The Eternity/Infinity/Serenity series, when I was looking at the origins of all the stolen material from that fake Chex Quest 3 from back in the day.

Assuming you mean pwad, then my answer can be found in three previous threads where this question came up.

I think it was ASD2 or Raven.

They were definitely the first two - I'm just not sure of the order. They were both pretty decent, though I preferred ASD2, and still view it as the better of the two.

I don't think any of the maps called alcatraz are at all similar to the actual place.

Alien Vendetta. Being 11 at the time, I don't remember how far I got. I do remember being amazed at the design and size of the levels, and especially how many times I got my ass kicked by Revenant rockets. Was very close to beating it until the hard drive gave up the ghost. Without the attention span I had as a kid, it would take a while to beat it now. I do plan on it sometime..

Unsure which one in particular, but I do remember the first few megawads I played was Hell Revealed and Scythe.

I can believe that and, although I'd never been to the place, I remember back when I was playing the map that it didn't convince me as a realistic place. I didn't know this before playing though, I was selecting PWADs purely on the filename and sometimes the author description. I think there might have been an Area 51 and Fort Knox one too.

some crappy 1994 wad probably beginning with A or 1 since i took them in order as they were on some "sensational" shovelware cd that shamelessly sold non-commercial fanmade maps. i think it had a shot of the automap and a purple demon with yellow eyes on the back of its cover, although i'm not sure. so i went playing them in the order i found them until i got bored, because most were really bad, but back then custom doom maps were something special. i went on downloading them from cdrom.com as i found this address in the text files. so i got requiem and memento mori, iirc these were my first megawads, and enjoyable.

Why some people choose anti-doom gameplay experience like HR for their first pwad is mystery for me...

In my case they were few pwads at the same time: Icarus, MM, Requiem although Icarus was probably first.

I visited Alcatraz about a month ago, and when I got back home I played through the maps that were called Alcatraz, and there was no similarity. Even the one in Hacx, which at least seems like a fairly convincing prison on an island, has very little similarity in terms of layout. But the cell doors are somewhat similar to those installed when it became a federal prison and the shooting gallery (areas where armed guards can watch the prisoners while out of reach of them) elements are there. So perhaps it is at least "inspired by Alcatraz".

There's certainly an Area 51 wad, though perhaps you're referring to an earlier one with the same name.

There are some wads that claim to be like real places that I can personally verify are broadly true to life. The Unholy Trinity and Copenhagen Central Station are the most notable, while St John's College and Chester are OK in terms of layout. Also G8.

A few other threads where wads based on real places were discussed:

Thanks Grazza, what a vastly informative post :-)

I still like the idea of maps inspired by real places (community project?) Inspired is the word though. Unless the place in question happens to have an interesting layout I'd rather the map just take enough elements from the place to give the player a sense of recognition as opposed to striving for accuracy at the expense of gameplay.

It was definitely maps off of the D!Zone 2 shovelware CD I was given, and I still do despite have been heavily used (thus copying contents to disc in own directory)

Technically the first PWAD I played was a deathmatch wad, gothic99 to be exact. Singleplayer wise I think it was KamaSutra that I played first. Although, I've only been playing PWADs since June 2010 :P

The first Pwad I`ve ever played (approx. in 1995-1996) contained levels from EP4B.wad and EP5A.wad (level collections, don`t know authors, dated April 1994), 2 episodes total:
-Episode 4! Yahoos in Hell
-Episode 5! Yahoos Burning (HADE`S HOUSE OF HORRORS)

And now a question: why do I like classic music so much ;) ?..

Eternal Doom III was my first, many years ago when I was not even in High School yet. I remember being simply shocked on how massive a doom level could be. After spending countless hours working my way through the game, I gave Icarus a try, and was able to blaze my way through that.

+1 for the random shovelware map long before the days of accessible Internet.

I don't know if it's a coincidence, or just acknowledgements for their gameplay influence, but when it comes to hard wads like HR, AV, and Scythe, the Casalis, along with their Final Doom megawad Plutonia, are mentioned sometimes...

IWAD, probably Doom.wad.
PWAD, maybe Heroes2.wad.
