAD from fresh, that worked for me, as using the IWADS with Zdoom somehow made them incompatible with Prboom+

I don't think everyone feels that way, most likely those of us who think differently just didn't want to pee in their cornflakes, but now that the cat is out of the bag...

I look at it as the same thing as when people talk about linedef count in normal wads ; irrelevant to the actual quality, and, yes, potentially detrimental to the map if it's the sole focus.

That said, I don't think people mentioning one easy quantifiable metric necessarily means they confuse quantity with quality. Although, to be fair, some of the screenshots so far make me a little dubious. One month to polish it up still? ;)

Dont lose interest in this just because people are talking about monster count.. Slaughter maps are slaughter maps because of either monster placement or monster count. More so the latter then the first. Im not going to lie, i like slautgher maps because of the monsters, because of the size, and most of the time because of the detail. I have yet to come across a slaughter map that someone didn't put alot of time or effort into. Dont get me wrong i love challenges like hunting micro switches, or jump mazing it, but i prefer the smell of SS in the morning, or watching some Imp fly 20' back and splatter from a rocket.

I'm kicking myself that I didn't think of that. That makes much more sense. I didn't notice you were one of the people who signed up, either, or else I might have stayed quiet. I need to read more carefully.

Well, I'm more optimistic than I was. The people involved with this are more varied than I guessed based on the comments on this thread, so there should be a few interesting maps at least.

However... how much time does it take to thoroughly playtest a map with 17,000 monsters in it? Is a month long enough? :p

Broly3k9 said:

I don't, and I'm not. I expressed skepticism because monster counts seemed to be the only topic under discussion. When people asked what a slaughtermap was, various people defined it purely by referring to monster count. I don't think gameplay was even mentioned until I bitched about it on page 3.

lol, I dont think scoredoom's engine will be able to run that map! Maybe in a few years time with new hardware.

This looks like prboom will be the only engine capable of running this wad properly.

I will say I've been "thinning the herds" a bit on some parts that were a bit too ridiculous and moving them to a later point, though I will note the map has gotten too big for me to playtest it properly on my computer, so when I finish it I'll have to have others check the health/ammo situation.

It's still not complete yet, it's at about 75% complete. I'm on the last room right now. It should be "done" today.

My monster count has passed 20,000.

Okay, I've started a new slaughter map. This is going to be relatively big, certainly not cramped and it's based in hell. We're allowed to do it in a cave right? It's still very open.

I would really want to participate. But I don't know if I could find the time. Maybe I'll drop by later with a map. Probably HR styled.

DoomHero85: I think you would enjoy playtesting my WIP, it's pure slaughter, sunder-style :]

Turned out a ton of the monster groups were too close together and couldn't move, and as such had to be trimmed down significantly. I'm back at 15,746, though still not done. I still think by the end of this I may reach up to about 20,000 again.

No, I might later, I busy with this map, and I'm trying to finish Reverie.
Here's some more screenshots!

The start...

http://img814.imageshack.us/img814/8725/check3.png
The start of the outside area, don't worry, there's a plasma rifle in there, you just can't see it in this shot ;).

It's a lot of fun, it's called "Death Below".

Looks good, but still needs more monsters. Look at the shots of Truedude's, Somewhere between what you have here, and that would be good.

Yeah, I'd agree.

In fact, with slaughter maps, I'd say it's best to, initially, put too many monsters in and slowly delete them as you balance the map, rather than the other way around.

OK. The only problem I have with testing is lag issues (I don't know why half the time) or the fact that I'm not a pro at the game at all and revenants and mancubuses give me a hard time if I don't have any cover...
