What happens when you morph E4 style maps with E4M2 difficulty + D2 monsters and piss on the original HR which was hard but actually fun? You get HR2, it's overly angsty sequel (for all we know it could be a prequel ala DMC3) that went from challenge the player to just "kill the player on sight". I played UV on the original but I enjoyed it. I consider myself a Doom masochist; HR2 actually hurts.

oh Hell Revealed II, you are one of my more replayed wads, but even as replayable as you are, you're still not one of my favorites.

my opinion on the two Hell Revealed has changed a bit, and I think the sequel does improve in making some pretty decent levels. while there's less ideas and the detail is often still crap (bar MAP25, which seems to be the only one with some custom textures), this is outweighed by some more interesting combat scenarios as well as some excellent music tracks, the metal-sounding midis work well with some of the tougher outings. you can tell some of the authors went quite over the line with layouts, MAP19 is the biggest example of this, with a five-tier central area with four 3D bridges, of course there's more to 3D bridges as other levels like MAP24 use them (although that one doesn't do it well). aside from the 3D stuff, there's gonna be some interesting homages whether to the first Hell Revealed or otherwise, like Dis 2000, the aforementioned MAP24 which is the Inmost Dens III, Not That Simple II, The Path II, The Descent II, Hardcore (a Dead Progressive-type level), Siege II, and Resistance Remains.

gameplay of course is hard. believe it or not, the worst enemies in all of Hell Revealed II are actually the hitscanners, expect chaingunners in some real problem spots, or just about everywhere, and that includes ITYTD too. it's a rough ride all the way through the latter levels because of these things. chaingunners are real blatant in some levels, like MAP22 with its backtracking and its liberal chaingunner usage, which is even MORE liberal on a later map, MAP29. advice: keep watching your back at the last stretches of MAP29 for the chaingunner teleporter ambushes. that's just one example of a marathon level, so try to push through as much as you can there.

in a way, the difficulty is what makes this enjoyable, although some maps are much less forgiving and more tedious than anything. early maps like MAP04 and MAP05 are badly cramped. MAP12 is an easy standout for its huge wide open closets and some teleporting enemies, worst of which are the archies. MAP24 is extremely tedious due to its 3D bridge usage along with some annoying monster placement. MAP28 is another example of tedium with somewhat bad monster placement, although really it's the hunt for the switches in the map that makes it bad. these examples are of course offset by the nicer homage levels and the open slaughter/marathon ones that are actually decent.

to think that despite my overall opinion on HR2 not changing, I still use it as a nice testing wad for other mods and such shows just how skilled I am at things. it's got some crazy levels alright, just watch the hitscanners and where you are.

Phew!Just finished playing. It's official:among the more famous megawads this is THE most violent.Counting 10612 monsters on UV(342,32258 per map)it surpases Alien Vendetta(counting 10402).Map 32 stops at 1651 monsters. For comparison doom1 episode 1 counts 926(9 maps!!!),while original HR has 6891 monsters. And I didn't count in generated lost souls and Arch-Vile revevings(which are used commonly).I like challenge, butI must say this a bit over the top for me.Still good designs so 4/5.Best maps:15,21,25.

Pssssshhhhh the gameplay is awesome, it seems some people need to brush up on their SP skills before diving into HR2. It's meant to be hard as hell.

Meh... After finishing it, all I could say is it pales when pitted against AV, Scythe 2 or even Kama Sutra. It's challenging alright, but the design was trully nothing special. In later maps it just becomes a tiresome Bfg-rocket-Ssg grind, I love big battles, but this is, well, it's just a little dissapointing, especially for having way too many HR references in both design and level names, there's just nothing that would make me play it again, so I'll give it a 3. -TeH NeXuS

Almost as good as the original HR - just a bit less focused.

I prefer this this to hell revealed 1, map 19 is incredible and overall design is better IMO. 5/5

The difficulty mainly consists of monster spam in rooms too small to allow proper movement to deal with the almost always overpowered monsters for the area. I honestly believe that this is a terribly half-assed method of artificially making a mapset more difficult than it truly needs to be in a way that is absolutely unnecessary, and this one abuses that even worse than the previous HR. 1/5 simply because the designers weren't even trying to make a fun wad, just the hardest one they could think of.

Not too bad, except the first few levels aren't really special and a bit formulaic.

To be fair, I liked the original more. Something about he original has been lost in HR2. Although an excellent megawad when considered on its own merits alone, HR2 just doesn't measure up to the first Hell Revealed.

Possibly the weirdest mapset I've played with. It's got strange levels, strange music etc. and in style it's quite different from the first HR, although I'd might say this one is actually better. VERY hard, but that's the esence of the HR-series. A classic, this is the best wad of 2003 along with Scythe. 5/5

Not the best Megawad in the world, but still brought me hours of fun. It's just that it kinda gets boring after a little while. HR 1 is a lot better. 3.5/5 - KalebNoobMaster

Damn beautiful!! After like 2 weeks of playing and 1 hour with the hard maps i can say this pack rocks. Wich is best? mm dunno hr or hr2. both are extreme challenging very funny maps. Is not just killing things, is the monster placement the puzzles the nasty situations and lot of stuff. ck

I'm sorry, but most of time I have no ammo and i had to killing cyberdemons with shotgun all hours. It's boring! And the archviles in each maps, it sucks! It's really exaggerated! And killing a thousand revenants with chainsaw, it not difficult, its just stupid!
