About This File

GROVE- THE STORY CONTINUES (...from where?)- In your garden, you can sometimes see an angry looking fat dude steal your mushrooms. He's Smugla. Whenever he takes them, he leaps into a deep hole in the floor like a rabbit. You've never catched him. One day you think "Gee- I wonder why he lives in the ground?" So one day, taking your pistol to blow that mushroom stealer to bits, you jump down the hole. "Lets see how he enjoys my mushrooms now!"... Whatever that means. You hit the bottom of the hole, and you see the hole continue horizontally down. So you go down it, and hit a dead end. But then, you look up, and see another hole out "ha HA!" you retort. You climb out the hole, and look around- "Umm... where the hell am I?" You say, as you see the red skied, gold stared, tree covered, 7 frame per second frame rate world of Grove. You get out of the hole, and see Smugla's house infront of you, with HIS mushroom garden, which are really your mushrooms that he stole. You might as well take them. They are yours- even if it would anger him. Where is he anyway?

There is a map in his house, showing his X on it. Hmm. I wonder why he wants to go there? Well, he IS a trans-galactical mushroom stealer - maybe its a huge mushroom grove? or maybe an opportunity to get other mushrooms from other dimensions? Who knows. Do you? You do don't you- don't lie. Tell me- TELL ME!!

END OF STUPID STORY

P.S- Sorry about all those trees. Its a relatively small level anyway. You just have to be observant at times and a good shooter. The ammo can be pretty tight at times I guess. You'd probably just IDDQD, IDKFA it to the end won't you. Tsk tsk.

Man... I was really enjoying the wad, the concept, the atmosphere, the music and the exploration were growing on me BUT... At one point in my casual playthrought I couldn't continue cuz i was stuck, I investigated for several minutes and couldn't advance, I thought that "I must have skipped an easy to see switch", I looked at the only demo of the wad in DSDA to advance (UV-Max demo from Creaphis), I wasn't prepared to see what I saw, the most cryptic switch I've seen in any doom level by FAR, that's what made me rate this wad with only one star, I would pay to see the poker face I had when I saw what I had to do. I'm a big fan of b.p.r.d's work but that was so fuckin bullshit. It doesn't help that the level in software mode runs like fucking shit (it runs worse than fuckin nuts wad, lmfao), I've had to set the fps to the original framerate (35) to get a consistent frame rate, I've never done this in my life. I bet millions of euros that no person can find that switch in software mode with gamma correction set to off.... There is an "alternative" version of this wad that fixes the FPS issue and puts that same switch in a more visible place, I highly recommend you to play that version instead.

Although the progression is so absurdly dense that you'd have to be some type of maniac to beat the whole thing without checking in an editor, the atmosphere produced by this alternate reality is so unique and powerful that by the end you'll forget that you were supposed to merely be playing Doom. It takes a great and powerful mind to create a map like this, for better and/or worse.

Grove is an interesting concept filled with amazing and creative ideas but Jesus H Baltimore Christ there is enough sprites to absolutely nuke most PCs and this makes the game unplayable for most, only play this if you have an absolute monster of a rig.

Playing Grove is getting lost in the world. It always induces a specific mental state in me when I play it.... The sky, the midi, the forest.... it's all alien, drowsy, slightly off-kilter, like a quiet dream.

crazy map, glad he gave a unique spin on the computer map. took me awhile to find the SSG and to get around. not much in the way of combat, I hated the surprise archie and baron. also at one point I had to traverse trees which was fucking awful. the control tower and the key pedestals were interesting.

I personally didn't enjoy playing it. The music also really bummed me out for some reason.

It's very ambiant... very original, artistic at the limit. I like creative maps. However, he oversized number of tree break considerably the gameplay... Some well placed transparent texture should have done the same effect and would increased the framerate. Good Job anyway. 4/5 -- GodCells

Neat map, and plays quite well on a limit removing port on my end. Only thing is, as someone said before, is make the switches more obvious. I honestly wouldn't have found out about the first switch unless someone put it in the comments. --Kagemaru

I played this with IDKFA and ran out of ammo. It´s unplayable even with IDDQD because you will definitely get stuck. IDCLIP should do the trick, I didn´t tried yet. Still has best ambience and originality ever.

This map has a great look and atmosphere going for it, but not much gameplay IMO, to be honest. Still 3 stars required for the good aspects though.

Kind of a repeat of what's been said before. Absolutely stunning atmosphere and a great automap, with some really unique, bizarre scenery. Unfortunately, the map suffers badly in the gaemplay department. B.P.R.D was always one of the most imaginative editors in Doom's history, and this is a testament to that. 3.5/5 for being memorable. -Snakes

This is clearly the worst detailed level ever created for Doom. This is another example of author's selfishness where he puts more work into the detail, yet the gameplay is pretty much zero. Map is also laggy as hell, there are many trees which makes wandering around confusing and is very easy to get lost. Use IDDQD and IDBEHOLDL and stare at details for few minutes, then delete wad. I give this 1/5 only because the music and details were good but the gameplay is ass.

This is one of the most disappointing maps out of there. Simply because it is very dark AND laggy! Did I mention there are a lot of trees which makes the navigating near impossible? Nevertheless, this is the least of the problems, the gameplay is so fucking unbalanced that you are going to fight monsters with just your pistol. The only solution is cheating for weapons. I'm sorry sincerely, but this map sucks dick. 1/5 for effort though. -Doomer95

Basically very simple map. Dark. First switch is hidden too well, after 6 minutes searching I lost patience and used an editor to find it. It got ZDoom on my i7-2600K on its knees, due to 4599 placed things (mostly used for decoration only) in an almost open area... Imho the intention of this map is not a creative DooM level, but some sort of jokewad. Without serious gameplay: 1/5 for the efford only, but I cannot take this serious. Not at all. In other words: WOT. Sorry if you don't like my opinion.

Not too bad, very psychedelic. And to the above asshole reviewer, i mean yeah the nuts series was pretty horrible (not concept wise, but lag wise it was). At least this map is playable (laggy, but playable). Not only that it's a new, innovative idea.

For everyone whos had problems with Column Errors or low frame rates with this wad- Search under 'Grove' at the top, and go get Grove-Alternate which is a fixed up version of it. B.P.R.D

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
