About This File

This was my first wad, designed six months ago. It is not a huge level; I intended it to be map 1 of a full episode, but I haven't had the free time to finish (what with DOOM2, Descent, RotT, Dark Forces, Heretic, and Magic Carpet :)). It is, IMHO, a very detailed and nice looking WAD, though. It's also pretty hard in UV mode (let alone in Nightmare).

What it lacks in super challenge and space, it makes up for in creativeness. The fireplace and the upstairs rooms where a great touch. It's apparent that this was supposed to be map 1 of a set of maps with the way it ends, but unfortunately it doesn't look like Jason did another Doom map.

One of those wads from ten years ago which has a readme in which the author promise a full episode shortly, although this is Jason Scanlin's only map in the Doomworld archives. The file is actually dated 28 September 1994. Amazingly, it is pretty damn good, although much too short. There's some clever architecture (an overhanging crate, some lighting) and although there's not much of it its much better than most wads from a year later.

      Disregard earlier review server error caused me to download the incorrect file. So what do I like? The textures combined with the sharp lighting contrast between heavy dark and rather bright areas. What I don't like is the rather empty feeling level with large rooms and corridors filled with medium tier enemies on Ultra Violence, i.e cacodemons and hellknights, while only given a shotgun and chaingun. The issue with this is that encounters become more tedious than dangerous. I would add a super shotgun or spread out the medium tier enemy placement. The level detailing leaves a lot to be desired with the large empty grey rooms/corridors reminding me more of Half-Life than Doom. With some more detailing and better monster/weapon placement I would rank this higher but as it stands this level leaves a lot to be desired.

      the map looks good visually but what does the have to do with doom 64? and how do I kill an archvile with a pistol? and a cyberdemon with a chain gun?
