Enjay Zdoom 2001

About This File

32 Levels replacing Doom2, basically following the Doom2 "story". A reworking of my old Enjay Doom project (originally from 1994 for some of the older levels). Therefore, the look is a little primative in places.

If this was the 2001 year I would rate this 5/5. But in 2022 this wad is nothing but a lame retro.

I got the feeling that this wad was trying to showcase the advanced Zdoom capabilities rather than trying to create a

good game play, and even with the advanced features the design still feels flat!

HMP or lower players will probably enjoy this as it is a below average difficulty with plenty of ammo/items.

I wanted to rate this 2.5/5 stars, but since half star cannot be selected I rated it 3 stars.

We really need to be able to select half a star in rating.

I had a blast with this one! There wasn't a single map I didn't enjoy as all the maps were well crafted, the fights were nice and there're some minor ZDOOM features added on the maps (like diving into the water among other things). The difficulty is easy to a experienced player but it's very fun. I recommended this wad to those that want a more relaxed gameplay.

to this day Enjay's Doom wads still hold up, despite being really old. Enjay Zdoom 2001 puts some ZDoom features into the old levels, but doesn't overdo it. it helps that the original maps themselves are fun, classic Doom action levels with no real drawbacks, the levels are medium-sized with decent progression. what the ZDoom set does use is colored lighting, ambient sound effects, particles, fog, but uses them sparingly and gives only a tad of atmosphere, and that's really all they need. there's a few new monsters like a gray imp and the rifle trooper which replaces the SS, but also doesn't overuse either of them. really, this one is easily replayable and still fun.

Kewl! Something to measure other WADs of the time by. Deserves more credit than it gets.

This is the full, final manifestation/versio n of what started out as a set of unusually good levels for 1994. It really should be a classic IMO and how these maps were NEVER mentioned in the Top 100 feature for Doom's 10th birthday, not once in their eight years of upgrading from 1994-2001, is beyond me.

It has really good gameplay, but it is quite easy. Some nice use of zdoom features. Lack of detail on other side. 3,5/5 would be right. - Damned

Could been better, the first part and all was kinda of boring after killing all the enemies, the ending itself was fantastic, so much adrenaline and a cool ending. Polish the begin a bit and put a bigger story into it.

^^A lot of them ARE polished 1994 maps, but far more than slightly! You can find the base to many of the levels in his non-ZDoom megawad either for Doom I or II. Not Enjay ZDoom (without the 2001), as that (excluding the secret levels) as that already had most of the 'polishing' done. A few of the 1994 levels were completely dumped for new levels in the conversion to from Enjay Doom II --> Enjay ZDoom, but sparing the secret levels the rough layouts from Enjay ZDoom and this are the same.

1994 superb. 2001 Okay. 2011 poor. Feels like slightly polished 1994 maps. 3/5

really good, i like the focus on imps and former humans instead of the "bigger" monsters most doom 2 wads do. the added monsters compliment the standard set very well unlike most wads also. One of the most fun wads ive played through 5/5

WHAT WAS THE MAKER FUCKING THINKING?!?!?!?!, This wad is a product of a infected diseased brain, why make a wad based on something cringe?, it is worse than Action 52 on the Nes or Hong Kong 97 on the Snes or EVEN BIG FUCKING RIGS ON THE PC! the enemy is not even scary it just happens to be a poorly drawn sprite, also he INSTANTLY KILLS YOU! the music is decent though i have to say it was a fuckin nightmare, If you play on skulltag level 2 will crash, since fuckin glitch gremlin wiped his ass on it, anyways FUCK this wad to Hell, get a infinity gauntlet and Snap it out of existence.

well, the concept is good  BUT...   WHAT THE FUCK EVEN IS THIS??

Definitely shows its age. It was a real grind to play through, mostly due to the levels being boring, but also from a remarkable over-reliance on hitscan, especially shotgunners. For some reason. The third episode does indeed pick up much of the slack, but with the really fun levels being shining exceptions rather than rule for two thirds of the WAD it still left me annoyed and exasperated in the end. The maps look fine most of the time and the music is good to really good, which is something to hold on to. I would still advice my past self to skip most of this one.

There's not too much for me to say about this one. While it isn't exactly my jam 100% of the time, I'm struggling to see how any creative endeavor could entertain me so thoroughly, throughout all the 32 parts of it. Ancient Aliens is charming, somewhat challenging, mysterious, well-paced... I could iterate over plenty of different variations of lavish praise, but I guess that in and of itself describes my feelings: AA is remarkably well-rounded. A DOOM blockbuster - and I use that description as an honest compliment rather than the pejorative it's sometimes thought of. One for the ages, and it'll be one of the WADs to which many of my future experience will be compared.

On second thought, this wad is kinda mid if you ask me. After playing through all of it on pistol-start I wasn't really blown away by it. The midi pack that was made for this in 2020 was very nice if you ask me, but why this wad ever deserves a midi pack when it's so bland is what makes me scratch my head. Idk man, I didn't like this one as much as others do :/.
