Rheingold is often considered to be the best of the Wolfendoom wads, with dehacked work not being as heavy as Arctic Wolf but fairly decent enough to make a worthwhile adventure. the biggest problem with the two Rheingold wads is that there's supposed to be more than these two, but were never made. therefore, all we players get are some 3-level maps, done with much signature style, in this case, we get the Hotel of Death, with the 3 levels centering around a hotel that Blaskowicz apparently decided to stay in for whatever reason.

again, if the gameplay were not as harrowing as it is, this would've gotten a better score. but as you can tell, again, we fight off souped-up Gestapo (SS) for both the first two maps, some in long hallways and some in larger rooms. playing hide and seek with high-health hitscanners isn't as fun as it should seem. the fire extinguishers only help if they're right next to the enemies. there's also this interesting cook enemy on the first level. the game does try something interesting, making the Kar98k show up for once as a chaingun replacement, it fires a lot slower but stronger and there are riflemen in the levels that have this.

what saves this from a lower rating though is pretty much the entirety of the last level. I like it a lot, sure the hitscanners are there, but there's also grenade throwers which are cool, plus the several tanks. I notice that when you reach the final colonel, the level abruptly ends with the story taking over, but it's still possible to shoot this guy and reveal he has baron of hell frames, which are problematic. still, this is definitely the best level in this set, and overall, due to the fact that it's just three maps, I enjoyed what I could here, when I wasn't getting overchewed by the hitscanners that is.

I really enjoy the wolfendoom wads, but I still feel like I'm playing doom, not Wolfenstein 3D...

Looks pretty impressive, but I don't think I could stand playing the game the whole way through with the Nazis (apparently) shouting "nig-ger!" whenever they die.

Excellent level design from a visual standpoint. For that matter, it all looks really good. The lack of new music is kind of a disappointment, but it's not too bad. The premise would lead you to believe it would be more spy-like, possibly involving sneaking around, but no. You basically face a horde of enemies and shoot them. Getting to the next level involves finding keys and opening locked doors, which isn't bad per se but rather uninspired. Good design, bad gameplay.

Works with "prboom -file rhein1.wad -deh rhein1.deh -warp 4", and it looks nice but pretty hard finding where to go. Most doors don't open (locked?) and there isn't a lot of stimpacks, just tons of nazis shooting at you.

Good but flawed, most ports won't run this.

It works just fine. If you fools can't figure it out don't bother. If some ports don't work it is because those ports are useless and crappy. Get Zdoom to run this. And it is very beautiful. This doesn't play like Doom. This plays like a version of Wolfenstein that's a tad bit more modern.

Works perfectly in ZDoom - and it's a very beautiful piece, too. Laz, I sure hope you're gonna do the remaining episodes of Rheingold some time! ;)

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.

What the actual f*ck is this map. I love having 4 rockets, a shit ton of bullets and like 10 shotgun shells to take out a revenant, and whatever was in that cage. Doesn't look too bad, maybe this negativity is cus im no expert, also rather unskilled at the game?

thank god Underhalls was the map that followed this mod as that level was able to remind me what actually competent level design looks like.

Not that bad, even kind of interesting find the secrets in the map! But yeah, that switches jungle is a awful choice really.
