About This File

Consider this a tribute to the original Doom's E2M2. I always liked that level for some unexplainable reason, and thus felt it neccessary to emulate the style in this map. Even if you disliked that map I trust you'll have different feelings about this one!

All six keys are present in this map, so remember that red card and red skull AREN'T the same. :)

Resources from the Doom betas, Doom64 and Quake2 have been used in this map, as well as some original sounds/graphics by me.

this is a big ol' exploration map heavily inspired by e2m2, the doom 1 map of the same name. this map takes the concept of the crate maze and not only runs with it but improves heavily upon its inspiration; this map is bigger, harder, and more fun than the original in just about every way. it doesn't use doom 2's bestiary to its full potential - the arachnotron and pain elemental are nowhere to be found - but what it does use it uses well (though i do feel like the mancubus is a bit over represented in this). despite that, it's still fairly easy, with the hardest bit likely being the very start of the map when you have nothing but a shotgun and have to deal with dozens upon dozens of hellspawn, as well as the various encounters with the cyberdemon.

while it is large and it is comprised primarily of crate mazes, it's actually pretty easy to navigate your way around the map. it's divided into several distinct areas, all of which have landmarks to help the player know where exactly they are. i will say, however, that having almost nothing but crates does make the map feel a bit samey after a while, which for a map of this size isn't ideal.

overall, if you're big into exploration and aren't super concerned about not being challenged to an extreme degree, then there's no reason not to check this out. it's fun, rewarding, and while the looks can be a bit monotonous the gameplay is varied enough to keep things interesting.

A decent tribute map with a good pace and combat constant.  But it started to feel pretty samey after a while, with neverending crates and mostly flat lighting throughout.  And I would appreciate bigger weapons if it's going to be Mancubus -> Mancubus -> Mancubus -> Archvile the entire time.  It takes way too long to kill them with a shotgun and it isn't challenging enough to justify that.  That one crusher spot was also complete bullshit; there's a small pit with corpses to warn you of it, but if you look down from the ledge above to see it, the ceiling will instantly trap you and drain all your health.

A very cool E2M2 remake, recognizable in its tribute and yet adding so much more to the original map. It is quite sprawling, and finding your way can be tricky at times, but it's never needlessly confusing. The fights are fun but not very hard, apart from the occasional troublesome cyberdemon.

What an absolute classic. There are so many crates and quite repetitive design and yet, it isn't in the least bit boring. Thanks to finely crafted gameplay, monsters, ammo, and secrets placement. Why did I wait this long before playing this? 5 stars.

666 monsters lol. probably the best tribute wad out there and it's got crates. tons of them too, with good combat throughout. it's a boom wad, so there's some things you should look out for more than crates, as we got different key doors and conveyors. combat is stagnant and steady, look out for the occasional cyberdemon. my only complaint would be that one conveyor hallway with the switches that close it off completely, since instinct always tells you to hit a switch when you first see it. but otherwise, this is one of the few maps where it's fun to get lost in and get secrets.

Large mostly single-themed level. Good map layout, good ambiance, and solid but not to difficult fights. Maybe a bit too long, and imo the cybies @ UV absolutely do not fit, but E2M2 fans presumably will love this one. Overall: solid 4*. BTW @ ^: Flying monster and a Vulcan Cannon??? Have you reviewed a different level?

This is one of my all-time favorite levels! I love the original E2M2, and parts of this map are real bliss! The detail and lighting are excellent, and the music fits the level perfectly. It's a little too big and non-linear, but overall a must download. 5 stars.

Epic map. Over 500 monsters and very intense fights. I liked it. Especially the flying weird-ass monster at end that dropped a cool weapon called "Vulcan Cannon" when I killed him. I played with AEOD 5.29.1. I will give 5/5. -Doomer95

This is dated February 2000. Since playing and reviewing it for the first time I have plowed through Hell Revealed and Alien Vendetta, so the difficulty level now seems very mild. It's essentially several crate mazes with extra bits. The design is on the cusp of the modern era, with a couple of nice touches, but feels very dated. Gets an extra star for having 666 monsters, minus a star for not quite having enough gameplay to justify them all.

A seriously kick-ass level. Too bad GZDoom didn't exist when this was made, or the crates would have been even better. Nice detail, and some awesome battles. Five out of five screaming martians for you. --Illogically.Inclin ed

Four. Extremely, irritatingly hard; it's the kind of level where you pick up a key and BAM, a hundred monsters come out of a nearby wall plus a cyberdemon. Very little ammo and health... but ultimately I played it through to the end just because of the enormous challenge of the thing. Clever use of motifs from the original level.

Great level, very good E2 style, except even more atmospheric than the original. My only complaint is that it's for Doom II. ***** -sargebaldy

People seem to love the cratewars. I do, too. As usual, the start is a little shaky, but once you get a foothold, everything gets better. Mayhem and chaos alone (but it was well detailed, too) earn it 5 out of 5. --prdarkfox

Really good puzzle map in a big dark metal/stone building. It catches the atmosphere of Bob Evans' Eternal Doom stuff, and I think there are even some homages to some other Eternal Doom maps as well (for example, the big two-layered outdoor area looks a bit like the "amusement park" in MAP26).   In my experience the puzzles were a bit easier than in "Silures" or "Excalibur", but it's possible that having played a lot of puzzle map stuff since I played Eternal Doom, having played through the whole canon of Bob Evans and Jim Flynn, and liking to search for Doom secrets in every map has made me recognize certain tropes better. The puzzles I liked most were (the spoilers only give minor hints):
Gameplay is good too, at the start ammo is scarce so the chainsaw and berserk are your friend, and midtiers say hello from the start on, but hitscanners are the biggest threat. Rockets should be saved for archviles until you find the first larger cache.   9,5/10

Fun, challenging set of maps that looks much better than you might expect for the time it was made. These maps will still slap you around a bit on HMP if you're not staying sharp. The author is fond of Chaingunner ambushes which keep you on your toes. I didn't find the SSG until around MAP05, which was cool, I like when its not given out too early. Pistol-starting the last two maps is pretty tough, but doable.   The map designs do a really good job of letting the player see crucial areas from different angles through progression and the layouts are really tidy overall, and feel a bit more modern than a lot of other 94/95 maps I've played. There are some really nice large-scale vistas (like the start of MAP06), nice uses of verticality and a good mixture of tight and more open combat.   Recommended!

Spectacular visuals and engaging combat make this an absolute must play. There's a puzzle with a "Shoot the thing" answer that kind of comes out of left field and can be an easy place to get stuck if you're not on your toes, but that hardly stops the map from being a thrilling masterpiece.

E3M9's refrain of back-tracking to a church for keys is a little tedious, and there are a few moments where things can become a frustrating key/switch hunt as you figure out what to do next, but aside from that, this an intense and rewarding adventure with beautiful lighting and architecture.
