|Strange Indecision||March 14, 2007, 5:17 pm|
Just found out my father died on sunday, at the age of 50.
Thing is, I dunno how I feel about. We were never really close. Hell we lived on opposite sides of the country. Only spoke every couple of months, and that didnt even start happening until a few years ago.
On one hand I know this means I'll never get to know him very well and I guess I do feel bad about that. But on the other hand it's just kinda like "oh well". I do regret never having traveled to visit him.
Mostly I feel bad about not feeling as bad as I think I should, if that makes any sense.
|Bitter-sweet deal||January 21, 2006, 3:39 am|
So today I bought a compaq presario 1500 laptop from someone for $10. The specs are decent, especially considering I paid next to nothing. However, there's a reason I got it for so cheap.
There's a problem with the LCD backlight. It shuts off at what seems like random times, never coming back on without powering down the machine then powering up.
The problem seems to be a loose cable running to the screen, but Im not quite sure. Sometimes, just slightly touching the screen will cause this to happen, other times I can wiggle the screen around quite a bit without any problem, and yet other times it will just shut off on its own. I was also able to reproduce this behavior while viewing the bios menu.
So, anyone have any ideas on what I could possibly do? I've never had to work on an LCD screen before, but Im sure as hell not gonna pay to have it fixed, so I wouldnt mind trying it myself. I'd be losing only $10 if I end up destroying it.
Tips are appreciated.
|I bought a remote-controlled helicopter||November 1, 2005, 8:00 pm|
And broke it in a matter of minutes.
It's a "6 channel" helicopter meaning that the remote has more buttons, knobs, levers, and dip switches than anything should ever have. The draw to these kinds of choppers is that they can do tricks like loops and upside-down flight. It still functions but the tail is bent. Bending it back into place should take care of that but I can buy a replacement for like $5 in the worst case scenario. Main blades are chipped but I have replacements for those.
Basically what happened was that we decided to test it out in the office. Little did I know that this thing was going to be quite difficult to control. Despite my best efforts to keep it steady, it pitched backwards during takeoff and caught the floor which caused it to snap against the ground, thus bending the tail.
See, the thing was shipped in from China and the instructions are in incomprehensible engrish. So figuring out the functions was practically impossible without actually attempting flight. Guess I should have gotten that flight training software along with it (I just had someone place an order for it as well as a training kit to help keep it level). But hey, at least it still works!
I'll post pics as soon as I get home.
So uh, anyone got any comparable stories?
|X-Treme Pong||March 1, 2005, 12:59 am|
Player 1 is controlled with the up and down arrow keys.
Player 2 is controlled with numpad 8 and 2.
I banged this out today and friday when I had no work to do. It's pretty simplistic obviously, and terribly coded, but Im kinda proud of it since I managed to write it without any help at all. The collision sound effect was downloaded though so I cant take credit for that.
Thing is, I dont really have anywhere else to go with this. All I really have left to add is a keyboard config screen and maybe some other useless options. Perhaps a title screen, and a way to restart the game is probably a good idea too. But otherwise I guess I'll be done with it soon :(
|Mini Shopping Spree||February 5, 2005, 11:33 am|
So recently I gave in and bought a console, specifically a gamecube. In the past I didnt want to get noe because I dont want to deal with hooking it up to a television. I'd looked into methods of connecting a GC to a VGA monitor but they were all expensive and not without flaws. Later on I was speaking to Gooberman on IRC when he mentioned that he has his GC hooked up to a TV capture card. After some quick searching I found a cheapo capture card for ~$30 and bought it, along with:
The TV card has a radio reciever but I dont think I'll bother with it. The S-Video cable has felt like a waste as I cannot tell the difference between the s-video quality and the standard composite cable. Zelda has been kinda weak so far but Metroid Prime is awesome and Im amazed at how comfortable the controls are. All in all, fun is being had. Total cost was under $200
One weird thing did happen though. I bought the GC and zelda at a local Gamestop and upon returning home, I noticed that there was an extra item in the bag. It turned out to be a copy of Castlevania: Lament of Innocence for the PS2! I quickly pulled out and inspected my receipt but the game was not listed. As best as I can tell, the guy just accidently dropped it into my bag or something while handling my merchandise. Unfortunately I dont have a PS2 nor do I plan to ever buy one. So now I have to find someone who wants a free PS2 game and hasnt played this one.
Also I went to a local H&R block and did my taxes today. I'll be recieving a return totaling $8,491. Not too shabby.
Finally, here's a picture of what the back of my machine looks like with all this crazy crap plugged into it:
14 cables total
|Back in action||December 21, 2004, 10:33 pm|
As Im sure you all noticed, I was gone for a few days. I can only imagine how much pain this caused everyone at the forums. But dont worry, Im back to set things right!
I was away at seattle for a few days. It's the farthest I've ever been from home. Hell it's on the opposite side of the country from where I live. While there I stayed with Sargebaldy and Danarchy.
Here's some pictures!
The city is quite cool (although nothign can ever be as cool as hometown NYC). And I had a lot of fun. Saw all the important attraction except the underground city tour. But overall Im totally glad I went.

|Wootage||September 21, 2004, 12:53 am|
So, I finally got my copy of the doom 3 theme on vinyl, number 84/500. The cover art is quite nice. And of course it's signed by Chris Vrenna. The album has some other song on side B but who really cares about that. The package also came with a sampler CD filled with music and game trailers which I havent bothered to even open, and a tweaker postcard.
Also pictured above is the GBA SP that I picked up last week. Just in front of it is the flash cart which I finally got in the mail today. It's a 512 megabit cartridge so I've been able to "back up" several games on it. The software for writing games has built-in support for NES, Gameboy, and Gameboy Color games.
The NES emulator is quite cool. I can hit the R button to bring up the menu and select the NES game I want as well as set autofire, manage savegames, and even save/load game states. There's also functions for viewing text and images, as well as a memo/alarm system, none of which I will ever use.
So yeah, wootage!
