I feel a bit late to the party discovering the whole custom doom wad scene only just a year or two ago, but I have managed to play through almost all of the most memorable and awarded wads that have been created over the past 2.5 decades by sifting through the Cacowards and highly reviewed wads from the archive. Grove easily takes the cake as my favorite custom doom creation, and possibly my favorite custom creation from any game I've ever played, be it Starcraft: Broodwar custom maps, Fallout mods, or any other content.

How the author managed to create such a sense of spooky ambience and wonder is really quite amazing. From the hand drawn automap, to the fantastic original music, and everything in between including even the quirky story and setting that B.P.R.D. seemed to think was silly; It all contributes to a great experience that every old school gamer should play through, although you might just need to leave your expectations of a typical doom wad at the door.

One downside to the original level was the fps trouble, but the alternate version eliminates the issue entirely while still maintaining the original feel (or by playing on modern hardware/source port). My only real issue with this version is the very difficult to find switch in the cave.

5/5, I love it, even in 2018.

WOW THAT WAS AMAZING! I actually quit because I was too scared! Doom 3 never even scared me, but the atmosphere and not knowing what was coming next freaked me out. 5 STARS!

This is one of those novelty levels, like The Sky May Be, that's technically striking but no fun to play. It's the most atmospheric Doom level I have ever seen, with a moody sky, some attractive new graphics, and bags of darkness. But the few "straight" bits are crude and old-fashioned, and the gameplay revolves around hunting for tiny switches in near-constant darkness, godgarbage. It's more fun to admire with IDCLIP than to play.

A creepy, beautiful, enchanting, haunting masterpiece with one of the best custom tracks I've ever seen in a Doom WAD. The game play was very challenging due to the complicated switch hunt and darkness, but it's innovative. 4.5/5

An original concept in a small map. A bit confuse, especially the switch in the cave, but funny. 4.5/5

This is a perfect example of what makes B.P.R.D such a great mapper. He manages to take a game that many people nowadays consider obsolete and turn it into an atmospheric, action packed, epic adventure. The music, the sprites, and the map itself all work together to create what can only be described as a work of art. Halo 2: Eat your heat out. 5/5 -Craigs

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
