About This File

Okay, in reality there's no story. I had a bunch of textures, and I had a bunch of imp sprites, so I smashed them all together and here's what came out. It's two maps, btw. You don't have to read any more if you don't want (though I doubt most people have even gotten this far).

The Real Story: You are Darknation, secret agent guy for the government of some country nobody gives a shit about (France or Norway or something). Some big government guys who probably wear fancy suits and dark sunglasses (and those thingies in their ears, radios or cell phone dealies or whatever) have just gotten word that a bunch of experiments have gone horribly, horribly wrong in some undisclosed location (never saw that coming, did you?). Your mission, should you chose to accept it (you don't have a choice anyway), is to infiltrate the base and kill the leader imp dudes (you'll know when you beat them because the map will end).

Sadly the only way you could get into the facility was via one of those crates the UAC is famous for. Once you bust out of it you should be good to go. It's time to kill some god damn dirty furries! Oh, I mean imps.

Some imps are insanely hard bullet sponges (ghost imps!). Not enough space in some rooms to dodge imp attacks. Level design is good but convoluted. Couldn't "turn on the power" in that dark room (button wasn't working).

Also the author loves Trent Reznor's dick for some reason.

Heh. Perfect. The imp variations are cool, especially the Tiny ones. Those little "thought bubble" things are hilarious, too. :P Anyway, 5 stars. -Xaser

Would it kill you to give me some ammo? And I hate air ducts too; so much so I got bored running around in them and said screw it.

This is better than I expected. It's a fairly straightforward level with a compendium of different imp types, all of which I have seen before, and an N64 Doom-style set of textures. There are some Heretic monsters as well. It takes place in a space station/industrial base, with grimy metal floors and lots of air ducts. The level is very square and feels much older than something from 2004. Level two is arcade-like, pitting you against groups of imps one after the other.

perhaps the greatest wad made in the history of man. Stunning, this great work encompasses the passion, the sorrow, the triumphs and the tribulations of perhaps the greatest poster doomworld has ever known. 5 stars. - dn

I can't believe I didn't review this yet... Good map... kinda short and confusing in spots, but still good. NEEDS MORE DETAIL... or not... I really can't tell.

In case you're wondering, Terry's "minion" OneTrueCyber made this, so the wad sucks even harder.

the name Painful Evil may not ring a bell for most people who play the most famous wads, but this one-map wad landed as one of the Top 100 WADs and is in fact, rather painful to play through. the overall style of the level would resemble something that would feel right at home in an E4-themed levelset, but the difficulty of the map is more in line with Plutonia, utilizing some claustrophobic battles and a surprising amount of chaingunners. some of the progression could have been better here, most notably with those blue bars being rather misleading when you figure out what to do with the blue key. also there's some backtracking, which is ruined not by the sheer boredom of backtracking in general (you get plenty of enemies to deal with) but rather having to traverse across damaging blood which I don't like at all. the overall feel is quite steady, giving a hard start, but keeping things hard enough all the way to the end, just don't get too surprised by the end cyber.

A cool hellish level with very good visuals and tense atmosphere. It puts pressure on you from the start; unfortunately the challenge peters out a bit towards the end, but it remains fun throughout. The progression can be cryptic at times because of the mystery switches which open doors far away, but it's not a sprawling level and you shouldn't get lost.

A decent tribute map with a good pace and combat constant.  But it started to feel pretty samey after a while, with neverending crates and mostly flat lighting throughout.  And I would appreciate bigger weapons if it's going to be Mancubus -> Mancubus -> Mancubus -> Archvile the entire time.  It takes way too long to kill them with a shotgun and it isn't challenging enough to justify that.  That one crusher spot was also complete bullshit; there's a small pit with corpses to warn you of it, but if you look down from the ledge above to see it, the ceiling will instantly trap you and drain all your health.
