About This File

This is the sequel to my old megawad "Scythe". Expect better looking and bigger levels. unfortunately, the last 3 levels are missing, because I am so lazy and I haven't been satisfied with my attempts at making map28. I _might_ release the last 3 maps some time in the future, but do not count on it. (Update: the last 3 maps are now completed!)

Up until the green jungle levels this was awesome as shit and really enjoyable. It was difficult but didn't feel uninspired or tedious. Saddly, things change. Latter levels are full of revenants and 'slaughter' gameplay. Tons of revenants, running around in circles and in general just tedious as fuck. Some call this wad legendary. I call it okay, mainly because I think consistency is part of good design with any level set and this certainly isnt consistent.

Powerful gameplay similar to the first, now with great detail and consistent themes!

it should be pretty obvious why Scythe 2 is everything a sequel wad should be: bigger, better, more fun, and more themed. Scythe 2 is the shining example of a multi-themed mapset, showcasing six themes across six "episodes" and the gameplay that is done in each episode increases, perhaps dramatically at times. even the music is perfectly placed in each respective level, with gothic music in the first episode, followed by more atmospheric tunes in later ones.

of course, back then, we were all eager to see MAP28 and beyond, as the early version of this wad ended at MAP27, which Alm eventually got off to releasing, pulling off a fantastic setting of hell dealing with hordes of minions in MAP28, a much more starved map in MAP29, and the culmination of the entire set in MAP30. that's not leaving out many memorable maps like MAP26 and MAP27 as well, the start of the slaughter in MAP23, the annoying secret level in MAP31 and the Warrens'ified Scythe MAP01 in MAP32. you can't deny Scythe 2 its greatness when it comes to its many maps, and there's something fun to be had in each of them.

2/3rds high quality gameplay and 1/3rd stupid revenant spam. Just like the first Scythe it falls apart in the last 10 levels with innovative run around like an idiot spamming the BFG gameplay.

One of the best mapsets ever. Its a shame the last handful of maps degenerates into so much near-unplayable stupidity as the level design, especially in the "jungle hell temple" maps, is both striking and original. Hope you like irritating Revenant trap spam.

I haven't had that much fun for a long time...and I've played a fair amount of wads in my life. Erik knows what he's doing. Enemy placement is fantastic and the atmosphere is unique. The last few maps are a real challenge. 5/5

Great follow-up to the original. Fun combat, great architecture and map flow. Unfortunately, just like in the original Scythe, the later maps take a turn towards a more hardcore slaughter-map style which doesn't sit well with me. (Also, couldn't find the RL on MAP27.) Still, the earlier maps are excellent.

Scythe 2 is just as awesome in 2014 as when it released. Maps are varied but all fun and great to look at, and some really quite unique. Scythe 2 has probably been my #1 source of mapping inspiration since it came out and likely will continue to be. Scythe 2 has it all, legendary indeed. 5/5

Thanks for finally finishing this, I remember being confused back in the day when map 27 just ended and there was nothing afterward, no climax or conclusion. 4/5. -wavelength

Mediocre gameplay, not half as cool as the first Scythe. But I guess that's the price you have to pay for putting all that pointless detail into maps?

Enjoyed playing the new levels. It surprised me to note that map25 still cannot be exited. ( unless using a port that supports crouch ) Sector 1749 only has a height of 48 !

I don't see how you can call any of the maps here 'ugly'. Erik is one of the most skilled mappers in making beautiful architecture, without having to add pointlessly silly overdetailing to cover up otherwise bland design. This can't get anything but 5/5

Perfect. Gameplay is consistently fun, memorable and challenging. Erik is an excellent mapper, and as mappacks that aren't TCs go, this is my favourite. The cathedral level is just gorgeous. 5/5

2 stars. Not as good as everyone makes it out to be. I prefer the action packed levels of Scythe 1.

If this was the 2001 year I would rate this 5/5. But in 2022 this wad is nothing but a lame retro.   I got the feeling that this wad was trying to showcase the advanced Zdoom capabilities rather than trying to create a good game play, and even with the advanced features the design still feels flat!   HMP or lower players will probably enjoy this as it is a below average difficulty with plenty of ammo/items.   I wanted to rate this 2.5/5 stars, but since half star cannot be selected I rated it 3 stars. We really need to be able to select half a star in rating.

I love SkillSaw's work and this is a magnificent wad, but I am writing this review to mark it for folks like me, who would love the level design, but wouldn't connect with the gameplay. Which is fine, no wad is made for every player.   What didn't work for me in this megawad - as far as I checked it out, playing several levels from different packs - was gameplay geared towards maneuverability and making it without strong weapons and much ammo.   To me Doom is a shooter. When faced with a lot of strong enemies, I would like to be able to get them down with a double shotgun or a rocket launcher. These levels are more about running around quickly with a gun, a berserk pack and a shotgun with only a few shells. In he middle of the level you typically get a chaingun.   And that just turns the game into a platformer for me, which is fine, just not my kind of gameplay.   The design and music are top notch. Even the menu is eye candy. I wanted to adore this project, but I just cannot connect with it.   I will, however, keep it on my hard drive and return to it from time to time. Will update this review if I ever get it.

A small and frantic map for deathmatch that unluckily doesn't got me too much into it. Single player placement is a joke. The only interesting thing i can think are: Why a Batman Forever map, over the fact that shares the music with a Dwango compilation (maybe Dwango 5) by U2, used as well in other doom maps of the time? That's the only piece of correlations between these two franchises i can think of, actually. The second thing that i was thinking is: you known that exist another deathmatch map based upon batman years before the more well known Batman total conversion by ACE Team? Isn't this crazy?
