About This File

After you entered the core of the volcano in Fiery Descent, you found yourself in the middle of a smoldering crater on the other side. This map picks up where that one left off, as you journey deeper into it, discovering an ancient fortress built into the side of the lava mountain.

I was heavily inspired by the designs of Gothic DM when I built the fortress areas of the map.. and because of that came very close to Heretic's limit on lines displayed. I also brushed up against the savegame buffer limit (as I did with Water City), and so that's why the area around the blue key seems small. If I made the map larger like I was planning on doing, then you wouldn't be able to save. Not worth it..

This level has been designed to be extremely difficult, so only Heretic masters need apply. There is just enough ammo to get through things, but don't count on not ever having to fall back on weaker weapons. Also, use those Time Bombs! I didn't put a dozen of them in the map for nothing!

Excellent work ! I wonder how that map would be big and detailed without vanilla Heretic limitations, heh. 5/5 of course. ~Naan

A more than worthy sequel to "Fiery Descent." It's bigger and tougher, although the ammo isn't quite as tight as the author states--I had 150+ hellstaff charges at the end (playing on "smite-meister"). Anyway, the terrain is varied but does an excellent job of sticking to the theme, and the same can be said of the fights. Like its predecessor, it's still generally cramped, but there is in general more room to run than before. --TDotW

Excellent map, but the ammo is scarce, is the unique problem, another i dont see   the final boss!!!, i love it, the theme and he himself make me create some years ago a powerful boss, the dark lord of my wad of monsters   is great, but hard   4 stars

What a shame. The atmosphere and visuals of this wad are very well-done and are perfect for me, a big fan of the game Blood. But unfortunately the actual gameplay is a huge letdown. It's just not fun. You're given so little ammo that even if you begin with perfect aim, you'll undoubtedly run out and be faced with hitscan cultists and zero ammo. So you need to use the pitchfork on the poisonous enemies in the beginning (unfun) to have a chance against the cultists later on. This sums up the entirety of the mod's progression. You need to take EXACTLY the right path and make EXACTLY the right moves or you will be fucked. Which is really stupid since the city is so non-linear. It's punishing players for exploring. Just started exploring the city and feel like checking out this warehouse? Nope, here's two mini-bosses you couldn't possibly defeat at this point! How fun. And also due to this non-linearity, one is liable to get lost, trying to find the way to progress or remember exactly where to backtrack to.   Some would say "it's supposed to be ammo-starved & punishing like Blood". Well really only the first few levels of Blood are ammo-starved, for most of the game you are given a reasonable amount of ammunition. Which is good, because running past enemies like a headless chicken or making painstaking effort to melee them is not fun.

The Good:   - Mapsets were awesome. Non linear. Larger than medium sized.   - "New" monsters were great!     - Loads of clever secrets - most of them rewarding   - Great monster placement   - Lots of shooting, some good puzzles   - There's a Titan II   The Bad: -  Maps 08 and 09 were a bit slaughtery, but nothing extremely outrageous. -  Music could have been updated   I didn't think I would like this WAD at first, but it turned out that I really did have fun with it. It was a little slow getting started, but after the first 2 Maps, this game took off like a bullet! I wished it was longer, but hey, there's Titan II which, according to the reviews I've read, is even better!   Great job! Thanks for making this great WAD. :)   4.5 out of 5 Stars
