About This File

The ZanZan TC was missing from the /idgames archive, which I felt was something of a crime (why it was never uploaded I don't know) since it's such a great TC. For more info on the TC read the file ZanReadme.txt in the zip.

This pack includes ZDoomGL 0.66 because that's the version of ZDoomGL needed to run the TC since it has MD2 support. The current version of ZDoomGL (coded by timmie) is more stable, but supports less features. You can actually play this TC with that version (but you need to move the player1 start in map01) but it will look silly without the MD2s.

To play this just simply unzip to your Doom directory WITH folders (it will unzip to a folder called 'zanpack') enabled. Now, the archive includes a few batch files for Voodoo 2 and 3. If you have one of those you can try using them, but your best bet is to just run zan.wad from the command line, and ZDoomGL will do the rest. Read ZanReadme.txt first though, as it will tell you the options you'll need enabled to play the TC properly.

If you have any questions about running the TC the feel free to contact me.

Excellent TC. If the ZdoomGL version is too difficult to run on modern machines, there is a gzdoom version at https://www.doomworl d.com/idgames/levels /doom2/Ports/v-z/zan zan_g. The comic from the TC's website is worth reading before you start as well. Does a nice job of setting up the plot for the game.

ZanZan is absolutely legendary... however a royal pain to get working. Download the GZDoom version here, http://www.doomworld .com/idgames/index.p hp?id=14574 for a much better, working version. -Scuba

over-rated. Lots of graphics lags, but RTC-3057 is a bit better. ~0/5

A fantastically well done TC. The gameplay is not quite up to the same standard though.

(if fog effects appear too dense, use g_fglfog 0.3 command to fix it)

Weird, completely different, but entirely captivating, ZanZan takes the old Doom formula and swaps it all out for a very unique fantasy-style WAD. It's totally bizarre, but that's why it's fun to play. The music, weapons, level design, structures, story, and even some of the monsters are totally un-Doom like, but it's all so haunting beautiful and intriguing that you really don't mind. Definitely worth playing!

Umm... this isnt Doom 64? Or even remotely related to it?   In addition, its a shitty wad. You are expected to fight 2 arch-viles with a pistol, and then a cyberdemon witha  chaingun in an enclosed space.

Should have been called "Doom 64 for Boom".   I really wanted to like this more. I mean, I do like it but I feel like the gripes I have regarding it just bring my overall rating for it down too much.   It was interesting to see how, at first, the authors recreated the Doom 64 levels in Doom 2 with just vanilla assets. You can still see some of that in the Boom levels like how revenants and arch-viles are used in place of where traps where. That was an interesting touch and I liked that.   As I got further into it though and more of the Boom tricks were used my thoughts wandered from "hey this is a nice vanilla interpretation" to "man I could be playing Doom 64 EX or Doom 64 Retribution". I really wish they would have stuck with vanilla constraints for this reinterpretation. I would have liked to see how they would have handed nightmare monster placement (would a nightmare imp be worth two imps or three, for example). I feel like using Boom and DeHacked cheapened the experience, like they were trying to replicate Doom 64 as close as possible rather than doing a vanilla Doom (2) interpretation.   Additionally, map 30 can fuck right the hell off with that puzzle bullshit.   Anyway, if you don't mind any of the complaints I made, you'll likely have fun with this. I got some fun out of this as well but to me it feels like it's trying to be exactly like Doom 64 rather than simply a vanilla Doom 2 interpretation of Doom 64. In trying to be exactly like Doom 64, it just makes me want to play that more than this.

Pretty good. The combat was fun and design wasn't bad at all.

Despite its age, nice details and well designed. Way how blue key is hidden is really clever. But map is dark and cramped. Enemies are only imps and hitscanners.

the more I play the more I get more sad that this map pack is going to end soon its really great :)
