About This File

This is a compilation of the WADs entered in NiGHTMARE's third speedmapping exercise. Participants were given 100 minutes to create a Doom 2 level on a certain theme. This week's theme was to design a tribute to (not a remake of) participants' favourite level in either Doom 1 (excluding episode 1 (although someone broke this rule), e2m8 and e3m8) or Doom 2 (excluding map01, map07, map30, map31 and map32).

I liked the mapless crate maze until I discovered I needed SIX KEYS to reach the exit. Half that, and half the map, and it'd be fun. Map02 is small but true to its' parent. Map03 has an insane amount of monsters, very difficult. Map04 is just the original with poor detail, and a stupid 1994-style surprise at the end. Map05 is quite enjoyable, best of a bad bunch. I like the concept of Map06 but it's way too easy. 2/5 for this lot.

Level one is a tribute to the crate maze in E2M2; but it's literally a giant crate maze (with the automap turned off!) with gameplay no more advanced than 3D Monster Maze on the ZX81. What am I supposed to do, map it on grid paper? Level two is much better, it's like a decent (but very small) 1994 level. Level three is the best, it's manic; level four isn't bad, level five is competent but dull, level six is a novelty.

Insanity, with voodoo dolls (see second screenshot).  I get the idea of a shooting gallery if that rocks your boat, but 6000 monsters behind railings- as far as the eye can see, FFS! My PC crawled when I looked towards the invuln spheres (someone said 32 k of them and you can't avoid picking up thousands at a time). In the end I cheated with god mode and no-clipping, and waded in among the chaingunners until I got bored.

Simple, clearly a first wad.  All on the flat with big, brightly lit, and architecturally implausible rooms. The first map has two rooms, the second map one, and the third map one plus a kind of exit lobby. You can do one of two things - just run past the monsters and finish (I did it in 35 seconds), or have a bit of fun killing the monsters first. No noticable bugs. I hope the author will go on (or went on) to greater things.

Absolutely ludicrous, Now I need a new keyboard. Technically as bad as a wad can be, surely deliberate. I like to check out low-rated wads, so it's a pity that some clowns gave this  (and other bad ones) 5 stars, because averaged with correct low scores they end up with a middling rating and can be missed.
