rex loves curvy hallways, and in this remake of E1 you'll find a lot of them. it works well.

A decent wad. One the plus side it is a bit harder than the original using the same items/monsters, which can't hurt. The only things I'd criticise are that it feels less action packed (a bit more cramped and with less connectivity, perhaps) than Romero's episode, that the details sometimes look out of place, and that some lighting effects don't make sense. Professional mapset created by a professional mapper. I might praise map layout, monster placement, puzzles et all, but I'll say it differently: the last two decades I've played a zillion of E1 clones, and this is the very first one that gave me the same excited feeling I've got when I played the original E1 for the first time. I never expected that being possible, but mr. Claussen succeeded. Respect, and 5* because this is about the best one can get. In it's class truly legendary, an absolute must-play.

an o.k. 're-imagining' of E1 - some of the switch chasing is a bit tedious and slows down the game flow - Knee Deep in the Undead (http://www.doomworl d.com/idgames/index. php?file=levels/doom /j-l/kdu.zip) is more fun...even with it's minimalist architecture and smaller maps

Very good! If you are looking for classic E1 style game play than give this a try. You wont be disapointed. Tip: Listen the Kinkiness Doom songs while playing. ;)

worstest e1 remake imo. bizzare architecture, vulgar decorations and too intricate puzzles completely ruined e1 atmosphere. ** /hth

I agree that, after playing so many E1 styled replacements, this seems a lot like "yesterdays news". This wad looks like E1 down to the last texture, and while it manages to really polish the style to perfection, it's hard to be fully engaged while playing such a conservative take on the so many times explored idea. A quallity set made, mostly, for the knee deep pasatists.

I would give this a straight 10 if it was possible. BEST DOOM E1 replacement EVER! I say this even AFTER I played DTWID! VERY well done!!! To everyone who enjoyed playing DOOM when it came out... PLAY this... it feels like a timemachine. Especially if you play it with the original midi music. BTW: I had no problems with the secrets.

A fantastic Episode 1 remake. The levels are lookely based on the originals, in their layouts, but do have plenty of new-looking areas and play differently enough to make them worthwhile. Hey, this could easily be considered a revision of Episode 1 as it looks better, plays better, and is deja vu, but at the same time is different from the original E1 as well. Whoever gave this such a low grade (had 3 stars w/ 2 votes, and one rated it well, per the review) doesn't know what a good wad is. 5 stars!

Very good, and uncomparable to KDiZD IMO, because this is a down and dirty E1 remake. I actually liked KDiZD a lot but I do think it would've benefitted had it not gone so crazy on extras.

This is a decent remake of episode 1, with the look and feel of the original but with twists

Not bad (4/5) but I noticed some flaws in your secret guide, namely the E1M2 secret to find the chainsaw. I didn't find any different texture in that monster alcove. On E1M1, correct me if I'm wrong, but the lift leading to the switch to open the blue armor door is impossible to get to in time without using turbo. Yes, there ARE people out there who play DOOM without turbo. And, you don't HAVE to jam-pack your maps with monsters to make them good, unless dumbass fanboys are your intended target ;)

I think the originals are better, and definately done see how it looks better. It has some nice lighting effects, but thats not enough, when theres misalignments and bad layout galore. On the bright side it has some nice game play and is reminisceint of the original. Im in between a 3 and a 4, but im a nice guy, so a 4 :)

A previous reviewer wrote: "On E1M1, correct me if I'm wrong, but the lift leading to the switch to open the blue armor door is impossible to get to in time without using turbo." Actually, there is no need for cheats. You can reach it with a little bit of time to spare if you use strafe-50 all the way and run very accurately (I needed to use slow-motion to come close). So this is of course much too tight, and was perhaps intended to be coop-only.

A well done E1 remake. Notstaligia fans will love this and others should certainly give it a try.

I think this is a great set, because while the levels are based off the originals, they certainly unfold more than differently enough to be considered new, and the feeling of some deja vu is welcome. It is also harder than the original E1 (although still not that hard). Of course, it also looks much better and takes more time to finish. The only minor complaint is that the levels have less unnessacary to visit areas that E1 did, but that is minor. Hey, this should have been E1 itself! Good job Rex!

A commendable effort on the author's behalf. It was very enjoyable to revisit E1 and the author did a wonderful job capturing the look of each level from the original. I think the original E1 ranks amongst the best set of Doom levels ever made so in comparison this wad is not paced as well, nor does it look as professional. But hey ^^ it was fun and i didn't die once on ultra-violence ;) - 3 stars.

I usually don't like Remixes, but I have to say this one kept me entertained. The game play and detail were pretty consistent through the whole pack. I'm usually not even a fan of E1 style, but for some reason this one kept me going. Pretty fun pack. 4/5.

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
