About This File

7 dark, nightmare1 texture bases. This is a fixed version of the old dark7. Fix includes: Better texture alignment, fixed map01 glitch were you can't jump out of the water near the cargo loading area, removed the double mod07 lumps, and various other fixes.

Nice and short maps with a quake-ish switches game mechanic. I was surprised how not many mappers and mod developers are using such features in their wads nowadays, to oppose old and annoying key-door mechanics, since the GZDoom engine supports that. Levels itself feels a bit empty though. Maybe it was some map format restrictions, but those corridors cry for more detail.

Here's a playthrough video of it:

This WAD hasn't really aged well. The gameplay isn't particularly interesting and the levels rely too much on over-using ZDoom features. The new sound effects are annoying, and the announcer's endless chatter on map04 gets downright infuriating. The ending levels are disappointing, especially the final battle which can be over in seconds. That said, the detailing looks nice in some levels.

Very nice-looking wad with liberal but not gaudy use of ZDoom features. The level design is overall solid, although there are a couple annoyances (like having to battle mancubi while sliding around on ice). The 2 boss levels are unfortunately extremely underwhelming & easy, really not worth playing. But the first 5 levels are quite cool.

Some super good maps, a lot of boring/bad maps and some with not even close to enough ammo. Train map was my favorite.

Fantastical for 2002. The levels are fun and very detailed (again, for 2002), although they can get kind of confusing because of using mostly the same textures for the entire level. The problems are annoying sounds (they do NOT fit >_

Dark7 - has bright icy levels. lol. really just call it Ice7 given the theme, which contradicts the whole "dark" aspect this one provides. Gunrock's maps, which include this, the mission pack which is separate, as well as Southern Cross, Dissolution, and Project Slipgate, all have basically the same ideals, all ZDoom wads with Quake-style orientation. in other words, they are linear, give mission objectives to complete, and then afterwards you can exit areas. the gameplay is designed to be as steady as possible, giving workable battles to prod through without feeling too unfair. Dark7 is perhaps the most notable of these, but the others are far better in all honesty. this one does have quite a few memorable moments, including a relatively lackluster train level sandwiched between mostly good ones, and then two back-to-back boss levels that aren't honestly as exciting at all (the latter one is pretty stupid too). you'll find better work from bryant robinson in his other wads, but this still has some replayability to it due to it being relatively short for a set.

Good for brutal doom. Swimming under water and super desigh of levels shocked me. But one moment - so few enemies in levels. Playing on max difficult i want feel real challenges. I haven't.

What most people don't realize about this wad is the INSANE amount of detail that is in every corner. If you open it up in doom builder or just look all around every room, there are such original lighting ideas and doodads that really make this wad feel authentic. It puts every other custom wad in existence (except the dishonorable gothic99) to utter shame in terms of detail. Ps: it's better than the mission pack which is still a 5/5.

I enjoy Bryant's levels. They have great gameplay and an aesthetic design. Dark is no exception. If only the interiors were less repetive I'd give them 5 stars. But because some of the ideas are quite innovative fe the train map Dark 7 deserves and additional star. 5 stars then. -Nmn

The last reviewer said: "most of the scenes layout is quite rectangular and too often simple, lots of empty rooms/areas. Texture variation is small." ...Did you play the same Dark7 I did? The detail in every room is simply amazing and the texture work is done quite well. I suggest you redownload Dark7: The Special Edition

Quite awesome. It was great for the most part, though as already mentioned, sometimes seemed a little bit repetitive. The train map was great, along with some of the other ZDoom effects used. 4/5 -Tango

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
