About This File

An large tech style base with an high ammount of detail, it uses several Zdoom features. Overall an pretty good looking map, much time went into detailing all the areas. First serious attempt in making an non-linear map, im pretty pleased with the results I got. The map has skill levels so it should be playable for all types of skilled players. NOT designed for jumping sorry, you can grab the BFG9000 by jumping for instance. There are probably more things that will screw up gameplay if you jump, thats all and have fun.

A fantastic, single-level wad. Levels that last quite long, or have more than 200 enemies are usually a no-no for me, but Total Control manages to remain interesting throughout, keeping u on your toes with limited ammo (initially) and even less health items, in a map that's full of hitscanners, and plenty of darkness. The atmosphere is top notch and goes hand to hand with the D64 SFX. The detailing is fantastic (tekbase lovers will love what's in store), but isn't the focus. The gameplay is, which is basically some great, survival-style Doom fun.

Plus, great use of limited spaces, that rarely feel unfair, and very good use of enemies that are usually handled in a very bad way (Revs, and Chainguys). Minus one star for the simple reason that it kind of overstays its welcome, and sort of becomes predictable after exploring more than - the quite large - 50% of the map.

Cool visuals and nice atmosphere. There is a lot of room to explore and map itself is quite nonlinear, but without too much switch hunt. Start may be a bit tough, but overall difficulty is relatively easy, not many traps and all of them are predictable. Good work.

This is the bread and butter right here. The atmosphere is ace, the gameplay is brilliant, and the architecture is very good! The level of minute details is just insane that sometimes you can get trapped or caught so be careful! Either way this is just very playable, very pretty DOOM. 5 stars again to the Dutch Devil. -TRRobin.

Here we have an atmospheric high-tech ZDoom ambience again. The map is very detailed with some really nice editing ideas, which are put in the limelight by a lot of coloured lighting mainly. Gameplay, however, is a bit too easy. Most ennemies are former humans, so you're provided with tons of ammo, and health is opulent, too. The fact that I got a BFG and Plasma Gun which I never needed, demands a sequel map with harder villains. 4/5 -Milian

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I love non-linear maps. :D Detail is really nice too, I liked the defense doors you had throughout the level. I wish I could have been able to use them for defense though, as is, most are just window dressing. I also wish there would have been a place where the BFG could have been put to good use; as is, unless you want 100% of everything, there's no need to bother with it at all. Otherwise great level; your best one yet. Keep up the great work Dutch. - Nuxius

A very nice map, though due to non-linear design you need good map knowledge to play it effectively, esp. at the start of the map. Low health and hitscan enemies are the reason. The BFG can be use in a variety of ways, most often for solving fights faster but I agree that it isn't a crucial item. I liked the previous maps more, but this is still a solid 4/5 - Belial

Great looking map but with too many monsters and too predictable battles to make much sense... It hasn´t a bad gameplay when you get to know the layout but it´s far too long to encourage players to go on without saving and some battles are just mindless... Still, you will enjoy it if you like to hold your "fire" key :). 3 stars.

A very very good map. Non-linear, so you have to find you way around, but puts you into challenging battles and also has some clever secrets. I actually didn't use the BFG once, so I can't say you need it for this map. Detail is superb 4.5/5

Just finished on UV first attempt. When I got to the exit I thought it was a bit weird there was about 100 monsters left so had to go back and find them. Got all but one secret and one monster (the one at the exit). Excellent job. 5 from me.

Deserves a 5, but not a fan of the "where do I go? Hey look a chaingunner, damn there goes my health. Now where do I go again?" style. -epyolol

Pretty nice looking map, but very boring to play. The fights were nothing special at any point and the keys were used in a pretty unoriginal way too. They didn't open new parts of the map. They opened closets at the corners of the map with new keys. 3 stars. The architecture and detailing saved a little.

A lot of effort was put into this map, but what a waste. It's full of boring and useless detailing, it's too dark (and the colored lighting made my eyes bleed), and the enemies are placed all over the level in a boring and uniform manner. I couldn't make myself finish this map even with cheats on. There simply wasn't anything interesting here. I'm tempted to give it 1 star to balance all the positive reviews, but I think it deserves two.

