About This File

The idea is to keep running and try to make it to the end without dying. The DOOM equivalent of an arcade game, perhaps, and is deliberately tough. Saving is NOT allowed.

Pagan's Run is a lengthy "Run From It"-style map. "It" isn't the silent curse of that infamous Scythe map, however, but rather lethal threats located in the map itself. Caged cyberdemons pump rockets into your butt, and pesky fodder loiters in your path, which once in a blue moon is flattened by a crusher or narrowed into a Chasm-like sliver. Most of the tests over the 2.5-minute trial are fundamentally similar, testing consistency through repetition, but they evolve and morph into different forms: At first you're shooing zombies with shotgun blasts, soon you're navigating barrel clusters with spiders trying to show you love, by the end you're cleaving through greeting mobs with plasma, cybies looking on.

At best, I found Pagan's Run exciting and inventive, and I love movement test maps. But implementation flaws were too common -- potential linedef skips, floors with a fluky chance of not rising if blocked by a monster, and a late unguided drop seemingly designed for freelook. The latter hurts FDA value even on lower difficulties. On UV early, hitscan RNG was disproportionately impactful even with perfect shots. HNTR and HMP seem better.

Twatish. This level is designed to irritate the player and is worthy of having a coconut placed up the author's arse. It's the kind of level that sychophants and servile toadies think is 'great' without realising that they are not enjoying themselves at all. See it for what it is - a load of nonsense.

"Saving is NOT allowed". Wrong! It's much more fun when you set a few checkpoints, at the lifts for example. Getting stuck at the same demon for the fifth time in a row gets dull. 3/5 for the idea.

Haha so cool. I loved it! You should make a sequel :) I only managed to do it on the 2nd easiest difficulty but I'll definitely give the harder difficulties a few more tries. The hardest part to me was the lift with the line of barrels on it. Classic idea. 5/5

There is an unfair part where you have to jump down but you can easily miss without mouselook and overall it's quite random, but if you're lucky it will be fun. Cool music and title, annoying new palette effect.

Don't kill the zombiemen if you can help it, better they get killed than you. Innovative and fun. 4/5

I don't think any part is unfair really. The use of difficulty settings is a plus too. This is really an original map (I'm not even going to comment on architecture because obviously that is so not the point here) and it reminds me of levels such as Map28 of Scythe except in this case you're always aware of where the threat is coming from and I arguably prefer that over random death from a voodoo effect you can only time the onset of but can't see. I wish there were more maps like this!

now this is amazing guys, if you check out the map with doom builder you can see how complicated it is, and the detail is fine too. Of course great gameplay too. 5\5

Fun, challenging set of maps that looks much better than you might expect for the time it was made. These maps will still slap you around a bit on HMP if you're not staying sharp. The author is fond of Chaingunner ambushes which keep you on your toes. I didn't find the SSG until around MAP05, which was cool, I like when its not given out too early. Pistol-starting the last two maps is pretty tough, but doable.   The map designs do a really good job of letting the player see crucial areas from different angles through progression and the layouts are really tidy overall, and feel a bit more modern than a lot of other 94/95 maps I've played. There are some really nice large-scale vistas (like the start of MAP06), nice uses of verticality and a good mixture of tight and more open combat.   Recommended!

Spectacular visuals and engaging combat make this an absolute must play. There's a puzzle with a "Shoot the thing" answer that kind of comes out of left field and can be an easy place to get stuck if you're not on your toes, but that hardly stops the map from being a thrilling masterpiece.

E3M9's refrain of back-tracking to a church for keys is a little tedious, and there are a few moments where things can become a frustrating key/switch hunt as you figure out what to do next, but aside from that, this an intense and rewarding adventure with beautiful lighting and architecture.
