About This File

It is an old Beta version of Microsoft's Doom port. It's made for DOOM II v1.8 (though the latest IWADs will work as well), but will also run DOOM. One convenient feature it provides is that if when executed it doesn't find an IWAD it'll let you browse for one (so you don't have to necessarily run it from the Doom2 directory.)

It's a very good port for being released before Doom 95... but the Music is delayed, the sound efects are in bad quality and the loading screens are hell! I'm curious how it would be to play NETDOOM.exe though.

Great for its own

I'm stunned that this runs as well as it does on a 64bit Windows 8 machine.. the sound effects are slightly delayed though and it crashes looking for HELP2 if you let it sit long enough, but it seems to be free of a TON of bugs which plagued Doom95.. I'm not even sure the two are related, looking at this..

I believe I used to have this in the old days. It's not really interesting, though.

^ It's very interesting! This seems like it was shaping up to be a very good port, there are only a few small bugs/oversights, yet it got shelved in favor of Doom 95...which has much worse bugs than anything in this. Amazingly, this still runs on Win7 x64 without any significant problems other than a lack of music and a palette issue on the text/end screens.

These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.

A really frantic and fun DM map with pretty neat stuff like invisible pillar in the middle of the arena, doesn't have anything to do with the title but the level can become a BFG spamming fest soon, especially with bots. Less fun in SP but the arch-ville+bunch of nazi combo is a nice feat.

Only six enemies (played on UV) and no working exit. Other than that, it is a pretty detailed map for 1995. I enjoyed the general design and the poisonous vats of acid. Very cool, but not practical for good gameplay.   EDIT: Just discovered this is a ideally a DM wad… haha, for that purpose, it seems good. My original rating was 2/5, will change it now.

Lots of traps and monster closets. Some switches are activated by shooting but there's nothing to really tell you about this because they look the same as other switches.   Texturing is good and enemy placement proved rather difficult at times. There aren't may health pickups on UV so it was a fight to get through.

It's pretty good for 1994. If you don't mind having no health items at all (except in a few maps) and the outrageous amounts of cyberdemons per map, you should give it a try. It's pretty challenging and I like it. E2M3 is a bit 'eh...' though.
