Why don't I have a custom title by now?!

This boasts 1300 levels for Doom, 90 for Doom II, 220 tools and editors for Doom, shareware Doom, and a bunch of other stuff a lot less relevant to this forum.
Full listing is there. What will interest people is the content of D_WADS and D_II_WADS; maybe D_TOOLS but I'd be surprised.

I have two questions:
1. Can anybody identify the level on the cover picture? I've always wondered where they found this train station.
2. At least some of the levels are not on the idgames archive. I've checked a few names randomly and found some that I didn't find (heh). Does anyone know of a tool that can automate checking the archive for presence of a file somewhere? Because I'm not checking about 1400 files by hand.

Also, if anybody sees there a lost file they want to get, don't hesitate. But to preempt the inevitable question: no, there aren't any Odessa levels in there.

Holy shit 1300 levels!? Well, considering that each map is probably around 100kb, it wouldn't be that big, but still...1300!?

I find it funny how inconsistent the dates on the G_ADDONS directory's files are, ranging from as early as 1986 to 1994.

If you already have a mirror of /idgames (even a really old one) then your best bet is probably to run one of those duplicate file checking tools (often used to scan through tons of picture files). I never needed to try any of them, but there exists a bunch of *nix things of that nature. Just looking real quick though my /usr/ports tree, I found this:

http://netdial.caribe.net/~adrian2/fdupes.html

Fdupes is a program for identifying or deleting duplicate files residing within specified directories.

This one uses MD5 hashes to identify files. You could probably build it in OS/X or Cygwin, but might as well search for a native equivalent first... It's nothing complicated though, any decent scripting language can be used to write an equivalent tool very quickly.

As can be expected, some of the unarchived files are early versions of WADs presently on idgames. I recognize two editions of Chris Klie's THUD series (compiled into BF_THUD) and an early version of SIN2_9 by Kurt Maples, not to mention what are likely individual releases of some of the RAVEN series.

Nice find, don't recognize the location.

Best I can do is compare that list against one generated from my archive.

There is a map on the Maximum disc that may be the one featured on that cover. It was a large grey level with many tube train stations and has a picture of Taz the Tasmanian Tiger at the start. In fact it might even be called Tasmania, but I'm not sure.

I'm getting plenty of name matches but no size or datestamp matches to go with them as yet, so matching files involves a bit of guesswork. If you're able to generate a filtered list of the Zip's contents I'd stand a much better chance of matching the wads. Most of the Zips are older than their assumed counterparts in /idgames, though that probably just means they did a bit of BBS-hopping before reaching the archive.

Many of the zips contain the old FILE_ID.DIZ stuff; which is also why a hash match on the zips themselves wouldn't be enough to sort out duplicates.

I'll look into generating a more useful list.

I think the cover might be SUBWAY.WAD. Note that this guess is based on memories of a map I last played probably 14 years ago and the idgames description that seemed the most familiar, so I might be wrong :)

I've checked, and no; it's not subway.wad (subway21.zip) nor subway11.

There's some interesting custom textures in subway.wad. Nothing mind-boggling, but it's nice to see custom resources in so old a file that haven't been reused everywhere since. The MIDI, however, is horrible. :)

By the way, if anybody wants to get a better view of the cover, here's a high-res scan (1410x1414).

Suggest you submit it to cd.textfiles.com, once it's up there everyone can poke at it at their leisure.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through and might consider myself to have done well if 3/4 of the zips are identified. If a better listing tool is proving hard to find, you could point the command line version of 7-Zip at that CD and type...

7za.exe l e:\d_alien\*.zip > d_alien.txt
7za.exe l e:\d_ii_wad\*.zip > d_ii_wad.txt
7za.exe l e:\d_tools\*.zip > d_tools.txt
7za.exe l e:\d_wads\*.zip > d_wads.txt

...then let the hardcore wad archeologists wade through its verbose listings.

Some kind of checksum of the archives' contents would be very useful (much better than just file size & timestamp). 7za doesn't appear to list that, but my version of unzip does (UnZip 5.52 of 28 February 2005, by Info-ZIP). Example output:

code:
$ unzip -lv idgames/historic/doom0_2.zip Archive: doom0_2.zip Length Method Size Ratio Date Time CRC-32 Name -------- ------ ------- ----- ---- ---- ------ ---- 540 Defl:X 346 36% 02-11-98 09:30 6d587c55 doom0_2.txt 118 Defl:X 106 10% 12-04-97 17:18 55969e60 readme.txt 259177 Defl:X 107030 59% 02-04-93 15:20 ab5e87f7 doom.exe 496250 Defl:X 152724 69% 02-04-93 15:20 2587d97b doom.wad -------- ------- --- ------- 756085 260206 66% 4 files

Edit: well looks like "7za -slt l foobar.zip" would show the checksum, but in a much more verbose manner (like 12x more lines...)

That's certainly easier than what I had set out to do.

d_alien.txt
d_wads.txt, 11BONES.ZIP to E2L1GC.ZIP
d_wads.txt, E2L2_GG1.ZIP to TEMPLE_2.ZIP
d_wads.txt, TEST2KIL.ZIP to __DOOMCH.ZIP
d_ii_wad.txt
d_tools.txt

d_wads.txt was big enough to need to be split into three parts.

E: And while I was pasting all that, a better tool is suggested.

d_alien.lst
d_wads.lst, 11BONES.ZIP to FOREST21.ZIP
d_wads.lst, FOREST30.ZIP to __DOOMCH.ZIP
d_ii_wad.lst
d_tools.lst

How rude of me not to say "thanks". *slaps wrist* Thanks Gez.

By way of penance I've reformatted and merged the listings so it now looks like this -
