You have to be made of balls.
Strafe is a perfectly legitimate move and it was back in the days too.

Heh, I agree with you that strafe has always been perfectly legitimate, it is just that I didn't use it back in the day, so I thought I would try it out once again.

Just as an aside, I managed to kill the cyberdemon w/o strafe, through running, quickly turning towards him and firing off rockets/plasma, then turning and running again. Good thing that e2m8 of DTWID had plenty of room to move around. Great level too. The funny thing is when you have no strafe, the invisibility ball was actually really useful. I picked it up against the cyberdemon and was able to stand still and load him with plasma without having to go through the arduous task of actually moving. Standing still pouring plasma into the cyberdemon while rockets whizzed past either side of me was kinda cool. Almost like a "You Shall Not Pass!!" sort of moment.*

*Of course, much to my dismay, the cyberdemon does get the odd rocket on target, even when you are invisible. You can probably guess the results.....

I put it there assuming that newer players might not be as comfortable with strafing by then as it personally took me a while as a kid to become so. Glad to see it was helpful :P

I don't remember exactly when I started strafing but you're right, when Doom was first released I didn't strafe. Whether it was because I didn't know how or it just didn't seem useful to me.

It seems odd to me that they even bothered adding alt+arrow to strafe (which is the way I did it for years until very recently). It would have made more sense to use a couple keys close to your left hand, or maybe default to the number pad instead of arrows and use 7/9 to strafe.
