GROVE

About This File

GROVE- THE STORY CONTINUES (...from where?)- In your garden, you can sometimes see an angry looking fat dude steal your mushrooms. He's Smugla. Whenever he takes them, he leaps into a deep hole in the floor like a rabbit. You've never catched him. One day you think "Gee- I wonder why he lives in the ground?" So one day, taking your pistol to blow that mushroom stealer to bits, you jump down the hole. "Lets see how he enjoys my mushrooms now!"... Whatever that means. You hit the bottom of the hole, and you see the hole continue horizontally down. So you go down it, and hit a dead end. But then, you look up, and see another hole out "ha HA!" you retort. You climb out the hole, and look around- "Umm... where the hell am I?" You say, as you see the red skied, gold stared, tree covered, 7 frame per second frame rate world of Grove. You get out of the hole, and see Smugla's house infront of you, with HIS mushroom garden, which are really your mushrooms that he stole. You might as well take them. They are yours- even if it would anger him. Where is he anyway?

There is a map in his house, showing his X on it. Hmm. I wonder why he wants to go there? Well, he IS a trans-galactical mushroom stealer - maybe its a huge mushroom grove? or maybe an opportunity to get other mushrooms from other dimensions? Who knows. Do you? You do don't you- don't lie. Tell me- TELL ME!!

END OF STUPID STORY

P.S- Sorry about all those trees. Its a relatively small level anyway. You just have to be observant at times and a good shooter. The ammo can be pretty tight at times I guess. You'd probably just IDDQD, IDKFA it to the end won't you. Tsk tsk.

FUCK THAT!!! Equinox is fuckin better than this shit and that's definetely playable. With nice settings and I liked all the monsters. Really brought the feeling of Doom action again, I mean come on 500 to 600 monsters per level but the one thing that's a pain the ass is the FREAKIN measly amount of ammo. You expect me to get the enemies in the cross-fire a thousand times?!! 4/5 to be fair.

A heap of shit. Sure it's quite atmospheric, but thats only due to the music, darkness and number of trees. But all this is, is a ridiculous switch-quest in pitch black conditions. And the switches are hidden completeley. The first is a book in a bookcase for fucks sake. If you are going to do things like that you have to make it a little more obvious to the player. Most people will harp on about the slow framerate, but this wad has far worse problems than that. 1/5

Weird and wonderful - the automap was especially cute. However, I'd have to go with the crowd that say the map plays badly. 3* -Phobus

This WAD is simply beautiful acoustically and visually. The detail is amazing. Everything looks as painstakingly realistic as possible. The light effects are haunting and beautiful all at once, and the music is simply gorgeous. It's one of my favorite Doom music tracks ever. The gameplay is very unique, in that you wonder throughout a massive forest. But that is the main issue with this game. It's a dark map where you have to find obscurely hidden switches.

A damned awesome idea! but I wish I could have played this through... I really wish the author could have optimized this level more by using one sided walls inside the forests so that you cannot "see" the _entire_ map all at once. I give this a 4/5 for creativity.

Sorry everyone for not doing something about the frame rate. I was going to put a big lookout tower in the center, so you could see the whole world, so thats why the whole level is in one 'room'. but i scraped the tower idea and left the level the way it was. Who knows -maybe in five years time it'll be playable. Plus- come on- its not THAT slow, is it? -B.P.R.D

this could have benefited more if was added a shotgun at start of the level, because there is shells everywhere but not shotguns to be found! all you have is your crappy pistol! and the map is laggy too! as for level design, lots of trees and is hard to avoid monsters, especially the arch vile which there is no cover to hide, let alone kill the bastard. i give 0* because the author didn't even tried to balance the fucking map!!!! -machoman99

^You are right, the alternate version is much better but still unbalanced, I died about 50 times, mostly because of that fucking chaingun guy with it's spider chaingun (was out of ammo). Whatever, good thing is that I found SSG and lots of ammo when I started game, but at end of level I was still out of ammo, I couldn't kill the barons and I had to skip them. Then I reloaded saved game, cheated for ammo and killed them. Balance is of course fucked up, even with lots of health and armor! 2/5 -Doomer95

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
