About This File

THE STORY SO FAR :

You are currently stationed at UAC's proving grounds, where experimental weapons, chemical, and vehicles are tested before being sold to the military. You don't like this post, but who said you have to.

You have a bad feeling about the big hush-hush project being tested today. It's called the High Energy Tranfer system, or H.E.X. for short. The H.E.X. breaks an object down in to sub-atomic particles, sends them to another location, where they are them reassembled in perfect order. At least thats the goal.

As the hour for the first human test approaches, you recall the rumors that you heard about the success and failures of the animal tests. Some of them just weren't pretty. The only thing you can do is feel sorry for the poor slob that has to step in to that lab.

The test begins. You can hear the hum of the huge generators that power the H.E.X. A funny feeling comes over you, like the one you had when your squad was ambushed three years ago. The lab alarm goeas off and you know it's bad. Grab your shotgun and rush towards the lab complex. Thats when the monsters start to appear.

You and your comrades are taken aback by the green flashes of energy and the monsters that appear in their wake. Some hurl balls of fire, others just gorge themselves on human flesh. You are being overwhelmed. Your freinds fall around you. You lose your shotgun to a fireball.

The lab is near. You don't have much of a choice. You look back at the carnage when you reach the door. You watch in horror as the dead that aren't being eaten rise and start taking shots at you. The corpse of your best friend shambles toward you. You take him out, then enter the complex.

"I'm the last one," you think as the door closes and locks behind you. All is earily quiet. Maybe you can find a better weapon in here. Maybe there are survivors. maybe, just maybe, you can fire up the H.E.X. and use it to ge out of this hell-hole. You just have to get to it first and hope it doesn't reduce you to a pile of gibs.

Atmospheric "my office" kind of level with moody lighting and creepy music (from Doom2 map30). Pretty cool, my only gripe is that all secrets are the same, plus sometimes monsters open them for you.

May 2002. The first thing you see when you start the level are some wonky textures. It's a kind of sci-fi office map with lots of square corridors and tiny rooms. The gameplay is formulaic, e.g. the keys are usually located in the next room along from the doors they open. 55 mostly weak monsters, ending with a ferocious hellish onslaught consisting of a single cacodemon and a hell knight. It fails the toilet test as well.

Really good puzzle map in a big dark metal/stone building. It catches the atmosphere of Bob Evans' Eternal Doom stuff, and I think there are even some homages to some other Eternal Doom maps as well (for example, the big two-layered outdoor area looks a bit like the "amusement park" in MAP26).   In my experience the puzzles were a bit easier than in "Silures" or "Excalibur", but it's possible that having played a lot of puzzle map stuff since I played Eternal Doom, having played through the whole canon of Bob Evans and Jim Flynn, and liking to search for Doom secrets in every map has made me recognize certain tropes better. The puzzles I liked most were (the spoilers only gives minor hints):
Gameplay is good too, at the start ammo is scarce so the chainsaw and berserk are your friend, and midtiers say hello from the start on, but hitscanners are the biggest threat. Rockets should be saved for archviles until you find the first larger cache.   9,5/10

Fun, challenging set of maps that looks much better than you might expect for the time it was made. These maps will still slap you around a bit on HMP if you're not staying sharp. The author is fond of Chaingunner ambushes which keep you on your toes. I didn't find the SSG until around MAP05, which was cool, I like when its not given out too early. Pistol-starting the last two maps is pretty tough, but doable.   The map designs do a really good job of letting the player see crucial areas from different angles through progression and the layouts are really tidy overall, and feel a bit more modern than a lot of other 94/95 maps I've played. There are some really nice large-scale vistas (like the start of MAP06), nice uses of verticality and a good mixture of tight and more open combat.   Recommended!

Spectacular visuals and engaging combat make this an absolute must play. There's a puzzle with a "Shoot the thing" answer that kind of comes out of left field and can be an easy place to get stuck if you're not on your toes, but that hardly stops the map from being a thrilling masterpiece.

E3M9's refrain of back-tracking to a church for keys is a little tedious, and there are a few moments where things can become a frustrating key/switch hunt as you figure out what to do next, but aside from that, this an intense and rewarding adventure with beautiful lighting and architecture.
