About This File

You need a registered version of Ultimate DooM to play this. 2.2 Mb when unzipped.

This is a full, nine map DooM 1 episode incorporating the 5 previously released 'Spooky' maps plus 4 spanking brand new, neverseenbefore ones. If you've already played the spookies, then sorry but I have decided to release this wad purely for my own benefit. I wanted to sign off from DooM with some kind of accomplishment i.e. a complete episode for Doom 1....and this is it!!

The new maps are e4m1, e4m7, e4m8 & e4m9 in case you don't want to play the spookies again. Each map is designed to be played from scratch.

This wad will run with v1.9 and is not exclusive to any port.

+++ SPECIAL NOTE FOR ZDOOM USERS +++ You must use the extension "-noflathack" in the command line, otherwise this wad will crash.

crusades.wad is one of the finest vanilla Doom experiences ever created. It's just a set of really well-made, well-paced maps filled with striking details and brutal, punishing difficulty. No huge mazes, convoluted switch hunts, or artificially inflated monster counts, just good ol' fashioned Doom level design. 4.5/5

this is grand for an E4 replacement, the exact difficulty curve, the setting, it all fits out very nicely for this one. level's are quite short but that's not a bad thing, the setting nails the TFC outlook pretty well and the sounds are...manageable. balance is actually quite tight, and you can expect some maps like E4M4 to bite your heels pretty harshly (lava walking and the teleporting enemies). the final stretch of E4M8 is silly but isn't too detracting from the rest of the set. still an E4 replacement that I highly recommend, great for its time and it ages well.

For a wad from '99 this is damn good, even by today's standards.

This has some of the best level design ever. Very atmospheric with lots of great shadow effects and details. Unfortunately it's let down by unbalanced gameplay. Lost Soul rape, a lack of secrets, and several strong monsters in a cramp space with little ammo. Such a shame because the design is second to none. 3 stars. -TRRobin.

The architecture and at times dark, creepy atmosphere are simply beautiful and the gameplay is extremely hard. The ammo balance is tight and there is very limited health making for extreme challenge on harder skills. You must save often, or you will have some lead inside your head. I remember how much this wad frustrated me when it first came out but you need to keep on trying to succeed. A great classic map set.

Every modern mapper should play this episode to learn a thing or two. This WAD is legendary, especially considering that it came out in '99. The detail & texturing combined with the spooky lighting creates a fantastic Gothic theme. The game play consists of many traps, keeping you on your toes the whole time - and the ammo is perfectly balanced. The only minor quibble I have is the lack of secrets in some maps, but Crusades still deserves no less than 5 stars.

Simply amazing- a classic, no doubt. As mentioned before, this is truly an overlooked masterpeice. The architecture and Gothic look to the maps was superb, along with the item placement. The quality of this even surpasses a lot of the work being produced today. Definitely one of the best map sets around; this deserves nothing less than *****. -Tango

This was pretty fun. I liked it. Tough mapset, but the level design was pretty top-notch. I liked the new textures too.

One of the best wads ever, my only complaints was there was a few relatively minor texture errors and the end was incredibly lame. Nevertheless, ***** -sargebaldy

Really very very good indeed. I would never have guessed this was from 1999. There's a nice mixture of gameplay styles and a gothic design theme that is still plundered nowadays. The new sounds are decent, and I liked the punchier shotgun noise. The secret level was good as well.

Simply great. Another damn fine set of levels from Wiles, whose stuff I've enjoyed ever since I played some of these levels long ago when they were still spookies. Great final battle, too.

This is in my opinion an overlooked classic in it's purest form. I don't think I've ever played such an amazing doom1 levelset. The beautifull gothic look of the levels, the minucious detailing, tight ammo, cramped space, and very hard challenge are the main things you'll remember after playing this. One of my favorite levelsets and for me just as classic as memento mori or hell revealed.

I played through this over the course of a week, in conjunction with Brutal Doom 1.9 (load brutal19.pk3 BEFORE crusades.wad) on Zandronum OpenGL with textures upscaled to HQ4X. I think that made this 15-year old mod look its best. I liked the new sound for the pistol/rifle, didn't notice the others (prolly 'cause of Brutal). There are some very tough challenges (played on default skill 3) and health seemed very sparse in some areas, so save often! - MN

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.

What the actual f*ck is this map. I love having 4 rockets, a shit ton of bullets and like 10 shotgun shells to take out a revenant, and whatever was in that cage. Doesn't look too bad, maybe this negativity is cus im no expert, also rather unskilled at the game?
