The only map I remember thinking was bad in ZPack, period, was one I think was early in E2 that was just a bunch of spuriously detailed square rooms connected by hallways and doors. Basically your average amateurish map but with a veneer of floor or ceiling detail and maybe a few ZDoom features. I have no idea why they included it.

I thin you're referring to E2M2, by InsanityBringer. I found that one of the most boring maps too. Might be E2M4 by Icytux though - although I recall that being a little better at least.

Besides Terror Cube (which is still the highlight of the bunch by far), other levels I really liked a lot in ZPack but never seemed to rise up as far as Vader's maps or Sector would be all of T667's maps as well as skillsaw's E3M8.

And there were some other maps I at least thought were worthwhile, so overall I agree with your thoughts in that there really isn't nearly as much bad in ZPack as many make it out to be.

i think map21 (nirvana) is a great map. it has frenetic tempo, a few simple puzzles and it's a whole bunch of fun. it also has the awesomest speedrunning trick in doom2, the YK bars strafeglide. people bash it because it's a sandy map, disconnected and speedmappish, yet it pummels most of your precious e2/e3 maps into the ground. maps like nirvana paved the way to fun-oriented wads like scythe.

Yeah, Nirvana's a pretty cool map. Some areas of it have a great otherworldly surreality to the way they function. :)

Some of the King REoL maps, like 2fiffy0 (REoL TOUGH: Special Edition), 2fiffy5 (The Abandoned Mines), etc.

In IWADs, E2M4 (Deimos Lab) and MAP24 (The Chasm), because they're dripping with atmosphere.

Usually for me it's the other way around.

I actualy like that moonbase map by InsanityBringer.. it is one of few zpack maps I remember.. heh.
I like these Unreal ambient sounds, that fail use of rail *ride*, these parts you can see from window but you wont get in them, plasma gun secret with many corpses, that little detour with enhanced red *pinky* demon which eat some marrine near railway and finale on rooftop. call me crazy.. did I win this thread? :)

the e2m4 was really boring.. only part I enjoyed was finale with chalenging (scripted) archvile fight

Adam Windsor's Requiem maps. Everybody calls them the "filler" maps, but I really enjoy them for what they are. The thing about Requiem I think is brilliant is that everyone just sticks to what they're good at; Iikka makes crazy Doom level tricks like 3D bridges and lifts and stuff. Anthony Czerwonka for the strong aesthetic designs and awesome textures being put to good use (that doomguy crucifix comes to mind). Dario Casali for a good, challenging Plutonia-esque battle stage. And Adam Windsor for small, action-packed levels that are quick and violent. That's what I love about Requiem, you can recognize all the different mapping styles and I think they work well together as a megawad.

Zpack gets bashed quite a lot (Excluding Thunderpeak, Vader's maps and Xaser's fantastic Sector). I honestly enjoyed the diversity, and didn't mind the contrast between massivily detailed levels like Blackrock and more simple levels like E2m2. While some of the levels were not as visually appealing to look at, it still provides a fun playthrough.

And in terms of a level that everyone seems to hate and I liked - E2m5 (The fan level).

http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=3716 - nazi cave from hell!

i always liked this map. one of my first levels was inspired by this one [good thing i never uploaded it]. must have been one of the early doom user maps that i played.

i still play it from time to time and its always fun. dont think i ever finished it though.

MAP10 of Community Chest 3. Something water facility stuff, very unique map. Although I read that community didn't like that map.

God damnit, how I hated that map...line horizon with grey bricks...bloah.

Community Chest MAP21 is my favorite map in the wad so far, but the archive rating for the standalone version wasn't very high.

cjwrights maps weren't terrible. they weren't the apex of perfection that wright assumed they were, either. Some of them played decently but they were just plain ugly. I realize the triviality of attention to detail but there comes a point when it seems almost as if one is trying to make the wad an eyesore. cjwright took most of his maps to that point and kept running. And may the alleged baby jesus help you if you called him out on that.

And that part about them playing decently was an outright lie to get you to not think that this was a completely negative review of cjwrights works; while I do not consider them terrible, they are no more than half a step above that status.

So yeah...you win the thread. I'm curious as to what you find so endearing about them.

Mine is psycophobia. Really, I've seen tons of topics where people hated on this wad, but I never really understood all the hate. I played most of it, and loved how it was done. I liked the gameplay of pretty much every map in there. Even the levels that were hated amongst people who actually played it, I liked. I still have it, and I use it's lab map often, as it's very entertaining watching custom monsters pitted against each other. Good, clean fun.

What's yours?

I've never seen a PsychoPhobia hate thread before, that's news to me. I at least hope my music isn't part of the hate!

I disagree here. Because I also loved Crimson Canyon. Solid maps, brilliant music choices except for maybe the last few levels, and fantastic straight forward no BS gameplay. :)
