About This File

3-level set with a medieval theme, using Hexen2 textures, new sprites, and a beautiful new sky. The architecture is quite detailed, and the texture alignment is near perfect (can you say "huge pain in the ass and a major buttload of work"?)

Map_01 -- Ramparts Entry-level type map, where you explore the outer walls of a medieval castle and figure out a way to gain entry.

Map_02 -- The Keep Start in the outer courtyard, explore the tradesman's compound and the fountains before venturing deeper into the castle. Marvel at the quiet beauty of the chapel and the desolation of the cemetary, before storming the inner courtyard and the keep. Tarry awhile in the great hall and the throne room and then spend a moment in silent reflection at the pavilion. Next, curl up to a good book in the library and when you tire of that, find your way into the bedchamber. Finally, the crypt awaits.

Map_03 -- The Crypt Are you afraid of the dark? Is the Boogie Man not one of your favorite people? Do you wish you'd saved that last bullet for your- self, instead of frantically pumping it into the rock-hard skull of that damned baron? Then this level is not for you. If, however, you like creepy places (who doesn't?) and can ration your ammo then by all means venture forth!

Level two is the standout, it's a good-looking, expansive castle. The gameplay is so-so but it looks wonderful. Level one is decent, but I didn't like the platform jumping, and it's very gloomy and hard to see anything. Level three is mostly a dark gloomy maze. In all three levels the Hexen textures look great and and it's professionally done. If you just play one level play the second one.

These levels are very boring. Nice looking and the second is the best but boring. 4/25/07

I love the architecture and use of textures in this mapset. The atmosphere is also quite good, making this work quite well. -WW

Nice use of H2 textures. Should have made it for ZDooM and used hubs.

Pretty good. The combat was fun and design wasn't bad at all.

Despite its age, nice details and well designed. Way how blue key is hidden is really clever. But map is dark and cramped. Enemies are only imps and hitscanners.

Pretty good map in E1 base style (except Doom2 monsters) Nice design but there some texture alignment issues.

Despite the browns and grays that are prominent in this megaWAD, I found it to be fun. I also found it to be quite the challenge. The first map gives you a taste of what to expect in terms of enemy encounters. The author makes good use of mid-tier enemies to apply pressure on the player. Monster count for most of the maps barely breaks the 150 mark but, as said before, the use of mostly mid-tier enemies puts pressure on the player. I also like how the megaWAD handles level progression. Most of the levels you go through consist of caves, cities, islands, and tech bases in space. In fact, there's only one real Hell-like level and even it's within the confines of the moon base you fight through in maps 21 - 30.   About the only gripes I have with this megaWAD are with regards to maps 32, 29, and 30. I know the text file and map 31 give warnings about map 32 but there really should be some kind of alternate exit in map 32 instead of trapping you in place if you don't pass one of the puzzles. I wasn't a fan of how close quarters the IoS fight was in map 29, especially since it can get cramped quickly with monster spawns. Finally, the randomization of what keys spawn during your escape in map 30 isn't fun either. 10 minutes seems like plenty of time but between navigating the vent system (again) without light goggles and dealing with mid-tier enemies, that 10 minutes can get eaten up really quick.   Overall, it's still a fun megaWAD. I'd recommend at least giving it a shot.