"...but I think it deserves two." Wow that's nice of you! Awesome map, I absoultely loved it. I really didn't find the fights boring as some others did, and the detail was awesome. I still play it every once and a while and hope to get some good inspiration from it. -Tango

Very difficult at first, but gets easier as you collect more firepower. Insane detail. Don't forget to save, cause it's gigantic. Definately worth playing. Better than Devil's other maps that used custom monsters and were just way too hard.

According to the author, this was just an ftp upload test, because he didn't do that before. This wasn't meant to be a serious wad in a first place, so why everyone's expectations are too high? (But I won't give it 5 stars, because it would be unfair compared to other wads.)   I bet everyone who complained about the slowness played in GZDoom or other bad alternatives. Runs perfectly fine in PrBoom+ (but that's probably too much for certain people to download and set up properly).

Definitely worthy of the name Plutonia.

While it has its flaws, some rooted in its concept, Knee-Deep in ZDoom is an interesting reimagining of the first episode of Doom. As you progress through the levels, you'll see familiar layouts, but there's new areas added and twists to those classic rooms so that the experience does remain fresh—the familiarity will of course help to find secrets and the like, though not every secret has been recreated.   The expansion of the levels is arguably KDiZD's greatest strength and weakness, as while these highly-detailed environments are interesting, they can also become extremely labyrinthine and confusing to explore. The third level is the best example of this, adding on an entirely-original mines area which itself requires finding keys and switches to progress through this segment. I ended up getting lost and missing a switch, figuring the needed key was in the "original" areas of the map, only to proceed through the level and get blocked by the final door because I hadn't reactivated the generator. The game does give the occasional message prompt, but some parts could have benefitted from giving more direction from the outset.   There's some new monsters. Some don't quite feel Doom-y, like the satyrs (basically melee-only barons) and there's a few too many imp variants, but they do give some more variety to monster encounters. The WAD also adds the super shotgun, as well as two original new weapons to replace the plasma gun and BFG 9000 (amusingly, the game still displayed cell count—GZDoom glitch, maybe?). The grenade launcher serves as a bouncy rocket launcher, doing more damage while being trickier to use, though its greatest trick is its tendency for the grenade to bounce off of tiny details on the floor and blow you to kingdom come instead. The other new weapon is...A Rifle. Just...A Rifle. It fires quite rapidly, is perfectly accurate, and you get a decent amount of ammo for it. And each shot does as much damage as a super-shotgun blast. It is ludicrously overpowered—it can take out tough enemies in just a handful of shots from a long distance, in mere seconds. Even the final bosses, a pair of "bruiser" demons and a giant demon in a pit of lava, go down like chumps provided that you come into these fights with a good amount of ammo for A Rifle.   One thing that does deserve special mention for frustration, though. The game provides an "action indicator" option, to show things in the environment you can use that aren't obvious switches, stuff like consoles and the like. But Z1M3 has a particularly frustrating instance of this, where in order to reach a secret area, you have to interact with a small box sitting on a ledge, which causes the Doomguy to pick up this box so you can then place it on another ledge to jump up into the hatch. Nothing gives any indication that the box in question can be interacted with, and to make it even worse, this secret area is required in order to access the secret level (which is all-important because it gets you A Rifle that much earlier!).   In the end, Knee-Deep in ZDoom has its tedious and frustrating moments, but ultimately it was a fun experience that played to and upon the classic and iconic designs of Knee-Deep in the Dead. And it has made me want a mod that replaces the BFG 9000 with A Rifle for any other WAD, because who needs a big fleeping gun when you can eviscerate the hordes of hell with your almighty A Rifle?

I don't know what the hell was that WAD but I'm gonna be honest, that was an interesting experience. Surprisingly, even as a joke WAD there's some legit maps and they're not even bad at all. I didn't even know community joke WAD exist, I better be on the look out for any open community WAD of this type because I want to participate in one some day.   4/5 stars. if you want to play good shit, this is your WAD.
